Warm Welcome – Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency Visits BSU

Benguet State University (BSU) warmly welcomed Mr. Ibrahim Katirci, Country Coordinator of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), along with two project staff members from the agency during their recent visit to the University on March 12, 2026.

The guests were accompanied by International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang, along with other IRO staff members, as they paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the University President, where they were received by Dr. Josel M. Florentin, Vice President for Business Affairs, and Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension. The meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen institutional connections and explore potential areas of cooperation between BSU and TİKA.

Following the courtesy visit, the group proceeded to the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where Mr. Vecker Tero, IHFSA Farm Supervisor, together with Ms. Loida A. Sadey, Science Research Assistant, guided the visitors around the facility. During the tour, the team shared insights on the different coffee drying methods, processing techniques, roasting practices, operational requirements, and the equipment currently used by the Institute. The activity also provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange insights and explore possible areas of future collaboration between BSU and TİKA.

June 10, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed representatives from Muyuan Foods Co., Ltd., one of China’s leading agribusiness companies and a global leader in modern livestock production, during their visit to the University on June 9, 2026.

The delegation was received by Vice President for Academic Affairs Janet P. Pablo, International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang, and IRO staff during a courtesy visit at the Office of the University President.

Led by Human Resources Manager Li Yaohui, the delegation visited BSU to explore potential cooperation in support of the company’s long-term development goals in the piggery industry. During the courtesy visit, the delegation also shared its plans and potential cooperation initiatives in the fields of agricultural technology, professional talent development, and other related areas.

Following the courtesy visit, the delegation met with representatives from the College of Engineering, the College of Home Economics and Technology, and the Department of Crop Science and the Department of Animal Science of the College of Agriculture at the IRO Function Hall to further discuss potential areas of collaboration.

During the meeting, representatives from Muyuan Foods presented the company’s innovations in smart pig farming technologies, biosecurity systems, and sustainable livestock production practices. Discussions focused on opportunities for student internships, recruitment of graduates, and possible industry-academe partnerships in agriculture and other related fields.

The meeting also opened discussions on the possible establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Benguet State University and Muyuan Foods Co., Ltd. as a framework for future collaboration.

Through this engagement, BSU and Muyuan Foods Co., Ltd. look forward to exploring opportunities that foster innovation, professional growth, and meaningful international partnerships.

June 8, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed a delegation led by the Consul & Head of Post Li Xiaoyan of the Chinese Consulate in Laoag during a courtesy visit on June 4, 2026, at the BSU-Office of the President. They were received by University President Kenneth A. Laruan and International Relations Office Director Rex John G. Bawang. The meeting provided an opportunity to explore possible academic collaborations between the University and Chinese universities. An exchange of tokens of appreciation also took place during the meeting.

The delegation later toured the BSU campus, including a visit to the BSU Marketing Center, where they sampled and purchased locally made university products.

May 21, 2026Benguet State University once again warmly welcomed delegates from the University of Huelva and a scientist under the Balik Scientist Program through a cultural welcome organized by the BSU International Relations Office at the IRO Hall on May 20, 2026.

The event honored visiting delegates from UHU, Santiago Rodríguez Muriel, psychologist and educator, and Luiz Rodrigues, a language professional, teacher, and researcher, together with Flor Crisanta F. Galvez, a Balik Scientist who earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the University of Georgia. The guests were welcomed through cultural performances featuring traditional dances by the BSU KONTAD Cultural Dance Troupe and a Daing chant presented by faculty members from the Department of Filipino of the College of Arts and Humanities.

The celebration concluded with a community dance led by KONTAD, where delegates and participants joined together in a shared cultural experience that highlighted friendship, cultural appreciation, and international camaraderie. Following the community dance, the delegates, BSU faculty and staff, and students shared a fellowship dinner, providing an opportunity for meaningful conversations, cultural exchange, and stronger connections among participants.

The event also marked the conclusion of the short mobility program of the UHU delegates at BSU and the beginning of the university’s 45-day engagement with the Balik Scientist. Through these initiatives, the university continues to strengthen international collaboration, academic exchange, and research engagement with global partners.

May 20, 2026The Benguet State University, through the Faculty and Staff Research, Innovation, and Commercialization Office (FSRIC) and College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, successfully conducted the Welcome and Orientation Program for the Balik Scientist Program in partnership with DOST-PCAARRD on May 18, 2026.

The activity formally welcomed Dr. Flor Crisanta F. Galvez, under the Balik Scientist Program, strengthened collaboration among stakeholders, and provided an overview of the projects and initiatives to be implemented under the program.

The program commenced with an opening prayer led by Ms. Lorie Jean D. Benwasan, FSRIC Staff, followed by the acknowledgement of participants delivered by Mr. Caster Troy B. Iblogan, FSRIC Staff. Representatives from various university offices and partner agencies attended the orientation to express their support for the university’s research and internationalization initiatives.

A special message was delivered by Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension, who highlighted the importance of the Balik Scientist Program in advancing research, innovation, and knowledge exchange within the university and the community.

Mr. Lesley Dale G. Umayat, FSRIC Director, formally introduced the Balik Scientist and recognized the expertise and contributions that the program brings to the university. This was followed by an orientation on the Balik Scientist Program facilitated by Ms. Michelle Purisma Caparas of DOST-PCAARRD, who discussed the objectives, opportunities, and support mechanisms of the program for both the institution and participating scientists.

An overview of the projects and activities was presented by Ms. Daena Mariele D. Dar, FSRIC Staff, outlining the planned initiatives, collaborative engagements, and expected outcomes of the partnership. The session also included feedback and recommendations from the representatives of DOST-PCAARRD to further enhance the implementation of the projects and ensure alignment with institutional and national development goals.

Dr. Flor Crisanta F. Galvez, Balik Scientist, delivered a special message expressing gratitude for the warm welcome and reaffirming her commitment to contributing expertise and knowledge to the university’s research and extension endeavors. She also encouraged continued collaboration and innovation among faculty members, researchers, and students.

To conclude the program, Ms. Doreen I. Allasiw, Deputy Director of the International Relations Office, delivered the closing message and presented the ways forward for the partnership. She emphasized the importance of sustaining international collaborations, strengthening research networks, and maximizing the opportunities brought by the Balik Scientist Program for the growth and development of the university community.

May 20, 2026A delegation of 40 students from the National University of Singapore under the Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SAFI) visited Benguet State University on May 18, 2026, as part of their 10-day study visit in the Philippines conducted in partnership with Ateneo de Manila University. The delegation was led by Dr. Thian-Guan Peck, together with Dr. Lisa C. Antonio.

Held at the BSU La Trinidad Campus from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, the visit focused on strengthening the students’ understanding of sustainability, innovation, and community engagement aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study program explored three major themes: understanding the Philippines and civic responsibility, eco-tourism and sustainable practices, and innovation and entrepreneurship.

During the visit, the group participated in an orientation on the Agribusiness Technology Business Incubator and Innovation Center (ATBI-IC), where they learned about BSU’s initiatives in microenterprise development, innovation programs, and incubation services. The students also experienced a guided tour of the Strawberry Farm led by Mr. Leonard D. Licudan, which highlighted sustainable farming practices and local agribusiness models.

The delegation further engaged with local microentrepreneurs involved in strawberry farming, gaining insights into enterprise development and the positive impact of community-based initiatives. Through these activities, the visitors were able to witness firsthand how BSU integrates research, enterprise incubation, and community engagement to support sustainable development.

May 20, 2026The College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) of Benguet State University, through its Department of Filipino, successfully conducted the session entitled “Bridging Cultures Through Language: Filipino and Spanish Connections in Communication and Identity,” on May 19, 2026, featuring visiting lecturers from the University of Huelva. The activity highlighted the shared linguistic and cultural influences between the Filipino and Spanish languages while fostering academic collaboration and intercultural understanding.

The program formally opened with the Opening Remarks delivered by Dr. Ronda B. Tullay, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, who welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of language in preserving culture and strengthening global connections. This was followed by the rationale presented by Dr. Penelope F. Tica-a, who underscored the significance of exploring the historical and linguistic ties between the Philippines and Spain.

During Session 1, entitled “One Language, Two Nations: Filipinos in Philippine-Spanish Relations,” Dr. Janet B. Mede, Chair of the Department of Filipino, discussed the enduring influence of the Spanish language on Filipino communication, literature, and identity. The session provided insights into how centuries of interaction shaped the linguistic landscape of the Philippines.

In Session 2, “From ‘Kumusta’ to ‘Hola’: A Phonological Journey of Filipino and Spanish Expressions,” Dr. Marilyn W. Macwes explored the similarities and transformations of sounds, words, and expressions shared by Filipino and Spanish languages. Participants gained a deeper appreciation of the phonological connections that continue to exist in everyday communication.

An Open Forum moderated by Dr. Faustina T. Dio-as allowed participants to exchange ideas, ask questions, and share reflections regarding language, culture, and identity. The discussion further enriched the learning experience and encouraged meaningful intercultural dialogue.

The activity also featured a collaborative segment entitled “Exploring Partnerships Through Collaboration and Team Teaching,” led by Prof. Luiz Rodrigues of the University of Huelva, together with the Department of Filipino faculty members. The session highlighted opportunities for academic partnerships, collaborative instruction, and future international engagements between the institutions.

May 19, 2026The Department of 𝑷𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚, 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 of the Benguet State University College of Social Sciences conducted a seminar entitled “Psychology in the Workplace: Migration, Gender Dynamics, and Work-Life Integration” in collaboration with the Benguet State University International Relations Office, featuring visiting lecturers from the University of Huelva as keynote speakers. The seminar was held at the IRO Hall on May 19, 2026, and was attended by university staff, faculty members, and students.

Santiago Rodríguez Muriel, a psychologist and educator based in Huelva, Spain, served as the main speaker and delivered his presentation entitled “Understanding Migration: A Psychosocial Perspective.” He discussed the reasons why people migrate, the psychological effects of migration on mental health, the importance of psychological support for displaced communities, and cross-cultural strategies in working with migrant populations.

Following the presentation, Luiz Rodrigues shared his personal experiences and challenges as someone who has also undergone migration from one country to another, giving participants meaningful insights into migration, cultural adaptation, and workplace integration.

The seminar provided an opportunity for participants to gain a deeper understanding of migration through psychological and cultural perspectives, while promoting meaningful discussions on empathy, inclusivity, and global engagement in today’s interconnected world.

May 18, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed Mr. Santiago Rodríguez Muriel, psychologist and educator based at the University of Huelva, Spain, for a short mobility program under the Erasmus+ KA171 Programme. Joining him was Mr. Luiz Rodrigues, a language professional, teacher, and researcher. The delegates were formally introduced to the BSU community by International Relations Office Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw during the university’s Flag Raising Ceremony before proceeding to a courtesy call with University President Kenneth A. Laruan alongside the International Relations Office staff at the Office of the University President.

As part of the visit, the delegates toured key university offices where they learned about BSU’s initiatives on employee welfare, student development, inclusivity, and mental well-being. At the Human Resource Management Office and Human Resource Development Office, they were welcomed by Ms. Maricris P. Lad-ey-Neyney and Ms. Jenny D. Agadan, who shared insights on the services offered, while at the Gender and Development Office, Mr. Jude Tayaben shared the university’s gender-responsive programs. At the Office of Student Services, Ms. Erlyn Honeylette Marquez, together with OSS unit heads, presented student support and wellness initiatives.

The delegates also visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC), where they were introduced to BSU’s bee research and honey production initiatives. They also toured the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where Mr. Vecker Tero, IHFSA Farm Supervisor, shared insights into BSU’s coffee production practices.

To have insights into our history and culture, the delegates also visited the BSU University Museum and the Benguet Museum, where they learned more about the rich history of our University and the cultural heritage of the region through presentations by BSU Museum volunteers Mr. Jude Segovia and Ms. Edel Paleyan, and Provincial Tourism Officer Kenneth Kelcho.

The tour concluded at the BSU Strawberry Farms, guided by Leonard D. Licudan, where the delegates were introduced to the university’s strawberry farming initiatives and local agricultural practices.

In this year’s results, BSU achieved a significant milestone by ranking 𝟏𝟐𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, a major improvement from its 172nd place in 2025, showing its steady progress in innovation and institutional development.

𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭:Higher education institutions (HEIs) contribute to sustainable development by producing research that supports the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study mapped the research contributions of top HEIs in the Philippines to the SDGs. It examined the number of research outputs associated with each goal and analyzed correlations in contributions across regions. The study also identified leading authors, institutions, highly cited works, and recurring research themes. Using bibliometric analysis, the study evaluated 61,440 documents produced by faculty and researchers from selected top universities. Findings showed that HEIs were most productive in research related to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and least productive in SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). The analysis also revealed that some SDGs demonstrate strong interconnections, while others show weaker relationships. Additionally, the study highlighted factors influencing research productivity at individual, institutional, regional, and international levels. It demonstrated how science mapping can be used to track research trends and patterns over time. The findings help identify gaps in SDG-related research, particularly in underrepresented targets. Future research may explore SDG interrelationships further to develop strategies that address multiple goals simultaneously and guide more integrated and impactful research efforts.

May 5, 2026Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office (IRO), held an exploratory meeting with the Helping Empowering Reaching Out (HERO) Group on May 5, 2026, at the International Relations Office Building.

The HERO Group is a civil society organization that focuses on four main areas: health, education, livelihood, and sustainability. The group operates in 12 provinces and implements programs that support individuals on the spectrum, helping them develop skills and transition to livelihood opportunities.

The meeting was attended by IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang, HERO Group Founders and CEO Lormie Garay and Rod Eric Garay, IRO Deputy Director Doreen Allasiw, IRO Coordinator Decimam Carantes, and IRO staff Racquel Fatog.

During the discussion, both sides explored emerging technologies and how these can support more sustainable, inclusive, and accessible programs. These efforts aim to help the University provide services that respond to the needs of its diverse academic community, including persons with disabilities and individuals with special needs.

They also shared ideas on assistive technologies, knowledge exchange, and possible joint initiatives that can benefit both students and communities. The meeting opened opportunities for future partnerships, including projects, trainings, and community-based programs.

𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭:In health discourses, Indigenous Healing is marginalized by the State itself, specifically coming from the Biomedicine health workers who would always uphold Biomedicine and stay silent towards indigenous healing. Silencing is also found in the information drives of health agencies, which positions indigenous healing as unfounded. The lack of concrete policies supporting indigenous healing further puts Biomedicine in a power-holding position and putting other health systems as merely “alternatives”.Despite this vulnerability of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) to systematically driven, hegemonic agendas, indigenous is thriving in the cultural assertions of IPs as they sustainably validate their values and cultural integrity. Their self-determination is manifested in their capacity to choose indigenous healing as the first option when met with health concerns. To ensure that indigenous healing science is innovated on and sustained, these are institutionalized in larger cultural practices. Indigenous healing is likewise privileged in environmental conservation practices of IPs. The environment is the space of healing if conserved. In the spirit of multiculturalism, where various cultures are accommodated, it becomes essential to assert that humans and their cultures do not exist in isolation. Diversity should be embraced, differences should be accepted and understood. Discursive spaces espousing pluriversal epistemologies or multiple knowledges encapsulated in the concepts and practices of IPs should be upheld and sustained.

April 30, 2026The partnership between Benguet State University (BSU) and the Evangelische Hochschule Ludwigsburg (EHL) is a story of shared commitment turning into meaningful action, grounded in values that promote social responsibility, human dignity, and care for the environment. It began in September 2021 with the signing of an agreement that opened opportunities for academic cooperation, faculty exchange, and student mobility.

From 2023 to 2024, the collaboration came to life through the Transdisciplinary Intercultural International Partnership (TIIP) Program, enabling BSU faculty and students to take part in international exchanges, assemblies, and collaborative meetings. Primarily supported through EHL funding and supplemented by BSU, these activities enhanced intercultural academic engagement and strengthened shared scholarly perspectives on social work and global challenges. Notable components of this collaboration included institutional leadership visits, participation in the TIIP Annual Assembly, and BSU’s hosting of the MISOTRANS Network Meeting in September 2024.

A significant milestone followed on April 20–24, 2026, when BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan and College of Agriculture Dean Constantino T. Sudaypan represented the university at the 2026 International Assembly of EHL and its partners, held under the theme “Social Work, Human Rights, and the Rights of Nature.” During this gathering, President Laruan and EHL Rector Prof. Dr. Andrea Dietzsch signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming a partnership rooted in shared academic goals and a commitment to people, communities, and the planet. April 30, 2026The College of Social Sciences of Benguet State University recently concluded a meaningful extension activity titled “Cordillera Cultural Day and Indigenous People’s Discourse” on April 25, 2025. Held at the BSU Gymnasium, the event marked the 42nd Peoples’ Cordillera Day. This annual observance honors Macli-ing Dulag, the Kalinga leader assassinated in 1980 for his brave opposition to the Chico River Dam Project. By gathering various stakeholders, the university successfully turned a historical commemoration into a platform for modern advocacy and education.

The activity was organized by the Department of History and Philosophy in collaboration with the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), Cordillera Youth Center (CYC), and Dap-ay ti Kultura ti Kordilyera (DKK). Throughout the event, participants from the academe, local government units, and indigenous communities engaged in capacity-building seminars. These sessions explored the historical struggles of the Cordillera and the long journey toward self-determination. The speakers emphasized that the death of Macli-ing Dulag did not end the resistance but instead reinforced the conviction of indigenous peoples to protect their ancestral domains and autonomy.

The activity successfully integrated several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the discussion to show how local struggles fit into global targets. It promoted SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing a free and open learning space for all participants to study history and rights. The event also advanced SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by ensuring that the voices and research of women leaders were central to the conversation. To address the gap between different social groups, the discourse also focused on SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by highlighting the specific challenges faced by marginalized indigenous communities.

The program further addressed SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by empowering citizens to take an active role in protecting their local environment and heritage. The pursuit of social justice and the promotion of active citizenship directly supported SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Finally, the entire event was a testament to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as it brought together the university, government units, and grassroots organizations. By linking these global goals to the local history of Macli-ing Dulag, the activity showed that protecting indigenous rights is essential for a sustainable and just future for everyone.

Participants discussed how the concerns of the Cordilleran people have evolved since the 1980s due to socio-economic changes. However, the core issues remain the same- the demand for formal recognition of indigenous rights and the need for a fair distribution of resources in national development plans. The discourse provided a conducive space for different generations to talk about these growing concerns. It reminded everyone that the fight for justice is a continuous process that requires the involvement of the entire community, regardless of age or gender.

The success of this event leaves a significant challenge for all who attended and those who read about it today. History is not a silent record of the past; it is a call to action. The bravery of those who came before us serves as a reminder of our own responsibility to our land and our neighbors. We must ask ourselves if we are actively protecting the heritage and the rights that were fought for us. We are challenged to be conscious agents of social change and to keep the spirit of siged, or the common good, alive in our daily lives. The story of the Cordillera is still being written, and it is up to us to ensure that the next chapters are defined by justice and equity.//ATBassit

April 29, 2026A vibrant celebration of culture and cuisine took place at the BSU Shimomura Park on April 28–29, 2026, as third-year students from the Department of Hospitality Management, College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, conducted their International Food Fair. Guided by the theme “Global Bites: Let the Flavors Bloom” and “Flavor Without Borders,” the event highlighted both creativity and practical learning.

More than just a food showcase, the activity served as the students’ final examination for their courses in International Cuisine and Introduction to Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions. It provided them with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in planning, organizing, and executing a large-scale event.

The fair featured booths inspired by different countries, each designed to reflect its assigned culture. From flags to traditional outfits, every detail added to the immersive experience. The booths featured a wide selection of dishes representing France, Thailand, the Middle East, the Caribbean, the Philippines, Mexico, South America, and Italy, each offering a taste of global flavors in one venue.

The Food Booths officially opened through a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the start of the two-day culinary showcase. Students took on various roles, from food preparation to booth management, demonstrating teamwork and professionalism throughout the event. Adding depth to the experience, Mr. Gerry Gabertan, co-founder of Nori Sake Sushi and Chill, was invited as a guest speaker. He shared his journey in building a local business that offers international cuisine, along with insights and lessons that inspired students to pursue innovation and excellence in the field.

At the same time, on April 29, second-year students from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics also conducted their Global Entrepreneurial Food Fair, a Mini Food Fair featuring a delicious mix of native and international cuisines at the BSU Marketing Center parking lot. The activity also served as the culmination and final examination for their subject, Native and Foreign Cookery.

The mini fair featured an outfit showcase and creatively prepared food booths representing different countries, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, China, Australia, and the British Aisle. Students presented a mix of native and international cuisines, showing their skills in food preparation and presentation while highlighting cultural diversity.

These events also drew a lively crowd, gathering students, BSU staff and faculty, and even members of the local community, all coming together to experience and enjoy the diverse food prepared by the students. The series of food fairs reflected the students’ hard work and dedication, showing how classroom learning can be applied in real-life settings. Through these activities, students developed their culinary and organizational skills while also building confidence and teamwork in both culinary arts and event management. The event creates a meaningful impact by promoting cultural appreciation among attendees and celebrating the richness of global cultures through food. It also supported student-led initiatives that connect the university with the wider community.

April 28, 2026Benguet State University welcomed representatives from the US Embassy’s Regional English Language Office (RELO) on April 28, 2026, at the Office of the University President. The delegation was led by Mr. Jeffrey McIlvenna, Regional English Language Officer, and Ms. Cherylle Catacutan, RELO Cultural Affairs Assistant, together with Ms. Stephenie Busbus, Director of the Office of Global Relations and Alumni Affairs and Scholarship Programs of Saint Louis University.

The group was warmly received by University President Kenneth A. Laruan, alongside IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang, and American English alumni from the Department of English, College of Arts and Humanities, who have actively participated in the Regional English Language Office (RELO) programs. Among the participating alumni were Samuel S. Poliden, Ronda B. Tullay, Joseph B. Quinto, Kara S. Panolong, and Julienne C. Cariño.

Abstract:

This study investigated the influence of rice husk biochar (RHBC) prepared at 300, 500, 700, and 900 °C (BC300, BC500, BC700, and BC900) on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste. The properties of RHBC related to AD, including high heating value, specific surface, porosity, elemental mapping through scanning electron microscopy – energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), thermal decomposition, electrical conductivity (EC), elemental composition, functional groups, and mcrA gene copy numbers, were investigated. The specific surface area and mcrA gene copy numbers are listed as a property of the RHBC relating to AD. Parameters investigated during the AD process were biomethane potential, biomethane production rate, biodegradability, variation in the total volatile fatty acids, specific volatile fatty acids, pH, EC, and chemical oxygen demand, functional groups, changes in the nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, and nitrogen concentration. The study show that increase in the pyrolysis temperature (300 to 900 °C) resulted to the devolatilization and heteroatom removal in the RHBCs, resulting in decreased concentrations of H, N, and S, while the C content was relatively consistent across pyrolysis temperatures (38.09% to 39.62%). The reactors dopped with BC300 had the highest cumulative BMP at 335.76 mL/g-VS followed by BC500, BC700, and BC900 at 325.63, 316.76, and 311.36 mL/g-VS, respectively. These findings suggest that, compared to highly carbonized biochars made at higher temperatures, lower-temperature biochars, which retain more functional groups and labile components, offer better conditions for the production of biomethane.

The event has gathered 116 participants from 42 countries and higher education institutions (HEIs), creating a vibrant platform for academic exchange and global collaboration.

As the International Staff Teaching Week continues, participants are engaging in a range of academic and cultural activities. These include institutional presentations, lectures by visiting professors, and professional development sessions for staff. They are also taking part in socio-cultural events that provide opportunities to experience Lithuanian culture, build international networks, exchange best practices, and strengthen cooperation between their home institutions and Vytautas Magnus University.

April 22, 2026Benguet State University, through the College of Social Sciences (CSS), held an intercultural exchange in collaboration with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU), International Relations Office (IRO), the Office of the Extension Services (OES), the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), and the Gender and Development Office (GAD). The event took place on April 22, 2026, at the CAS Annex Open Ground.

The event was graced by Sir Stanley Anongos, Dean of the College of Social Sciences; Sir Rex John Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office; Sir Jude Tayaben, Director of the Gender and Development Office; Sir Roscinto Ian Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension; Ma’am Gigy G. Banes, Project Leader of OPAPRU SIPAT IKS Project 4, and the course facilitator. Also in attendance were teachers from DepEd-Benguet and DepEd-Baguio, faculty members from the College of Social Sciences and National University- Manila, and students from various degree programs and Benguet National High School, all gathered in support of cultural appreciation and academic engagement.

The intercultural exchange featured vibrant presentations of indigenous songs, dances, and foods representing the six provinces of Cordillera. These were prepared and performed by third-year students from the BS Nutrition and Dietetics and BS Food Technology programs as part of their course ‘Cordillera: History and Socio-Cultural Heritage (CORDI 101).’ Each group highlighted unique cultural practices, offering the audience a deeper understanding of the region’s rich and diverse heritage. The display of traditional cuisine emphasized the connection between food, identity, and community life.

In the afternoon, participants engaged in indigenous games. The students took part in activities such as the kadang-kadang, tug of war, arm wrestling, and sack race, fostering camaraderie and shared appreciation for traditional forms of recreation that have long been part of community life.

The activity aimed to encourage and educate younger generations about the importance of cultural identity by immersing them in an actual and experiential learning environment. Through active participation, attendees were able to not only observe but also practice and appreciate these cultural traditions. In her closing remarks, Ma’am Kristine Dela Cruz challenged the participants to “become ambassadors of these cultural identities outside BSU,” noting the role of the students in preserving and promoting cultural heritage beyond the university setting. //R. April 22, 2026Benguet State University is participating in the International Week – Assembly of University Partners of Evangelische Hochschule Ludwigsburg (Protestant University of Applied Sciences) in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

The event carries the theme “Social Work, Human Rights, and the Rights of Nature,” drawing from long-standing international collaborations addressing migration, poverty, conflict, climate justice, and Indigenous peoples’ rights—key issues affecting Global South societies within a neoliberal context. From a human ecology perspective, these concerns highlight the urgent need to address the commodification of nature.

BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan and College of Agriculture Dean Constantino T. Sudaydan proudly represented the university, sharing meaningful insights on “Interactive Practices and Learning Spaces” — strengthening collaboration and advancing innovative approaches in social work, extension, and teaching and learning.

This participation underscores BSU’s commitment to global collaboration, transformative learning, human rights, and environmental stewardship.
