BSU recognized for excellence and global competitiveness at CHED-CAR’s Gawad Parangal during Flair Masterclass 2025

The second day of the Filipino Leaders in Advancing International Reputation (FLAIR) Masterclass: Upscaling Programs and Projects, Leveraging Internationalization and Futures Thinking (UPLIFT 2025) concluded on October 1, 2025, at Saint Louis University, Baguio City.

The Day 2 program centered on Strategic Positioning and Institutional Showcases, with sessions that focused on building a stronger foundation for internationalization, making impact visible, and sharing testimonials from HEIs that earned global rankings, highlighting their journeys, strategies, and practical tips.

One of the Major Highlights of the day was the ā€œGawad Parangal sa Pandaigdigang Kahusayan,ā€ an awarding ceremony that honored higher education institutions in the Cordillera for their achievements in the World University Rankings.

Benguet State University was honored with a commendation for its international recognition for securing a place in the World University Ranking for Innovation (WURI) and in the 801ā€“1000 bracket of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. This honor affirms BSUā€™s unwavering commitment to global competitiveness, bringing pride not only to the university but also to the Cordillera region.

These awards were made possible through BSUā€™s key programs and projects. The universityā€™s rank in the Entrepreneurial Spirit category was thanks to the Bee Education Services (BeEs1) and Bee Entrepreneurship Services (BeEs2) of the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (Bsu Crac). Its recognition in the Funding for Sustainability category came from the 2023 sustainable income-generating entrepreneurial projects of the University Business Affairs Office (Bsu Uba). For the Infrastructure/Technology category, BSUā€™s high rank was due to its Landslide Susceptibility Analysis, Monitoring, Mapping, and Early Warning Systems, a research program in the Center for Geoinformatics – Benguet State University that assists communities in the Cordillera.

Faculty and Staff from the BSU, led by Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbress, the Vice President for Research and Extension and Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, Director for International Relations Office, proudly received the award that recognized the universityā€™s excellence and global competitiveness.

The two-day FLAIR Masterclass provided an opportunity to honor the achievements of higher education institutions and to strengthen camaraderie among leaders. The event will further contribute to advancing the regionā€™s collective efforts in promoting internationalization and celebrating global excellence.

March 28, 2026Benguet State University (BSU), through its International Relations Office (IRO), hosted a meeting and seminar with Maharasarakham University (MSU) of Thailand on March 28, 2026, held at the IRO function hall in the morning and at the Everlasting Hall of the Research and Extension Building in the afternoon.

The meeting featured Dr. Orawan Srisompun, Head of International Affairs under the Division of Agriculture of Maharasarakham University, accompanied by Ms. Tissanamadee Srisompun. They were joined by Dr. Doreen Allasiw, IRO Deputy Director; Dr. Jhordan Cuilan, International Language Center (ILC) Director; Dr. Pelin Belino, College of Home Economics and Technology (CHET) Advanced Studies (ADS) Coordinator; Maā€™am Jacqueline Gawisan, CHET IRO Coordinator; Sir Jake Galian, CA IRO Coordinator. Also in attendance were Maā€™am Dafhney Joy Ligligan and Maā€™am Judylyn Obal, who will be undertaking their internships at the Faculty of Public Health and the Faculty of Technology at MSU, respectively.

During the meeting, Dr. Srisompun introduced Mahasarakham Universityā€™s institutional profile and its academic programs. In turn, Dr. Allasiw and Dr. Cuilan introduced Benguet State Universityā€™s profile, including the programs offered by the ILC. Both parties agreed on the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

In the afternoon, a seminar hosted by the Office of Extension Services entitled ā€œFarmer Organizations and Market Integration: The Case of Rice and Vegetable Supply Chains in Thailandā€ took place online and onsite at the Research and Extension Office’s everlasting hall, with the participation of graduate and undergraduate students, educators, researchers, and members of farmers’ groups.

Dr. Srisompun discussed her field of expertise in agriculture, providing valuable insights into rural agricultural practices, challenges in both conventional and modern supply chains, key constraints faced by individual farmers, the various types of farmer organizations in Thailand, and the benefits of market integration mechanisms. She also highlighted case studies of rice production in Thailand, including ā€˜Punboon Organic,ā€™ a community-based organic rice enterprise that promotes sustainable agriculture and value-added rice products, and ā€˜Ba Nong Hin,ā€™ a village-level rice farming community, which illustrates grassroots agricultural development. These initiatives emerged from the efforts of the national government to encourage smallholder farmers to shift from conventional farming to organic farming practices and promote sustainable agriculture.

Moreover, she also introduced the ā€˜Khao Im Solution,ā€™ an end-to-end, community-based approach that is applied in rice farming. This emphasizes food security, sustainable production, and value chain development. This model is often illustrated by case studies like the Punboon Organic and Ban Nong Hin, which demonstrate the integration of sustainability and market-oriented strategies in rice production.

Following the discussion, an open forum was held, allowing the participants to seek clarifications on the topics presented and engage in further discourses about the point raised.

During her visit, Dr. Srisompun toured the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC), guided by Mr. Lovenel Cagadoc, Beekeeping Volunteer, and Mr. Tristan Apiles, Farm Technician, where she was introduced to the various beekeeping and farming management techniques, honeybee by-products, and the different pollen alternatives. She also visited the Strawberry Farms, facilitated by Mr. Leonard D. Licudan, Project Technical Assistant at the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/ Innovation Center (ATBI/IC), where she learned about the different strawberry varieties, planting methods, and sustainable cultivation practices in growing strawberries.//J. March 26, 2026Benguet State University, through the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center, hosted a two-day knowledge sharing, seminar, and partnership meeting on March 25ā€“26, 2026.

The event focused on Knowledge-Sharing on Agribased Technology Business Incubation, Strawberry cum High-Value Vegetable Production, Seminar on Local Branding Strategy in Japan, and a collaboration meeting. Held at the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center (ATBI/IC), the event brought together students, farmers, educators, researchers, international visitors, and institutional representatives for a series of knowledge-sharing sessions, field exposure activities, and strategic discussions.

On the first day, the knowledge sharing activity started with a welcome remark from Dr. Richard Dumapis, RAISE Project Staff, and Dr. Ruth Diego, ATBI/IC Director, who provided an overview of the farming incubation program, discussing the history, success, and challenges faced by ATBI/IC. Meanwhile, Dr. Darwin Basquial, project staff at ATBI/IC, and Mr. Fredie Ayawan, founder of FMA Agritech Integrated Farm, delved into the Practical Aspect of Strawberry Cum High Value Crops Production. In the afternoon, Mr. Fredie Ayawan, Mr. Baltazar Tuyadan Jr., and Maā€™am Jocelyn Baniaga, incubatees of ATBI/IC, accompanied the guests for a visit to the strawberry farm.

The second day of the seminar commenced with an opening prayer led by ATBI/IC intern, Ms. Diane Daplian, followed by the opening remarks from Dr. Roscinto Ian Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension, stating that agriculture is the backbone of our nation. The event featured Dr. Kurita Hideyuki, an Associate Professor at Ehime University under the International Relations Africa Engagement Promotion Office.

Dr. Kurita briefly discussed the Mandarin Orange varieties in Ehime, the Mandarin Calendar, and the logistics of Mandarin Orange before delving deeper into the Branding Strategy in Food Value Chain and Role of Local Government in Rural Japan, Ehime. During his discussion, he expounded on the different strategies of mandarin orange farmers, the cultivation practices, the branding of mandarin oranges and other products made out of mandarin oranges, and the multiple market channels used by farmers. He also underscored the critical role of the local government which helps enhance and improve the farmersā€™ strategies in product distribution, and helps promote local development that benefits the public. Additionally, collaborations with private companies expand the market sales activity through initiatives and negotiations. He then highlights that branding quality, with the use of mascots or images, powers the impact of how consumers perceive the product.

The morning session concluded with an open forum followed by the awarding of certificates to Dr. Kurita Hideyuki and Dr. Darwin Basquial, together with Dr. Ruth Diego, ATBI/IC Director; Dr. Lesley Dale Umayat, Food Science Research Innovation Center (FSRIC) Director; Dr. Ana Mendoza, Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) Director; and Maā€™am Matyline Camfili-Talastas, Research and Extension IRO Coordinator.

The afternoon session features the partnership collaboration meeting, attended by directors, representatives, and project staff from different offices. The meeting began with an overview of the partnership between different universities in Japan by Dr. Rex John Bawang, International Relations Office (IRO) Director. Throughout the session, Dr. Kurita shares positive thoughts and suggestions towards a fruitful collaboration and partnership with BSU towards rural development, including, among other things, the possibility of exchange programs for research and academic programs. //J. March 23, 2026Delegates from Tottori University paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the President on March 23, 2026, as part of their field study exploration in Benguetā€™s farming communities, accompanied by Maā€™am Matyline Talastas, Research and Extension IRO Coordinator, and Maā€™am Cheryll Launio, Director of the Office of Extension Services.

Benguet State University President, Dr. Kenneth Laruan, and International Relations Office Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, extended a warm welcome to the visiting delegation of Tottori University, including a professor, alongside undergraduate Agricultural Economics students and a BSU alumna, Ms. Mary-an Altaki, who is currently pursuing her graduate studies in Agricultural Economics at Tottori University.

Following their courtesy visit, the delegation toured around the campus, including select agricultural centers and institutes. During their tour, the delegation visited the University Marketing Center, where BSU products are available. They also explored the University Library, where Ms. Pretty Garuela, one of the Library Aides, guided them, and the University Museum, where C. Unos and R. Wayan, BSIT interns, shared a brief history of the University.

At the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), they were guided by Mr. Cirilo Del Rosario, Science Research Assistant, who introduced the different stages of Arabica coffee processing and demonstrated the various machineries, tools, and equipment used. The visit concluded with a courtesy call at the office of the IHFSA Director, Mr. Christopher Deponio, where the delegation engaged in a meaningful discussion on the current state of the coffee industry.

The delegation then proceeded to the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center (ATBI/IC), where Project Technical Assistant V Mr. Leonard Licudan led a tour of the facility, highlighting food processing methods, packaging techniques, and equipment. This was followed by a visit to the Food Science Research and Innovation Center (FSRIC), where Mr. Caster Troy Iblogan facilitated the tour and discussed food product development, extension services, and processing technologies. During the visit, the delegation also met the FSRIC Director, Mr. Lesley Dale Umayat.

March 23, 2026Benguet State University (BSU), through the Cordillera Center for Animal Research and Development (CCARD) and the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC), formalized its partnership with Catalyste+ Canada through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the Office of the President on March 23, 2026.

Catalyste+ is a Canadian economic development organization that provides mentorship and advisory services to strengthen local skills and organizational capacity across countries and Indigenous communities in Canada. It collaborates with governments, community organizations, and businesses to enhance knowledge and drive innovative solutions for sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and operates spanning over 30 countries.

The ceremonial signing was held in the presence of University President Kenneth A. Laruan; CCARD and CRAC Director Ana B. Mendoza; Research and Extension Vice President Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres; International Relations Office Director Rex John G. Bawang; Academic Affairs Vice President Janet P. Pablo; CRAC and CCARD staff; Ms. Jae Imai from Catalyste+ Canada; Ms. Ton Nu Thi Thanh Yen from Catalyste+ Vietnam; and representatives from Catalyste+ Philippinesā€“ Mr. Erwin L. March 20, 2026As part of the Guam delegatesā€™ visit to the municipality, Benguet State University, in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of La Trinidad, hosted a cultural exchange program on March 20, 2026, at the University Canteen, College of Home Economics and Technology Building.

The program was graced by Benguet State University officials, including the University President and Vice Presidents, as well as representatives from the Local Government Unit of La Trinidad, representatives and officials from Guam, BSU faculty and staff, student interns, and the Kontad Cultural Group.

The exchange was carried out through a series of interactive activities, including delegate introductions, messages of support, and cultural performances. The BSU-KONTAD showcased traditional Cordilleran dances such as Pinanyowan, Ballangbang, and Boogie from Mountain Province, Tinaktakyad, Tayao, and Bendiyan from the province of Benguet. Meanwhile, the Guam delegation presented the ā€˜Tuletiā€™, which includes chants, dances, and rituals that honor ancestral traditions and highlight the deep connection of the Chamorro people to the sea. These presentations fostered mutual appreciation and a deeper understanding of each culture. The program concluded with expressions of gratitude and the exchange of cultural tokens, symbolizing unity and shared heritage.

The Guam delegation presented ā€˜katupat,ā€™ a handcrafted item made from coconut leaves, representing the latte stone, which is found in their island and the foundation of ancient times, while both parties expressed their commitment to sustaining long-term partnerships through future exchanges, research collaborations, and cultural engagements.

The event is part of BSUā€™s ongoing commitment to internationalization and partnership-building, aiming to strengthen cultural understanding and academic collaboration. It also featured shared indigenous heritage, values, and traditions among participating communities. March 16, 2026From the University of Queensland, Dr. Anthony Halog, a visiting scientist and professor, shared his expertise on Circular Economy and provided mentorship on project proposals to faculty members and staff of Benguet State University at the Everlasting Hall of the Research and Extension Building on March 13, 2026.

Dr. Anthony Halog, a distinguished expert in sustainability science, industrial ecology, and circular economy, has contributed to the Philippines through the Department of Science and Technologyā€™s (DOST) Balik Scientist Program. He also collaborated with Caraga State University to strengthen research on responsible production and consumption, particularly in reducing environmental impacts. In recognition of his contribution to the countryā€™s mining strategies in 2025, he was commended as a Balik Scientist.

To start the day, Dr. Halog was warmly welcomed by the University President, Dr. Kenneth Laruan, Dr. Janet Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Engr. Marvin Valentin, Special Assistant to the OVPAA. During the meeting, they discussed the current status of agriculture and engineering programs at BSU.

As an Environmental Science professor, Dr. Halog shared his knowledge on circular economy, which replaces the traditional linear economy by changing how products are designed, utilized, and disposed ofā€“ from the ā€œtakeā†’useā†’throw awayā€ model to keeping materials in use for as long as possible (reduce, reuse, recycle approach) during the Public Lecture and Proposal Workshop oganized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, and the Office of Research Services.

He also discussed bioeconomy, which refers to the use of renewable biological resources to produce products, and he also highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps improve highland farming in a seminar. He encourages engineers to design out waste and pollution, maintain materials and products in use, and regenerate natural systems. Additionally, he provided guidance on selecting appropriate funding agencies for participants who plan to propose research studies and seek financial support.

Meanwhile, eight research study titles were proposed during the workshop session in the afternoon, with Dr. Halog, Dr. Janet Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Sir Roscinto Ian Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension, who served as panel members.

The seminar-workshop concluded with insights and mentorship from Dr. Halog and the sharing of takeaways by the participants. Moreover, Dr. Halog, with the assistance of Engr. March 14, 2026Strengthening ties in physical education, Benguet State University (BSU), through the College of Human Kinetics (CHK), formalized a partnership with YMCA College of Physical Education in India, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Office of the University President on March 14, 2026.

Kenneth Laruan, University President, along with Sir Marlon Tabdi, Dean of the College of Human Kinetics (CHK), and faculty members from CHK, warmly welcomed Sir Johnson Premkumar, Principal-in-Charge and staff representative of YMCA College of Physical Education. Further exchanges of information were made through presentations and discussions.

Dr. Laruan and the faculty members of the College of Human Kinetics at BSU discussed the programs offered by the college, as well as the potential plans for future collaborations. Meanwhile, Sir Premkumar introduced YMCA College of Physical Education, providing a background of the institution, which was established in 1920 by Harry Crowe Buck, a renowned pioneer in physical education training in India. He also presented the collegeā€™s infrastructure, facilities, and equipment, along with other information about its faculty and staff, and the number of students currently enrolled in the institution.

The discussion concluded with plans to propose exchange programs between the two institutions. This partnership reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing physical education, promoting health and wellness, and strengthening international academic cooperation in support of the #SDG3, #SDG4QualityEducation, and #SDG17partnershipsforthegoals.

The guests were accompanied by International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang, along with other IRO staff members, as they paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the University President, where they were received by Dr. Josel M. Florentin, Vice President for Business Affairs, and Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension. The meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen institutional connections and explore potential areas of cooperation between BSU and TÄ°KA.

Following the courtesy visit, the group proceeded to the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where Mr. Vecker Tero, IHFSA Farm Supervisor, together with Ms. Loida A. Sadey, Science Research Assistant, guided the visitors around the facility. During the tour, the team shared insights on the different coffee drying methods, processing techniques, roasting practices, operational requirements, and the equipment currently used by the Institute. March 7, 2026Sharing of experiences and insights emphasizing the value of cross-cultural perspectives marked the final leg of the Tottori University delegatesā€™ Immersion Program with Benguet State University (BSU).

The delegates reflected on how their perspectives on the province and the country had evolved, comparing their initial impressions with the discoveries they made during the immersion program. They also expressed their appreciation of the activities undertaken, highlighting learning experiences that went far beyond the classroom. Ultimately, the students expressed deeper appreciation for learning English, noting that this is not only a subject in school but a vital tool for communication.

The closing activity commenced with a heartfelt message from the IRO Director, Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, congratulating the delegates for completing their immersion. Alongside the ILC Director, Dr. Jhordan T. Cuilan, Dr. Bawang awarded the certificates recognizing the studentsā€™ achievements and the invaluable role of Tottori University staff members, Sir Kaoru Hayata and Maā€™am Shanika Ito, in assisting in the conduct of the program.

Sir Hayata and Maā€™am Ito also delivered messages of appreciation, noting how the immersion program allowed their students to blossom, showing visible transformations in their individual growth and a profound sense of confidence. Dr. Cuilan concluded with words of gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the Socio-cultural Immersion Program, which is now in its second year as an ILC Flagship Training Initiative.

On March 7, the delegates explored the Baguio Botanical Garden for their final excursion. Known for its lush greenery and tranquil environment, the site features Friendship Gardens representing countries with cultural ties and sister-city relations with Baguio City, including Japan.

March 5, 2026Delegates from Tottori University explored select sites in Baguio City as part of the socio-cultural immersion program of the BSU- International Language Center (ILC). This aims to provide foreign students with opportunities for academic learning while strengthening their cultural understanding and appreciation of nature and the local community.

Starting the dayā€™s visits, the delegates enjoyed an exciting adventure tour at Uncle Samā€™s Eco Park. This allowed them to appreciate the natural beauty and local artistry of the park which features colorful stone carvings, rock designs, wooden bridges, and nature trails, among others. The group also visited the BenCab Museum where the students explored an impressive collection of contemporary and traditional Filipino art, from wonderful paintings to sculptures. While enjoying the fresh mountain air and scenic views, the visit allowed for appreciation of both nature and Filipino artistry.

In the afternoon, the delegates continued their exploration with a visit to the historic Diplomat Hotel and nearby Mirador Hill, blending culture, heritage, and scenic landscapes. The former Diplomat Hotel, now known as Baguio City Heritage Hill and Nature Park, stands as a silent witness to decades of history . The tour concluded with a reflection on the Mirador Hill Peace Memorial which was established to honor the victims of war and inspire reconciliation and lasting commitment to peace. The delegates also experienced the torii gates and bamboo grove, which created a familiar ā€œLittle Japanā€ atmosphere in the Philippines.

March 4, 2026As one of the highlights of the socio-cultural immersion, Tottori University delegates visited a well-known major wholesale bread manufacturer and a renowned Philippine handweaving company.

Guided by Maā€™am Laarni Bacit, Quality Assurance Manager, the delegates first toured the Valley Bread production facility. The visit allowed the group to observe the end-to-end bread-making process, from flour baking sourcing to final packaging. Students gained insights into modern baking methods, leaving a better appreciation for the craftsmanship behind everyday staples like bread. Interestingly, the tour provided unique learning opportunities, blending technical education with cultural immersion. Valley Bread’s facility truly offers a glimpse into efficient production, inspiring future innovations in the industry.

In the afternoon, the delegates explored Narda’s Handwoven Arts Inc., and Maā€™am Lorraine Gumeyac, weaving-in-charge, led the tour and showed the hand weaving production of Cordilleran textile step by step. The visit highlighted traditional techniques, blending indigenous heritage patterns. Students also had the chance to observe skilled weavers at work, where they create table runners and cloths with cultural patterns, seeing each step of crafting vibrant textiles.

March 3, 2026Tottori University delegates partake in an interactive learning with the BSU-KONTAD aimed at experiencing select traditional dances in the region. The session concluded with a performance showcasing what they had learned while dressed in the traditional Cordilleran attire.

In the afternoon, the delegates engaged in an eco-educational tour at the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) and the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where they learned of the efforts of the university in research, livelihood, and income generation toward environmental sustainability.

Mr. Tristan Apiles, CRAC farm technician, conducted an orientation about the center and the beekeeping processes and procedures. Following this, the delegates had enrichment discussions with Mr. Hemar Batil, science research assistant, and Mr. Hanter Paul Bangitao and Mr. Lovenel Cagadoc, CRAC volunteers. On the other hand, Mr. Vecker Tero, IHFSA farm supervisor, toured the delegates around the vicinity after a short introduction of IHFSA and its purpose. He shared the different drying methods, drying process, the roasting methods of the coffee beans, and the budding process of the citrus trees.

March 3, 2026Benguet State University (BSU) welcomed students from Odisee University College on March 2, 2026, during the flag-raising ceremony at the Administrative Building grounds, followed by a Cultural Welcome at the International Relations Office (IRO) function hall in the afternoon.

Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office (IRO), warmly welcomed and acknowledged the presence of the international visitors during the flag ceremony. He was joined by International Language Center Director Jhordan T. Cuilan, who introduced the delegates from Tottori University, and College of Nursing Dean Mark U. Gay-as, who presented the nursing students from Odisee University College.

After the ceremony, the Odisee students paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the University President, where they were welcomed by Dr. Richard H. Kinnud, the Vice President for Administration and Finance and Officer-in-Charge; Sir Mark U. Gay-as, the Dean of the College of Nursing and IRO Coordinator; Sir Jude L. Tayaben, Associate Dean of the College of Nursing; and Maā€™am Bernadette C. Bagto, from the Office of the University Registrar. The delegates were also briefed on the activities and programs they may participate in during their stay. Afterwhich, they also raised their national flag alongside the Philippine Flag, symbolizing their presence in the University and strengthening the spirit of friendship and international collaboration.

Afterwards, the students toured the College of Nursing (CN) building, facilitated by Maā€™am Mhyrlynejee S. Camdas and Maā€™am Jovy L. Layson, faculty and staff members at the CN, where they were introduced to the various rooms, laboratories, and equipment available for use during their internship in BSU.

A cultural welcome program was held for the students in the afternoon. The program was once again graced by Dr. Kinnud and Dr. Bawang, along with faculty members from the College of Nursing. The program commenced with an opening prayer led by Ms. Stefanie Gum-oyen, IRO intern, followed by welcome remarks by Dr. Doreen Allasiw, the Deputy Director of IRO. Sir Dominador Abad Jr., Department Chairperson of the Clinical Instruction, together with Sir Mark Gay-as, presented an overview of the partnership between BSU and Odisee University and introduced the delegates. Dr. Kinnud then conveyed a heartfelt message about the partnership, which was followed by a gracious expression of gratitude from Ms. Dulcie Anne Marie Shekewa Domene Sinonke, one of the Odisee University students.

Moreover, a demonstration of cultural artistry was performed by the BSU Wildcats Arnis Team, showcasing the rhythmic stick-and-blade techniques of the National Martial Arts of the Philippines, the Arnis. This was followed by the performance of the BSU Lowland Cultural Dance Troupe, Sinagtala, performing the Sarung Banggi and CariƱosa. The cultural showcase was concluded with a line dance led by Maā€™am Charvet Caytap.

March 2, 2026Benguet National High School (BeNHS) buzzed with cross-cultural excitement as Tottori University delegates shared a glimpse of their culture, traditions, and language through interactive presentations and discussions with foreign language learners and faculty.

The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Principal Nestor O. Dalay-on, who greeted the Japanese delegates and set an enthusiastic tone for the activity. Splitting into two groups, the delegates introduced key aspects of Japanese culture among Grades 7 and 9 learners through lively discussions and student-led presentations. These were decorated with curious questions about food, seasons, landmarks, and customs, among others, making the classroom fun and engaging. With the delegates are Maā€™am Grace O. Pelico, Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL) Coordinator; Maā€™am Jelyn Cortez, SPFL Teacher; and Ms. Arisa Minami, Nihongo Partner.

The afternoon sessions among Grades 8 and 10 learners highlight simple demonstrations and songs. The sessions concluded with up-close and personal interactions between the delegates and the foreign language learners, deepening cross-cultural connections.

Earlier this morning, the delegates attended the Universityā€™s Flag Raising Ceremony, gaining insights into one of the institutionā€™s regular traditions and expressions of unity. February 28, 2026Tottori University delegates visited selected sites in Tublay, Benguet, as part of their socio-cultural immersion activities.

Featuring the English vibes and a panoramic view of La Trinidad, Baguio, and Alpha Land, the delegates were welcomed by Maā€™am Juliet Recel Guidangen, owner of Beacon Hill Eco Park. In her orientation, Maā€™am Guidangen highlighted that the park offers locals and Filipinos in general, who do not have the opportunity to visit the UK, a chance to experience a glimpse of it locally.

The group also visited Poligā€™s Farm. This allowed for observation of the surrounding farms and the immediate agricultural environment. The farm featured a rustic mountain getaway featuring giant kettles and mountain views.

In general, the breathtaking scenery provided relaxing settings for the participants to appreciate the natural beauty of the municipality while engaging in light conversations and cultural interaction. The experience highlighted the connection between nature, agriculture, and culture.

February 27, 2026Led by the ILC team, the delegates from Tottori University visited industry-relevant sites in La Trinidad on February 27, 2026.

A meaningful educational discussion took place at the Benguet State University- Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/ Innovation Center (BSU-ATBI/IC), where the Tottori delegates gained insights from farmers engaged primarily in strawberry production. The discussion was led by the ATBI/IC Director, Ruth C. Diego. It focused on the experiences, observations, and practices of the farmers in strawberry farming and vegetable cultivation within the locality and abroad. It was noted that some of the farmers, for a period, worked specifically in Japan.

Following the educational interaction, a tour of the strawberry farm was facilitated. This provided for a concrete image of the technicalities of strawberry production- greenhouse establishment, watering system installation, and mixed cropping, among others. The delegates also participated in the renowned strawberry-picking experience.

In the afternoon, the delegates had the chance to interact with foreign language and purposive communication students. Facilitated faculty members from the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), all the students got to know each other, shared their own culture- the Filipino and Japanese cultures, and practiced basic phrases from both languages.

Earlier in the day, the delegates enjoyed the beautiful panoramic view of the valley, capturing the vegetation of La Trinidad.

February 26, 2026Benguet State University (BSU) warmly welcomed 11 students and 2 staff members from Tottori University, Japan, for a short-term cultural immersion program led by the International Language Center (ILC). The visit aims to immerse the students in the university and connect with the local community.

The day began with a courtesy call to the University President, Dr. Kenneth A. Laruan, underscoring the strong partnership between the institutions. The delegates then engaged in a campus tour, visiting offices of socio-cultural and economic significance.

The group also paid a courtesy visit to the Benguet Governor, Hon. Melchor D. Diclas, who emphasized Benguetā€™s sister-province relationship with Japan, highlighting the long-standing cooperation between the governments. They had the opportunity to explore the Benguet Museum, where the students delved into learning more about Benguetā€™s history, culture, and local governance through the discussion led by Sir Kenneth Kelcho. The museum displays traditional clothing, baskets, tools, and other artifacts that show the brief history of the daily life and traditions of Benguetā€™s indigenous communities.

A cultural program organized by the International Relations Office (IRO) wrapped the dayā€™s sessions. Participated in by the delegates and select university officials, the program opened with a prayer through an ā€œUggayamā€ led by Mr. Mark Joshua Balao-as from the College of Social Sciences and messages of continued partnership by IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang and ILC Director Jhordan T. Cuilan.

In response, Sir Kaoru Hayata, an international office staff member of Tottori University, shared his hopes that the students can break their silence and improve themselves through this socio-cultural immersion program.

February 21, 2026In collaboration with Benguet State University, the Pansigedan Advocacy Cooperative held the inaugural graduation of the Community Leaders Formation Program. by This was also followed by the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Pansigedan Advocacy Cooperative, Benguet State University with the College of Social Sciences and College of Public Administration and Governance, International Relations Office, and the Department of Interior and Local Government-CAR, formalizing their partnership to strengthen leadership development initiatives and advance civic education efforts, at the IRO Function Hall on February 21, 2026.

As a non-governmental organization, PAC initiated the CLFP to foster members from different associations, organizations, and agencies to become future leaders. The CLFP functions to forge a generation of leaders that focuses on civic engagement, and it also strives to provide essential knowledge, practical skills, and ethical values, which are required to advocate for a healthier and sustainable democracy. Furthermore, the program curriculum is embedded in cultural values, which provides a culturally relevant foundation for leadership that prioritizes community well-being.

The program kicked off with a warm welcome from BSU President, Dr. Kenneth A. Laruan, emphasizing that ā€œLeadership is not about position, but it’s all about responsibility, integrity, dedication, and genuine service to the community.ā€

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed by BSU and PAC through: Dr. Kenneth Laruan, BSU President; Dr. Stanley Anongos, Dean of the College of Social Sciences; Dr. Gretchen Gaye Ablaza, former Dean of the College of Public Administration and Governance; Dr. Doreen Allasiw, Deputy Director of IRO; Sir Christian Joseph de Vera, DILG Representative; Maā€™am Betty Listino, Chairperson of PAC; and Maā€™am Rhea Loncio, General Manager of PAC, sharing a promise to continue nurturing future leaders for the community.

31 CLFP graduates were presented, pinned, and awarded their certificates, recognizing their dedication, advocacy for the common good, and for fulfilling their academic engagement with CLFP. Resource persons, volunteer facilitators, and donors/sponsors were also given certificates of recognition to acknowledge their unwavering support. Additionally, a plaque of recognition for their commitment and integrity towards the communityā€™s civic education, was awarded to the different partners of PAC: Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); Local Government Units (LGU), the implementing partners; Benguet Business Society, Inc. (BSSI), the NGO partner in mobilizing communities and resources; and the Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), providing the academic foundation.

A few graduates coming from different associations shared their gratitude, reflections, insights, and experiences from their academic sessions. February 19, 2026Benguet State University formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Urdaneta City University on February 18, 2026, at the Function Hall of the International Relations Office. The event also culturally welcomed delegates from Urdaneta City University, together with representatives from Konan University, Japan.

The event formally commenced with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, followed by the BSU Hymn and the Urdaneta City University Hymn, symbolizing unity, institutional pride, and shared aspirations. Then, Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw, Deputy Director of the BSU International Relations Office, delivered the welcome remarks and formally introduced the distinguished delegates.

As part of the cultural welcome, the BSU KONTAD performers showcased a captivating cultural dance, ā€œBoogie,ā€ from Mountain Province. The performance reflected the rich traditions and heritage of the Cordillera region, warmly welcoming the guests through music and movement. Followed by an intermission by Sir Roldan Day-ong, adding energy to the celebration.

The Director for External Affairs and Linkages of UCU, Dr. Sonny Soriano, then presented an overview of the partnership between UCU and BSU. He emphasized the shared goals of both institutions in advancing academic collaboration, research initiatives, faculty and student exchanges, and global engagement. Dr. Amihan April Alcazar, the Acting University President of UCU, delivered a remarkable message expressing gratitude for the partnership and optimism for more collaborations. For an expanded overview, a brief video was presented showcasing UCUā€™s background, achievements, and academic programs to provide deeper insight into the universityā€™s profile.

International Relations Office Director, Dr. Rex John G. The event not only strengthened institutional partnerships but also celebrated unity in diversity, demonstrating how education serves as a bridge connecting communities, cultures, and nations.

The tour continued at the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, where Mr. Tristan B. Apiles introduced and guided them as they learn and experienced the Universityā€™s beekeeping projects. They also visited the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator and Innovation Center. ATBI/IC Director Ruth C. Diego welcomed them and showed them around the strawberry demo farm. The group then went to the actual strawberry farm, a popular tourist spot, where they were guided by Leonard D. Licudan from the ATBI staff.

To end the day, the delegates visited the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry. Abstract:Writing and presenting research are endeavors that senior high school students have to hurdle in the Philippines. Therefore, this research aimed at unravelling the dimensions of the difficulties faced by senior high school students in their research writing and research presentations through a sequential qualitative mixed-methods design. Primary data was gathered through a qualitative survey of 448 students, while secondary data was obtained via 10 focus groups with 7-10 members representing the different strands in one private senior high school in Baguio City, Philippines. All these participants were selected using combined quota and purposive sampling. Thematic analysis coupled with an iterative procedure was utilized to treat the harvested qualitative data. Findings revealed that the dimensions of the difficulties faced by student-researchers in research writing are health-related, manuscript-related, people-related, and resources-related, while the dimensions in research presentations are inner-directed and outer-directed. This research adds to the current body of knowledge, can contribute to achieving the United Nations sustainable development goal 4.5 and 4.7 on equal education access and global citizenship skills, and recommends research trajectories.

February 12, 2026On February 11, 2026, Benguet State University warmly welcomed Ms. Kikuchi Otoha, a Japan International Cooperation Agency Volunteer from Japan, who will support a project under the College of Agriculture, strengthening BSUā€™s initiatives in community development and agricultural innovation. Ms. Otoha is currently visiting the University for a few days of familiarization and community immersion.

Upon arrival, Ms. Otoha was received by representatives from the College of Agriculture, Ms. Dianne D. Pingalo, CA Staff, Ms. Karen T. Tocya, and Ms. Eunice B. Monang from the Department of Extension Education, Ms. Maricel V. Dacnes, Chair of the Department of Extension Education, Mr. Jake L. Galian, IRO Coordinator, and Mr. Leo Kimbungan from the Agriculture-Buguias Campus, who also assisted as translator to facilitate smoother communication. The team facilitated her arrival and initial orientation as she began her engagement with the University.

As part of her official introduction, Ms. Otoha paid a courtesy call to University President Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan. The meeting signified the Universityā€™s support for her upcoming work and reaffirmed BSUā€™s commitment to strengthening collaborative initiatives with international partners.

During her stay, Ms. Otoha will participate in community immersion and familiarization activities within the University and surrounding communities. These engagements will prepare her for her long-term stay and to effectively contribute to the College of Agricultureā€™s project and to broader extension and development initiatives.

February 12, 2026Benguet State University (BSU) faculty, staff, and alumni attended an information session on February 11, 2026, conducted by Fulbright Philippines, held at the International Relations Office (IRO) function hall.

Philippine-American Educational Foundation (PAEF), also known as the Fulbright Commission in the Philippines, is a non-profit binational organization established in 1946 by former American Senator J. William Fulbright. The Fulbright Commission in the Philippines was later established in 1948 through a bi-national agreement between the United States and the Philippine governments. The foreign exchange program fosters research collaborations, cultural understanding, and exchange of ideas among students, scholars, and professionals, promoting international education and excellent leadership between the two countries.

The scholarship programs offered were introduced by Maā€™am Anna Kathrina Tansengco, a Program Officer at Fulbright. The programs include; Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP), for early career professionals who pursue graduate studies or dissertation research which lasts for one (1) year; Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program (FVSP), which brings Filipino academics and professionals to lecture or conduct research in the US; Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program (HHFP), for mid-career professionals, which lasts for a year of combined non-graduate study and related practical and professional experience; Fulbright U.S.-ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program, which is open to all ASEAN member nations for a scholarly and professional research for 3-4 months on issues that are relevant and useful to member nations; Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, a fully funded exchange opportunity for early-career English teachers, who will serve as Filipino-language teaching assistants at U.S. universities for one (1) academic year; and the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Programs for International Teachers (DAI), which brings international primary and secondary teachers to the United States for a semester-long program.

In an open forum, Maā€™am Maria Nela Florendo, from the University of the Philippines Baguio; Maā€™am Anne Cabanilla, formerly from Baguio City High School; Sir Mark Lopez, from Mountain Province State University; and Sir Jet Tadeo, from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), all alumni of Fulbright Programs, shared their thoughts and insights with their first-hand Fulbright experiences of the programs they applied for. Queries and clarifications were also tackled during the session, giving the participants a clearer and broader understanding of the programs. February 11, 2026In a virtual conference, Benguet State University (BSU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) held at the function hall of the International Relations Office (IRO) on February 10, 2026. The MOU serves as proof of the partnership between the institution and the organization, promoting peace education.

HPWL, a non-profit and nongovernmental organization, was founded by Korean War veteran Mr. Lee Man Hee, who, at 19 years old, experienced the tragedies of war. The organization was founded in Seoul, South Korea, on May 25, 2013, to promote global peace and cessation of wars. At present, they operate 292 World Alliance of Religionsā€™ Peace (WARP) Offices around the world. In the Philippines, they have established numerous partnerships with schools, universities, and government agencies across 17 regions.

The conference was graced by Dr. Kenneth A. Laruan, University President; Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, International Relations Office Director; Sir Gleemoore Makie, Bokod Campus Administrator; Maā€™am Claire Jeon, International Coordinator of HWPL Peace Education Asia; Maā€™am Alecka Carcallas and Maā€™am Arianne Nolascoā€“ Peace Coordinators of HWPL Peace Education Philippines.

A brief video about HWPL was presented at the beginning of the meeting. Afterwards, Dr. Bawang presented a short overview regarding BSU as an institution. On the other hand, Maā€™am Jeon expressed their gratitude towards BSU; she also delivered a speech regarding how HWPL functions as an organization and its accomplishments through the years. Thereafter, a speech of acceptance was delivered by Dr. Laruan, sharing his thoughts and insights about the content of the MOU. He mentioned that peace education has been incorporated with selected Social Sciences subjects in accordance with the issued memorandum order by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), which requires the integration of peace education in the curriculum of state universities and colleges. Dr. Laruan looks forward to the visit of HWPL to the University for a friendly discussion and to having workshops with them in the future to strengthen the partnership and to craft programs, frameworks, projects, and activities.

An overview of future activities was presented by Maā€™am Carcallas, highlighting the main goal of the partnership, which is to build peace messengers, educators, and ambassadors around the world through collaborative efforts with school administrators, faculty, and staff, and students. ā€˜Peace Education Empowerment Programā€™ was presented as the action plan, which includes the “Promotion Campaign Trailā€ and ā€œPeace Educatorsā€™ Formativeā€. The program aims to promote peace education through the establishment of the Peace Club, Peace Education Department, Peace Education Bulletin, Peace Corner, Peace Room, Peace Library, Peace Garden, and Peace Monuments inside the campus. February 10, 2026ā€œBridging Futures: Expanding Filipino Access to International Educationā€ ā€“ an information session for students from the College of Engineering and the College of Forestry. The session was conducted by the PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services, discussing International Education and career opportunities abroad. The session was held at the function hall of the International Relations Office on February 6, 2026.

A total of 30 students from the CE and CF joined the information session. The engagement event tackled the services and benefits of the study abroad program, which aims to give students a broader choice by presenting them with broader opportunities to study and work abroad.

Ms. Irene Victore opened the event with a brief welcome before delving deeper into the session. She introduced the services PTCP Explore offers, such as study abroad, internship/traineeship for Agriculture and Hospitality, study tour, visa assistance, and passport assistance. These services are applicable to their partners from countries like Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Malta, New Zealand, Poland, and Spain.

Meanwhile, Mr. Matt Aldrei Salipio discussed the benefits of studying abroad. These benefits include; fast-paced and hands-on training, quality education in world top-ranked universities/schools with a duration of 1-3 years, a part-time opportunity while studying, scholarship opportunities, access to post-study work permit, pathway to permanent residency, cultural and social benefits, advanced technology, and lastly, for European countries under the Schengen visa, travel to 29 countries without additional visa.

Moreover, Ms. Emielyn Balagtas delved into the Proof of Funds and Post-Study Work permit. She explained the process of managing the funds and reminded the participants of the funds they need upon applying for the programs offered.

The session concluded with an open forum, as a few participants inquired about the matters they wanted to know more about in the offered programs, career opportunities, and studying abroad. February 4, 2026On February 3, 2025, an information session on the INTENSE Program, or the International Industrial Talents Education Special Program of Taiwan, was successfully held at the University.

The activity was made possible through the visit of delegates from Kun Shan University, Taiwan, INTENSE Program representatives, and Intact Base Philippines staff. The day began with a courtesy call at the Office of the President with University President Kenneth Alip Laruan, together with IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang and IRO Deputy Director Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw. Afterward, the IRO team guided the delegates to DSG Hall at the CTE Building for the conduct of the information session.

The session was attended by Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering students from the BSU-College of Engineering, who actively participated throughout the discussion.

The program formally opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Doreen, who also introduced the visiting delegates, including Prof. Chiu Kou-Chun, Dean of the Office of International Affairs of Kun Shan University, Dr. Mike Chu, CEO of the INTENSE Program, Ms. Wing Hsiao and Ms. Belle Cheng, Project Managers, and Ms. Joy Fojas, General Manager of Intact Base Philippines, and Ms. Jonah Ponce, Intact Base Staff.

Prof. Chiu delivered a short message, expressing his gratitude to the University and introducing the INTENSE Program. This was followed by an engaging information session led by Ms. Joy Fojas and Dr. Mike Chu, who introduced and discussed Kun Shan University and the INTENSE Program. They informed the students of the educational opportunities available, as well as the program’s benefits and requirements.

The program concluded with a closing message from IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, who shared his personal experience studying in Taiwan and encouraged the students to try an international learning opportunity.

This meaningful activity was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the visiting institutions and the IRO team, with Ms. Joy Fojas for reaching out to the University and initiating the coordination that led to this opportunity.
