International Wetlands Day is celebrated every February 2nd to remember the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. This day helps raise awareness about the importance of wetlands in our environment. Wetlands provide homes for wildlife, clean water, help control floods, and help in fighting climate change.

The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, is a Ramsar site, an ecological and cultural area. The marsh acts as a natural flood buffer, absorbing excess rainwater and supporting diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, endangered Philippine crocodile, and various fish species. It also helps sustain Indigenous Manobo communities living in floating houses. However, threats like deforestation, pollution, and climate change endanger its ecosystem.
Taking immediate action will help safeguard this sanctuary and ensure its protection for future generations.
