CALL FOR APPLICATION – Unpad ASEAN Scholarship 2025

Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) in Indonesia is offering a fully funded Master’s scholarship for citizens of ASEAN member countries (including Timor-Leste, but not Indonesia). This program gives students and professionals a chance to study at UNPAD and helps strengthen cooperation and leadership across ASEAN.

The scholarship consists of two master’s level tracks:

  1. Master’s Leadership Track: For mid-to senior-level professionals in government, public institutions, private enterprises, NGOs, or academia who aim to strengthen their leadership and research capabilities.
    Eligibility:
  • ASEAN citizen (including Timor-Leste, excluding Indonesia).
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum GPA 3.0/4.0).
  • Minimum three years of professional experience at the middle-management level or higher.
  • Proven leadership record and proficiency in English or Bahasa Indonesia.
  1. Master’s Excellence Track: For academically outstanding ASEAN citizens seeking advanced studies and professional excellence.
    Eligibility:
  • ASEAN citizen (including Timor-Leste, excluding Indonesia).
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum GPA 3.0/4.0).
  • Proficiency in English or Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Commitment to return and contribute to their home country after completion.

Scholarship Benefits (for both programs):

  • Tuition fee waiver for the duration of the Master’s program (up to 3 semesters)
  • Free student visa application, KITAS, and stay permit processing for the study period; costs covered
  • Return economy class airfare reimbursement, up to a maximum of IDR 10.000.000 (only once, maximum IDR 5,000,000 for each departure)
  • Monthly living allowance (IDR 4.000.000 per month, including monthly accommodation [on or off campus] cost based on participant preferences)
  • Settlement allowance (one-time, IDR 1.500.000)
  • Health insurance coverage during the study period (around IDR 6.000.000 per year)
  • Indonesian language course (IDR 12.000.000, up to 1 semester, available to applicants who do not meet the required Indonesian language proficiency but are applying a master’s program taught in Indonesian)
  • Research/thesis writing support fund (one-time after successful thesis proposal, IDR 10.000.000)

November 27, 2025Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, is pleased to announce that the International Cooperation Department of Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), Lithuania, will be hosting its International Staff Week on 20–24 April 2026.

Benguet State University has one (1) Erasmus+ grant allocated for a teaching mobility or training mobility to VMU. In line with Erasmus+ priorities, teaching mobility applications will be given preference.

November 26, 2025Benguet State University warmly welcomed the delegation from Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU). The visiting team was composed of Year 3 and 4 Nursing students, led by Assoc. Prof. Pei-Ling Wu, Deputy Director of the Department of Nursing, and Assoc. Prof. Yen-Chiao Angel Lu. Their visit is part of the growing partnership and exchange activities between BSU and CSMU.

To introduce the visitors to the university, the group was brought on a campus tour. They explored key areas of BSU, such as the University Library, where they learned about available learning resources; the University Clinic, which showed how basic health services are provided; and the University Museum, where they saw the rich culture and history of the University. The team also visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, where they were introduced to BSU’s work on beekeeping and research, and finally, the Strawberry Farm at the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center, a well-known symbol of La Trinidad.

A welcome program was later held at the International Relations Office. In the welcome message, Dean Mark U. Gay-as, of the Benguet State University College of Nursing Community, officially welcomed the visitors and shared the story of BSU’s partnership with CSMU, including how both institutions plan to continue to work together through academic linkages and student learning activities. He also mentioned the plans for the next days of the visit. Associate Dean Jude L. Tayaben introduced the members of the visiting team, and IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang gave a short message to close the program.

After lunch, the visitors went to the College of Nursing for a hands-on experience. They observed the Nursing classrooms, visited the Simulation Laboratory, and learned how BSU trains its students using different equipment and setups. Their day ended with a clinical exposure at Benguet General Hospital, where they were able to see actual hospital operations and patient care practices in the local setting.

Overall, the day ended on a high note, with the visitors gaining new learning experiences from the campus tour, the simulation lab activities, and their clinical exposure at Benguet General Hospital. It was a full and productive day that helped them get a glimpse of BSU’s programs, culture, and community. This visit is only the beginning, as the team still has more activities lined up in the next few days, giving them more chances to learn, connect, and deepen the partnership between BSU and CSMU.

November 21, 2025This November 21, 2025, Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, warmly welcomed the visiting team from the UP Korea Research Center (UP KRC), a Korean studies hub that works across the UP constituent universities to develop Korean Studies Academic programs and research, and also assist other educational institutions that are interested in building Korean studies for their faculty and students.

The group was led by UP KRC Director, Dr. Kyungmin Bae, together with staff member Pamela Jacar, research assistant Venus Samonte, and a Professor from De La Salle University, Dr. Bubbles Beverly Asor. Their visit aimed to learn more about BSU and explore possible academic connections that may benefit both institutions.

IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang, with staff member Raquel M. Fatog, received the guests and introduced them to BSU’s goals and internationalization efforts. The meeting became a valuable chance for the UP Korea Research Center to share who they are, the work they do. In return, Benguet State University presented its academic offerings, university profile, and some practices that reflect the institution’s strengths and areas of growth. These exchanges helped both sides understand each other’s direction and identify points where their interests meet.

Through their discussions, the visiting team and BSU explored possible areas for collaboration, including research, culture, and academic linkages that may be developed in the coming years. Both parties expressed interest in building a relationship that can support future joint initiatives and contribute to wider cooperation among universities. Their engagement also opens pathways for BSU to broaden its connections within wider academic networks.

Both UP KRC and BSU look forward to continuing their conversations and opening more opportunities for meaningful cooperation that will benefit students, faculty, and the wider academic community. November 20, 2025On November 20, 2025, Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, warmly welcomed guests from Vaasan Ammattikorkeakoulu University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Finland, today. The visiting team consisted of Mr. Jun Nakamura, International Communication and Marketing Assistant, and Ms. Karina Björninen, representing VAMK’s Health Care and Social Services programs.

They were received by IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang and staff member Racquel M. Fatog, together with college representatives Greg B. Landocan from the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, Jake L. Galian from Benguet State University-College of Agriculture, and Frevy T. Orencia from the Benguet State University-College of Information Sciences.

The visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to strengthen academic and research linkages. VAMK and BSU also introduced to each other key information about their universities, allowing both sides to better understand their academic strengths, programs, and institutional priorities. Discussions also centered on the Nursing program and departments related to Business and Technology, along with other fields such as research that may serve as pathways for future collaboration.

Looking beyond today’s visit, BSU and VAMK hope to build stronger academic connections, explore joint programs, and create opportunities for students and staff to learn from each other. November 20, 2025On September 12, 2025, representatives from offices and communities in the Cordillera commemorated the peace accord that occurred 39 years in Mt. Data Hotel in Bauko, Mountain Province.  Sipat is a part of a traditional peace-making ceremony that involves the exchange of gifts from both parties. 

Benguet State University (BSU) reaffirmed its commitment to peace and development by joining the 39th anniversary of the Sipat. The university was represented by Dr. Stanley F. Anongos Jr., Dr. Leonardo T. Samonte, Dr. Maria Theresa B. Dolipas, Mr. Mark Joshua S. Balao-as, and Mr. Arnel T. Bassit.

The participation of BSU not only supports the national call for a just and lasting peace in the Cordillera but also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it advances SDG 9—building resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive development—and SDG 10—reducing inequalities.

The commemoration, led by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) together with peace stakeholders and local leaders, highlighted peace-building projects, infrastructure, and development initiatives worth ₱1.8 billion. These projects, set for implementation from Fiscal Year 2024 to 2026, aim to strengthen the Cordillera region and sustain its path toward peace and progress.

Part of this effort is an impact study on government programs for former CPLA members, commissioned by OPAPRU to BSU. The study seeks to shed light on the stories of CPLA members as they reintegrate into society—serving as a testament to the continuing journey toward lasting peace in the region.

As the community remembered the Sipat of 1986, the event also reflected on its enduring promise of autonomy. Over the years, the Sipat has become more than a peace accord—it has grown into a cultural symbol of unity and the Cordillerans’ shared desire for self-determination. The call for autonomy remains alive in the hearts of the people, even as challenges of unity and readiness continue to shape the journey toward full autonomy.

The celebration was graced by Contad, BSU’s Cultural Dance Troupe, who performed the Bendian Dance. The dance, born from the story of Apo Anno and shaped by steps gathered across the Cordillera, stood as a symbol of peace and unity.

November 18, 2025On November 17, 2025, Benguet State University warmly welcomed representatives from Alana Kaye College, Australia. The delegation was led by Ms. Alana Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, together with Mr. Arvin Alcantara, Country Manager of Alana Kaye International, Philippines.

This meeting was made possible through the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Cordillera Administrative Region, led by Assistant Secretary Antonio R. Tabora Jr., together with Socrates Abella Jr.

The visitors paid a courtesy call and held a short meeting with the University President, Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan, and the Director of the BSU International Relations Office, Dr. Rex John G. Bawang. The purpose of their visit was to explore possible academic and institutional partnerships between the two institutions.

During the meeting, Ms. Anderson and Mr. Alcantara shared their proposal for a Transnational Education (TNE) partnership in Baguio City and the Cordillera Administrative Region. Their plan focuses on offering internationally recognized Australian qualifications in Building and Construction, Individual Support, and Ageing Support. This will allow students in Northern Luzon to earn Australian-accredited training while staying in the Philippines, helping them gain global skills and better employment opportunities.

They also explained that the partnership will follow a phased approach. This will help develop a strong pool of local trainers who can deliver international-standard programs, supporting long-term growth, improving workforce skills, and creating more opportunities for communities in the region.

BSU looks forward to continuing the conversation with Alana Kaye College and strengthening this promising partnership. The university remains committed to building meaningful global connections that support quality education, improve local opportunities, and contribute to the sustainable development of the Cordillera region.

November 14, 2025A total of 121 research presentations is continuously being conducted in four parallel sessions across the themes of food, environment, and culture. This reflects the diverse scholarly engagement in both competing (72 papers), noncompeting (33 papers), and poster (16 papers) categories. This breadth of participation underscores the ICFEC’s commitment to fostering global conversations and cooperation in science, technology, innovation, and culture, all essential to building sustainable communities.

The researches on food, environment, and culture are vital for bridging the persistent gaps between agricultural science, policy, and practice, as these fields collectively address the complexity of achieving sustainability, food security, and improved nutrition in diverse contexts. By generating localized insights and evidence-based solutions, these studies pave the way for policies and innovations that are not only scientifically robust but also context-sensitive and feasible for real-world application. Ultimately, empowering communities and stakeholders to advance resilient and equitable food- systems.

November 8, 2025On November 7, 2025, Benguet State University accompanied delegates from the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigsburg (Evangelische Hochschule Ludwigsburg), Germany, on a visit to Ifugao State University. The visit aimed to explore future partnerships in academic collaboration, indigenous education, and cultural heritage preservation.

The day began with a courtesy meeting at the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, where Dr. Jennifer Madonna G. Dait, IFSU Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the delegation. The discussion focused on possible collaborations in indigenous and community-based education, gender-responsive teaching, and research exchange among the universities.

A meeting followed at the IFSU Boardroom, attended by faculty, researchers, and staff from the three institutions. The dialogue emphasized the value of integrating indigenous knowledge into higher education and identified opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, joint training, and collaborative research on sustainability and inclusivity.

In the afternoon, the BSU and EHL delegates, together with IFSU’s International Affairs and Linkages Office, visited the Ifugao Indigenous Peoples Education Center and the Community Heritage Galleries. They were welcomed by Mr. Marlon M. Martin, Chief Operations Officer of the Save the Ifugao Terraces Movement and founder of the IPED Center.

November 8, 2025On November 7, 2025, Benguet State University welcomed delegates from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University for a courtesy visit at the International Relations Office. The group was composed of four international affairs coordinators and ten inbound students from Indonesia and Thailand under the SEAMEO SEA Teacher Batch 11 Program.

The visit aimed to give the students a deeper understanding of BSU’s internationalization initiatives and cultural engagements.After meeting with Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, BSU IRO Director, the guests went on a short campus tour guided by staff from the University Public Affairs Office and the International Relations Office.

During their tour, the delegates visited the Benguet State University Library & Information Services, where they were welcomed by Lauren P. Kipaan, Library Director. They also explored the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center with Schereid Joi N. Ugnasi of CRAC, the Food Science Research and Innovation Center with Caster Troy B. November 7, 2025On November 6, 2025, the delegates from the University of Guam, guided by Dr. Gigy G. Banes, Ms. Karryl Mae C. Ngina, and Mr. Jon Nicole Gutierrez from the College of Social Sciences, Mr. Jiban M. Caligtan from the Institute of Social Research and Development, and Mr. Roldan G. Day-ong from the International Relations Office, participated in a cultural immersion and educational tour around Benguet and Baguio City.

The tour also aimed to deepen the group’s understanding of Cordilleran culture and heritage, providing valuable context to their collaborative research and documentation on Indigenous healing practices between Benguet State University and the University of Guam.

The day began with a Courtesy Call at La Trinidad Mayor’s Office, where the delegation discussed the objectives of the visit and explored potential areas for future partnership and cultural collaboration. The visitors then enjoyed a hands-on experience at the Strawberry Farm, where they learned about local farming practices and participated in strawberry picking, one of Benguet’s well-known attractions.

The group then visited the Igorot Stone Kingdom, where they immersed themselves in Igorot heritage, learning from the stories, artistry, and symbolism embodied in the stone structures and cultural displays crafted by local artists. Their journey continued to Tam-awan Village, where they explored traditional Kalinga and Ifugao huts, giving them a glimpse of the Cordillera’s diverse Indigenous architecture and way of life.

The group then visited the University of the Philippines Baguio, where they toured the Cordillera Studies Center to learn about its publications on the Cordillera region. They also visited the Museo Kordilyera, viewing curated exhibits that feature artifacts and cultural objects representing the Indigenous peoples of Northern Luzon.

The tour concluded with a networking dinner at La Faayette, joined by IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, IRO Staff Ms. Racquel M. Fatog and Mr. Jeric Raye T. Bayating, and ISRD Staff Ms. Kacy O. Labon. The dinner served as a reflective and collaborative session where participants exchanged insights, strengthened connections, and discussed ways forward for continuing partnership and future projects on academics, Indigenous knowledge, culture, and healing practices.

This cultural immersion forms part of the continuing partnership between Benguet State University and the University of Guam, further strengthening academic collaboration and promoting mutual appreciation of Indigenous knowledge, healing practices, and heritage preservation.

November 6, 2025Benguet State University hosted an International Seminar on Forest Resources Management and Assessment on November 6, 2025, at the Everlasting Hall, New Research and Extension Building.

The activity was organized by the College of Forestry, the Center of Geoinformatics, together with BSU’s academic partner, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Japan.

Students from the College of Forestry- BSU and the College of Natural Sciences – Benguet State University, along with faculty, staff, and community members, attended the event. The program started with a prayer, the national anthem, and the BSU Hymn.

Dr. Nova D. Doyog, Dean of the College of Forestry, gave the opening remarks, recalling how the partnership started and sharing her hopes that everyone would learn from the speakers. University President Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan followed with a message of appreciation to the guests and reminded everyone to use what we will learn and of the need to take care of our forests, as he shared, “While our forests are not only a source of livelihood and ecological balance, to us, it is part of survival. Every day, everything is changing, the environment is changing, and we are confronted with challenges, and to these challenges, resolution should be put in place to ensure that these forests will be here today, tomorrow, and the years to come.”

The first speaker was Dr. Peter Surovy, a Research Associate at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, who is also a professor at the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague. His discussion focused on remote sensing tools and the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in assessing forest resources. The second speaker was Dr. Patrick Asante, a Research Associate at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics and a Senior Researcher at the Ministry of Forests, British Columbia, Canada. His discussion gave a glimpse of Forest Economics and the Valuation of Forest Resources. The third speaker was Dr. Atsushi Yoshimoto, a Professor at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. He shared about the Japanese forest as he discussed an introduction to forest management.

An open forum allowed participants to share ideas and questions, followed by the closing remarks of Dr. Josel M. Florentin, Vice President for Business Affairs. November 5, 2025The Benguet State University warmly welcomed the delegates from the University of Guam for a day filled with learning, cultural sharing, and meaningful connections.

Since 2018, BSU, through the College of Social Sciences and Institute of Social Research and Development, together with the Gender and Development Office and International Relations Office, has partnered with the University of Guam to collaborate on issues related to Indigenous health, gender, history, and culture.

As part of this ongoing partnership, three important programs were held: the Book Launching, the Forum, and the Cultural Exchange.

The first part of the day was the Book Launching of “Healing Practices of the Igorots in the Cordillera and the CHamorus in the Mariana Islands,” which is a collaborative publication between BSU and UOG, celebrating the enduring wisdom and healing traditions of two Indigenous communities.

The event began with indigenous prayers from both the CHamoru and Cordillera traditions, followed by the national anthems of the Philippines and Guam.

To officially start the event, Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, VP for Research and Extension, gave the opening message and warmly welcomed everyone. Then, Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan, BSU President, gave a special message highlighting the importance of the documentation of traditional and indigenous practices.

Dr. Lisa Linda S. Natividad from the University of Guam shared how the book came to be, followed by excerpts read by the authors: Lisa Linda S. Natividad, Isabella K. Olalia, Julia Faye L. Muñoz, Kacy O. Labon, Jiban M. Caligtan, Gigy G. Banes, Ruth S. Batani, and Karryl Mae C. Ngina.

Reflections and responses were then shared by Dr. Ryan C. Guinaran, Maribeth B. Biano, and Paul Joseph A. Nuval, the reviewers of the book, who expressed their appreciation for the publication of the book. Dr. Gigy G. Banes read the acknowledgments, and Dr. Rex John G. Bawang closed the program by sharing his own experience in Indigenous healing and the importance of preserving and continuing these practices.

The second part of the event was the Forum on “CHamorus in the Mariana Islands: History, Indigenous Healing Practices, and Linkages with the Igorot in the Cordilleras,” hosted by the Benguet State University’s College of Social Sciences, Master of Arts in Social Studies Student Association, Institute of Social Research and Development, International Relations Office, and Office of Extension Services. The forum aimed to deepen intercultural understanding by exploring the history, traditions, and healing practices of the CHamoru people and their cultural ties with the Igorot communities of the Cordilleras.

Dr. Rex John G. Bawang opened the forum, followed by a message from Dr. Anita Rodriguez, President of the University of Guam, who emphasized the value of collaboration and shared heritage. Speakers included Dr. Caryle Corbin, who talked about the evolution of governance in Guam and the Philippines; Ms. Isabella Katharina Olalia, who gave a comparative analysis of CHamoru and Cordilleran traditions; Mr. Atdao Mami Natividad, who discussed spirituality and environmental connection; and Ms. Julia Faye Muñoz, who shared about CHamoru healing customs and values.

The discussion revealed many similarities between the two cultures, showing the deep kinship and solidarity that lead to more continued collaboration.

An interactive question-and-answer session followed, allowing participants to share reflections and insights.

To close, Dr. Kristine Baniqued-Dela Cruz of the College of Social Sciences congratulated everyone and left three inspiring reminders:

Help in documenting and protecting our cultural and historical heritage.

Pass these traditions on to the younger generations through sharing and education.

Students from the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, led by Dr. Florida S. Rosario, also provided their services during the event by assisting and serving the attendees. Their involvement reflected BSU’s strong commitment to its internationalization initiatives. This activity supports the goals of the International Relations Office, particularly under Program 2: Internationalization of Academic Engagements, Program 4: Promotion of Multinational Atmosphere in the University, and Program 5: Services and Support System for Internationalization.

In the afternoon, the day concluded with a lively Cultural Exchange between the University of Guam visitors, BSU students from the College of Social Sciences, College of Numeracy and Applied Sciences-Benguet State University, and BSU Kontad, celebrating unity, friendship, and the shared spirit of Indigenous identity and healing.

October 30, 2025In celebration of the United Nations Day, Benguet State University kicked off the program with a colorful Parade of Flags on October 30, 2025. The event was organized by the BSU SSG La Trinidad Campus in coordination with the International Relations Office as part of the University’s ongoing efforts to promote unity, peace, and global understanding.

Students, faculty, staff, and international students joined the parade, proudly carrying the flags of different nations. The campus came alive with color and spirit as each college showcased its assigned flag, symbolizing diversity, friendship, and shared purpose.

This celebration also marked the culmination of BSU’s International Month celebration, held under the theme “Rooted locally: impacting globally: A better BSU for a better world.”

Right after the colorful parade, the excitement continued with BSU Pasikatan 2025, where each college took the stage to showcase performances inspired by their assigned countries. Through music, dance, and creative expression, students highlighted the beauty of different cultures while showing their own talents and teamwork.

The celebration continued with the Mr. and Ms. United Nations 2025! Each college sent its own representatives, proudly wearing attire inspired by different countries. They faced meaningful questions about the UN theme, the Sustainable Development Goals, and current global and local issues, and they answered with heart, confidence, and purpose. Every word they spoke carried a message of awareness, hope, and action.

In the afternoon, a variety show was held, organized by the Center for Culture and the Arts in partnership with the Supreme Student Government. The performers included members of various BSU performing clubs as well as other talented students from different colleges.

Truly, the BSU United Nations Day 2025 was more than just an event, it was a celebration of diversity, unity, and global connection, showing that BSU continues to be rooted locally while making an impact globally.

October 29, 2025The Benguet State University Buguias Campus proudly celebrated Indigenous Month and United Nations Day with the theme “Unified Diversity: Celebrating Indigenous Peoples.”

The celebration started on the evening of October 28, 2025, with the exciting Search for Mr. and Ms. United Nations 2025, organized by the Historians’ Club of BSU-BC. Ten amazing candidates from six departments represented different countries, showing their culture, talents, and advocacies about unity and respect for diversity. In the end, Gary Jr. D. Martin, who represented Venezuela, and Hazel N. Mangeg, who represented Thailand, were crowned Mr. and Miss United Nations Organization 2025, reflecting the event’s true message of unity amid diversity.

he pageant not only highlights beauty and confidence but also promotes the importance of valuing and respecting cultural differences.

The event was also joined by the staff of the International Relations Office, Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw, IRO Deputy Director, and international students Soma Yauchi and Yuki Takahashi from Japan, who enjoyed witnessing the colorful pageant.

The celebration continued the next morning, October 29, 2025, with a lively Parade of Flags. Students, teachers, staff, community leaders, and guests proudly walked together carrying the flags of different nations, sharing smiles, colors, and friendship.After the parade, a short program followed at the gymnasium. Dr. Leila P. Buloguey, Social Studies Organization Adviser and IRO Coordinator, gave the welcome remarks, expressing gratitude to everyone who joined the meaningful celebration of cultures, identities, and the enduring strength of humanity. She also shared a heartfelt message, saying, “May this event inspire us to stand as proud representatives of our nation and as compassionate citizens of the world.”

The program also featured an inspirational message from Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw, Deputy Director of the BSU International Relations Office. In her speech, she encouraged everyone, students, faculty, and administrators alike, to carry the spirit of unity beyond the event. She reminded the audience to let this spirit guide how they teach, learn, and live, and to become leaders who see diversity not as a challenge to manage, but as a gift to celebrate and protect.

The celebration served as a reminder of the university’s continued commitment to promoting cultural understanding, global awareness, and unity in diversity among its students and the community.

October 25, 2025To continue its efforts in promoting sustainability, Benguet State University International Relations Office held a session for the Sustainability Literacy Program on October 25, 2025, during the Community Leaders Formation Program with the theme “From Global Goals to Local Impact: Understanding and Applying the SDGs.”

During the activity, participants learned more about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shared how these are being practiced in their own communities.

Prof. Sarrah Ben Abdennebi from the University of Huelva, Spain, talked about mental health and intervention strategies related to #SDG3 Good Health and Well-being. Ms. Janice P. Balangen, Department Chair of Environmental Sciences at BSU, discussed climate change and its connection to #SDG13 Climate Action. Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, IRO Director, encouraged participants to apply the SDGs in their daily lives with a call to take action for a more sustainable future.

To end the session, participants signed the Sustainability Pledge Wall as a symbol of their support and promise to promote sustainability in their communities.

The Sustainability Literacy Program was first launched on October 21, 2024, during the BSU International Week celebration. The program was created to promote sustainability education, strengthen regional development, and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research, and community involvement.

October 24, 2025The Department of Entrepreneurship of the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, in collaboration with the Gender and Development Office, successfully held the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2025 celebration from October 18 to 24, 2025. The week-long event aimed to empower university employees and students by imparting knowledge and skills to foster entrepreneurial mindsets.

Global Entrepreneurship Week is an annual international celebration held every October, serving as a platform for the university to take part in promoting innovation and enterprise. Recognizing the value of creating opportunities beyond the classroom, the college strives to strengthen students’ entrepreneurial skills, preparing them to become competitive contributors to the nation’s workforce. This is also a platform where successful entrepreneurs share their experiences, which equips participants with valuable knowledge and skills for economic and social development.

The celebration opened on October 18 with the Opening Program and Department Acquaintance Party, held at Gestand Centrum, Baguio City. The event gathered CHET students, faculty, and staff to officially mark the start of a week filled with learning and innovation.

On October 21, students proudly launched their Product Exhibit at the Strawberry Hall, showcasing the innovative products of the BS Entrep students specialized in Food Enterprise and students specialized in Apparel and Fashion Enterprise. The day also featured the much-awaited “Entrep Got Talent,” where students displayed their unique skills and creativity.

The following day, October 22, featured two major activities: Business Pitching and Entrep Talks. During the Business Pitching, student was given the floor to present their innovative business ideas to their audience. Meanwhile, the Entrep Talks brought together local entrepreneurs who shared their actual experiences, challenges, and victories during their entrepreneurial journey and encouraged students to pursue their ventures with passion and purpose.

On October 23, participants showcased their culinary skills during the Culinary Challenge, which highlighted their display of skills of the BS Entrep specialized in Food Enterprise students, wherein the students were challenged to prepare dishes from the Cordillera. This was followed by an insightful Intellectual Property Rights Seminar, which provided valuable knowledge on copyright and protecting ideas, innovations, and business creations.

The week-long celebration concluded on October 24 with Project Runway and the Closing Program, where BS Entrep, specializing in Apparel and Fashion Enterprise, displayed their skills and presented their creativity through their avant-garde designs. The event wrapped up with recognitions and words of encouragement, celebrating a successful and inspiring week of activities.

This event supports the Youth Entrepreneurship Act by inspiring students to become future business leaders and innovators. It also reflects BSU’s BSU CARES mantra and contributes to #SDG4QualityEducation and #SDG8decentworkandeconomicgrowth through the promotion of entrepreneurial learning and sustainable livelihoods.

As part of the celebration of BSU International Month 2025 and in preparation for the upcoming World University Ranking for Innovation submission this December, Benguet State University held a WURI Writeshop on October 22, 2025, at the Everlasting Hall, Research and Extension Building. The activity was organized in coordination with the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension – BSU through Ms. Matyline A. Camfili-Talastas, IRO Coordinator for the Research and Extension sector.

The event gathered IRO Coordinators and Research and Extension representatives from the different centers to strengthen BSU’s preparations and refine their entries for the international ranking.

Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, IRO Director, opened the program with a warm welcome and an overview of the activity’s purpose. He expressed appreciation for the participants’ presence and highlighted the importance of the Writeshop activity.

The first part of the event was a storytelling session featuring the centers and offices behind BSU’s success in the recent World University Ranking for Innovation.

Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension, joined the session via Zoom and emphasized the importance of participating in international rankings as a SUC Level IV university. He also shared the story and best practices of the Center of Geoinformatics, which gave BSU a Rank of 5 under the Infrastructure and Technology Category.

Dr. Jeftee Ben B. Pinos-an, representative from the University Business Affairs Office, and Ms. Schreid Ugnasi, representative from the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, also shared their journey and efforts, which gave BSU Rank 11 in the Funding for Sustainability Category and Rank 17 in the Entrepreneurial Spirit Category.

Next, Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw, IRO Deputy Director, presented the updated categories for the WURI Ranking and guided the participants in identifying which areas they would focus on for their entries.

In the afternoon, participants worked on drafting and refining their write-ups for their chosen categories. Each IRO Coordinator and R & E representative then presented their outputs for review and feedback. Ms. Allasiw and Mr. Bawang, together with fellow participants, shared helpful insights and suggestions to further improve the write-ups.

Closing the activity, Atty. Andres Arnold W. Lampacan thanked and congratulated everyone for their active participation. He emphasized the importance of the activity and in joining the rankings, saying, “With us being ranked in this WURI, we can announce to the world that our graduates are products of a university recognized under these categories.”

As part of the celebration of BSU International Month 2025, a Cascade Session on Digital Literacy, AI, and Critical Thought was held on October 21, 2025, via Zoom. The activity was organized in coordination with the BSU-College of Arts and Humanities through Dr. Kara S. Panolong, CAH-DOE Faculty member and grantee of the U.S. Embassy RELO Training.

Through the session, participants, who are from the community and various schools across the Philippines gained valuable insights on how to effectively and responsibly use different AI tools and digital resources in teaching, enhance lesson preparation and classroom engagement, and strengthen their digital literacy, critical thinking, and ethical use of technology.

Another highlight of the celebration was the Film Viewing, which was held at the IRO Function Hall in the afternoon of the same day in coordination with Mr. Arnel Bassit, IRO Coordinator from the College of Social Sciences.

The participants of the event watched the International (2009), a thriller movie about an Interpol agent and a New York prosecutor who work together to uncover the crimes of a powerful fictional bank involved in arms dealing, money laundering, and conspiracy. After the movie, a reflection session followed where students shared their thoughts, lessons learned, and insights about the movie and how it can be applied in their classes and everyday lives.

These activities are part of BSU’s ongoing efforts to promote learning, awareness, and global connection through the International Month 2025 celebration.

October 17, 2025The Benguet State University has again proved its dedication to agricultural innovation in the international arena, as two of its representatives, Dr. Janet P. Pablo and Ms. Frevy T. Orencia, attended a Training-Workshop on the Development of Low-Cost Smartphone Application with Deep Learning Models and the Tsukuba Conference 2025, which was held at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, between September 29 and October 3, 2025. Dr. Pablo and Ms. Orencia are key members of the BSU research project: “Precision Agriculture to enhance the productivity and economic profitability of Cabbage and Potato in Benguet,” which is funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council of Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).

The training workshop was a week-long event, which took place at the Bioproduction and Machinery Laboratory, University of Tsukuba, led by Dr. Tofael Ahamed. The training was aimed at creating low-cost smartphone-based solutions to monitor plant health through the use of canopy imaging and a deep learning-based solution. This initiative supports Benguet State University’s (BSU) ongoing project to develop a user-friendly mobile application that will help local cabbage and potato farmers assess crop nutrient requirements and optimize fertilizer application. The workshop covered key topics such as image preprocessing, deep learning fundamentals, mobile development, and website development. The participants were able to integrate the deep learning model in the mobile application and website, completing the prototype for the project’s nitrogen (N)-application advisory tool.

In addition to the week-long training, Dr. Pablo and Ms. Orencia also had the opportunity to participate in the 2025 Tsukuba Conference. The conference was in its fourth edition since its launch in 2019 and brings together scientists, innovators, and emerging leaders from around the world to exchange ideas and explore cutting-edge research. With this year’s theme “Going into New Frontiers with Society,” the conference was focused on key areas such as space exploration, deep-sea research, brain science, nuclear fusion, and hydrogen energy. It also highlighted pressing issues and potential innovations relevant to the Global South, fostering collaboration toward sustainable and inclusive development. Among the plenary sessions attended by the BSU delegates were the Opening and Future Shapers Sessions, which gathered emerging scientists and leaders from various countries to discuss how emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data science can serve human needs rather than replace them. The project participants presented in the special session on “AI and IoT to Integrate Automation in Farm Management: A Path to Sustainable Agriculture,” organized by Dr. Tofael. The BSU participants were able to engage with international experts from Malaysia, Taiwan, and Belgium who shared their research on digital tools for efficient farm management. These discussions are closely aligned with the BSU Precision Agriculture Project’s vision of using accessible technology to help Benguet farmers make informed fertilizer decisions and improve yield quality.

The visit concluded with a benchmarking activity at the Tsukuba Plant Innovation Research Center and other research facilities that showcased Japan’s advancements in agricultural engineering, sustainable farming, and precision crop management.

Impact on Sustainable Development Goals

The project’s focus on using technology to optimize fertilizer use and improve crop yields directly contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals:

As part of the celebration of the BSU International Month 2025 and World Food Day, a Fruit Tree Rearing Activity was held on October 17, 2025, behind the BSU Administration Building near the Balili River.

The activity gathered the International Relations Office staff, two international students from Japan, IRO coordinators, GSO staff, and volunteers from the College of Natural Sciences – Bios Logo Society.

In coordination with the College of Forestry- BSU IRO Coordinator, Mr. Bernard Peter O. Daipan, the group planted a total of 30 fruit trees, consisting of Bayabas (Guava), Duhat (Java Plum), Guyabano (Soursop), and Langka (Langka). After planting, the group will also be returning regularly to care for the trees as they grow.

The activity aimed to promote environmental awareness, sustainability, and involvement by ensuring that planted trees are properly maintained and continue to thrive. It also served as a reminder of the importance of taking care of the environment and supporting food security through tree planting and nurturing.

The Fruit Tree Rearing Activity is a simple but long-term activity, and this continues to strengthen BSU’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This also supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly #SDG2 (Zero Hunger), #SDG13 (Climate Action), and #SDG15 (Life on Land), as it encourages sustainable food sources and environmental protection.

October 16, 2025As part of the celebration of the BSU International Month 2025 and World Food Day, the Zero Waste Cooking Challenge was held on October 16, 2025, at RSDC Room 105. The event was coordinated by IRO Coordinator, Ma’am Florida S. Rosario, the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, and the International Relations Office.

The activity aimed to promote sustainable cooking and to teach the BSU community about reducing food waste. Participants were asked to prepare a main dish and a dessert using ingredients such as vegetable peels, overripe fruits, leftover cooked food, and other items that are usually thrown away.

The judges were Ms. Janice P. Balangen, Mr. Arsenio G. Diego, and Atty. Andres Arnold W. Lampacan, who rated each dish based on Creativity and Innovation in the Use of “Waste” Ingredients, Taste and Overall Appeal, Presentation, and Alignment with the Principles of Zero Waste Cooking.

The winners of the challenge were also announced.

First Place went to Group 6, from the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, Adrian N. Palsiyeng and Reina Almira C. Kelly, with their Isla Tropicana Panna Cotta and Coconut-Crusted Tilapia Fillet.

Second Place was awarded to Group 3, from the College of Natural Sciences – Benguet State University, Nikhol Khaye D. Celestino and Roland E. Dalog, for their Banana Peel Burger, Banana Chips, and Saging Con Yelo.

Third Place went to Group 2, from the College of Veterinary Medicine – Benguet State University, Nathanael Sembrano and Jazmine Grace Packing, who prepared Banana Peel Chocolate Brownies and Zero-Waste Pan-Seared Chicken Breast.

Other groups also impressed the judges with their amazing dishes.

Group 1, Sarah Cadongonan and Alexander Saga, made Banana Peel Party with Garlic and Onion Peel and Carrot Peel Pancake.

Group 4, Chloe Iona S. Sabala and Anjelica Marie A. Versoza, presented Saba Peel Sisig and Saba Leche Flan.

Group 5, Andy F. Tan and Gabriel M. Talusig, cooked Cabbage Roll and Banana Peel Caramel Sundae.

Group 7, Ivanric L. Cayat and Christian Joe D. Valsez, prepared Sous Vide Wat Wat and Dokto Pie.

The event encouraged everyone to cook wisely, avoid waste, and help protect the environment. This supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly #SDG2 (Zero Hunger), #SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and #SDG13 (Climate Action), by promoting sustainable cooking, food security, and the reduction of food waste.

The Zero Waste Cooking Challenge, supports BSU’s goal to promote sustainability and environmental awareness among students. With the success of this year’s activity, it was shared that there will be another Zero Waste Cooking Challenge next year, with even more exciting improvements and opportunities for BSU students to showcase their creativity in sustainable cooking.

October 14, 2025October 14, 2025The Benguet State University – International Relations Office warmly welcomed Dr. Eing Ming Wu, Ph.D., Visiting Professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman, National College of Public Administration and Governance, with his wife, Prof. Mei Lu, and accompanied by Ms. Alecsandria Galabayo of Edu-Connect Southeast Asia Association, and Ms. Myla Panisoc, Coordinator from Mountain Province.

The group visited the Office of the University President and the International Relations Office, where they met with President Kenneth Alip Laruan and IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang as part of their program, “Bridging Mountains and Islands: Austronesian Linkages and Human Capital Exploration in the Cordilleras”, under the Bayanihan & Taiwanihan: Philippines and Taiwan University Initiative & Collaboration.

From October 13–20, 2025, Dr. Wu and his team will journey through the Cordillera Administrative Region, engaging with leaders, scholars, and communities in a week-long exploration of shared heritage, culture, and human capital development.

The Benguet State University International Relations Office successfully held the Education Fair on October 13, 2025, at the University Gymnasium. The event gathered more than 500 students, teachers, and community members who came to explore different opportunities for learning and academic growth.

The program was warmly welcomed with the message of Dr. Janet P. Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs. She welcomed everyone as she mentioned the importance of internationalization and shared the theme for the International Month, “Rooted Locally, Impacting Globally: A Better BSU for a Better World.”

Atty. Maridel P. Langbis shared the message of University President Dr. Kenneth A. Laruan, who thanked everyone for being part of the Education Fair. He also wished that the event would lead to new partnerships, more global opportunities, and a stronger commitment to make education truly meaningful.

The program was officially opened in a fun way as Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, IRO Director, together with Dr. Janet P. Pablo and Atty. Maridel P. Langbis opened a mystery box at the venue. Inside was a balloon that went up and pulled the words “EDUCATION FAIR”, marking the start of the event.

Many exciting booths joined this year’s fair.

The BSU Alumni Association showcased the Alumni Jackets and updated the alumni profiling system for graduates who visited the booth.

The PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services offered consultations and shared opportunities for paid internships abroad in the fields of agriculture, engineering, hospitality, and marketing in countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.

The Baguio Travel Services (BTS) also participated, offering help with ticketing, hotel booking, VISA applications, and travel arrangements. They also shared internship opportunities in other countries.

The IDP IELTS provided counseling services and information about the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), one of the most recognized English tests for work and study abroad.

Along with IDP, a representative from James Cook University in Australia also shared information about their programs and the opportunities for students who want to study at their university.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology Cordillera also set up a booth to promote their digital services. They promoted the E-Gov Application, a single operating system that unifies all government services in one app. They also offered ICT Literacy Services, where students can enroll for capacity-building programs. In addition, they promoted Free Wi-Fi for All, and then they also offered registration for a Digital Certificate for the Philippine National Public Key Infrastructure, which helps ensure safer and more secure online transactions and documents.

The Education Fair became a place for learning, connection, and inspiration.

The event also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals)

October 10, 2025This Information session on Japanese Language and Culture is one of the featured events of the International Month Celebration this October 2025. The session was held on October 10, onsite at the IRO Function Hall, with more than 60 participants, and was also streamed live via Zoom and Facebook for wider participation.

This session, in coordination with Ms. Reslyn G. Capuyan, IRO Coordinator of the College of Arts and Humanities, aimed to engage participants in learning more about Japan’s unique language and cultural traditions. The event featured international students from Tottori University, Japan, who shared their insights and experiences with the audience.

Ms. Yuki Takahashi presented about traditional Japanese clothing and attire, while Soma discussed common Japanese behaviors and greetings, popular Japanese food, and traditional tales. Around 60 participants joined onsite, with more tuning in online via Zoom and Facebook Live. The event provided an opportunity for an engaging discussion as students also shared their thoughts and expressed their interest in learning more about Japan. This also helped participants gain a deeper appreciation of Japan’s rich culture and everyday customs.

The session concluded with an open question-and-answer segment, where both onsite and online participants actively engaged with the speakers. The audience showed great enthusiasm and curiosity, making the event both informative and enjoyable.Through this activity, the university reaffirms its commitment to promoting global diversity and fostering cross-cultural understanding within the BSU community. By providing opportunities like these, BSU continues to promote awareness and appreciation of different cultures, strengthening its role as a globally engaged university.

October 7, 2025The Department of Foreign Affairs invites Filipino inventors, innovators, researchers, and institutions to join the 16th International Invention Fair in the Middle East (IIFME) happening on 08–11 February 2026 in Kuwait.

Organized by the Kuwait Science Club in partnership with the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, the Fair brings together inventors and investors from around the world to showcase groundbreaking ideas in Mechanics, Computer Sciences, Agriculture, Environmental Protection, and more.

Please note that a fee of at least USD 800 (approximately PhP 45,658) to USD 1,250 (approximately PhP 71,341) is required to cover participation, depending on the package and date of registration. Interested participants may submit their inventions online through a 5-minute video presentation. Meanwhile, the basic package for attending exhibitors includes:

Visa issuance;

Brief description of the invention in English and Arabic languages;
