Abubakar in Her Prime in Muay Thai, Gives Pride to BSU


CHK student Rudzma S. Abubakar, a 23-year-old student at Benguet State University (BSU), is making momentous waves in the world of Muay Thai. Abubakar is in her third year of pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science (BSESS), majoring in Fitness and Sports Management under the College of Human Kinetics at BSU. Her remarkable achievements in Muay Thai, both locally and globally, have brought immense pride to her university and country.

This year, Abubakar secured a Silver medal in the Senior Female Mai Muay Category and placed 5th in the Senior Female Elite – 48 kg category at the IFMA Senior World Championship held in Greece from May 31 to June 10. Her journey in Muay Thai has been marked by notable successes, reflecting her dedication, skill, and passion for the sport.

Abubakar’s rise in Muay Thai began with her international debut in December 2021, where she won a bronze medal at the Muay Thai World Championships & Festival in Thailand, competing against 951 athletes. In September 2022, she further showcased her prowess by winning two bronze medals at the FISU World University Cup Combat Sports in Samsun, Turkey, and the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Continuing her streak of success, she earned a Silver medal at the World Combat Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and placed 5th at the Muay Thai World Championship in 2023.

Abubakar’s achievements are a testament to her hard work and the excellent guidance of her coach, Mr. Edzel Ngina. A distinguished alumnus of BSU, Mr. Ngina holds a Diploma in Physical Education (DPE) and a Master of Science in Physical Education (MSPE) from the College of Human Kinetics. He began coaching Abubakar in 2021, and together, they have made significant strides in the sport, bringing honor to BSU and the Philippines.

Abubakar’s success story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes. Her commitment to her studies and sport exemplifies the values of perseverance and excellence that BSU instills in its students.
