February 4, 2025On February 4, 2025, representatives from Fulbright Philippines met with BSU VPAA Janet P. Pablo and IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang, who represented President Kenneth Laruan during a courtesy call. Joining the meeting was BSU faculty member Sherlyn Tipayno, a Fulbright scholar at Purdue University.

The Fulbright delegation included Finance and Admin Manager Redentor De Silva, Education USA Adviser Rochell Miguel, and Program Officer Milagros Tan. They introduced various Fulbright scholarship programs and explored avenues for future collaborations with BSU to strengthen academic and cultural exchanges.

February 3, 2025International Wetlands Day is celebrated every February 2nd to remember the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. This day helps raise awareness about the importance of wetlands in our environment. Wetlands provide homes for wildlife, clean water, help control floods, and help in fighting climate change.

The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, is a Ramsar site, an ecological and cultural area. The marsh acts as a natural flood buffer, absorbing excess rainwater and supporting diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, endangered Philippine crocodile, and various fish species. It also helps sustain Indigenous Manobo communities living in floating houses. However, threats like deforestation, pollution, and climate change endanger its ecosystem.

Taking immediate action will help safeguard this sanctuary and ensure its protection for future generations.

January 23, 2025On January 23, 2025, Mr. Kimio Takarada, President of Takara Inc., visited Benguet State University to explore its strawberry production system. His visit began with a courtesy call to President Kenneth A. Laruan, joined by IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang and ATBI Director Ruth C. Diego.

After the introductory meeting, Mr. Takarada proceeded to meet Vice President for Research and Extension Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres. During their discussion, they explored potential areas for collaboration between Takara Inc. and BSU. Mr. Takarada also shared that he discovered BSU through Dr. Marlowe Aquino of Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), where they are collaborating on garlic processing, particularly in producing black garlic.

Later, Mr. Takarada met with FSRIC Director Lesley Dale Umayat, where they discussed their shared interest in food processing and production, comparing methods used in Japan and the Philippines. The visit continued with a tour led by ATBI Director Ruth C. Diego, who showcased the university’s Incubation Center and ATBI Demo Farms. Dr. Diego highlighted how the university supports its incubatees in producing and marketing strawberries and strawberry-based products.

January 15, 2025On January 14, 2025, BSU – International Relations Office interns from the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) and Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) participated in a session with Ms. Erika Martinez Gonzalez from the University of Huelva, Spain. The session focused on the university’s digital systems that simplify academic and administrative processes.

Ms. Gonzalez introduced tools for student engagement, including virtual classrooms, administrative platforms, and a digital certificate system with secure login features. These systems allow students to manage schedules, access grades, submit requests, and upload documents online. A virtual assistant addresses common inquiries, further streamlining processes.

She also highlighted the University of Huelva library’s digital and physical resources, which are accessible remotely via VPNs. These include digitized books, journals, and research databases, ensuring students can use academic materials off-campus.

The discussion included internship opportunities, job postings in IT and engineering, and flexible master’s programs that align with students’ career goals. Participants compared grading systems and academic practices between the Philippines and Spain and shared experiences with tools like Google Classroom and Microsoft 365.

The session concluded with an overview of the university’s centralized digital platform, its efforts to improve online systems for both students and staff, and emphasized the importance of digital tools in enhancing student engagement and overall academic experience.

January 13, 2025Benguet State University (BSU) welcomed Erika Martinez Gonzales, a staff member from the University of Huelva, Spain’s Faculty of Nursing, for a week-long Staff Mobility Program held from January 13–17, 2024. She was formally introduced to the BSU community by International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang during the flag-raising ceremony.

Her visit began with a courtesy call with BSU officials: BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, Vice President for Academic Affairs Janet Pablo, Vice President for Research and Extension Roscinto Ian Lumbres, Vice President for University Business Affairs Josel Florentin, and the receiving college representatives: College of Nursing Dean Mark U. Gay-as, College Secretary Jonalyn Esco, and GAD Director Jude L. Tayaben.

Following the courtesy call, Ms. Gonzales toured BSU’s La Trinidad Campus, starting with the Centennial Park for a glimpse into the university’s history. She also visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) where Research Assistant Leo Kimbungan introduced her to BSU’s bee research and honey production initiatives.

The tour continued at the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where Von Amado shared insights into BSU’s coffee production practices, including the innovative “coffee under pine” farming system. The tour concluded at the Benguet Museum, where Provincial Tourism Officer Kenneth Kelcho provided an overview of Benguet’s rich cultural history.

January 10, 2025Benguet State University (BSU) started the year by welcoming delegates from the Pacific Islands with a cultural dinner organized by the International Relations Office (IRO). The event highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera, showcased through performances by the BSU KONTAD Cultural Group, which presented various traditional dances from the region.

In his welcome remarks, IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang provided a brief introduction to Cordilleran culture. Atty. Maridel P. Langbis, representing BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, extended a warm welcome to the guests, emphasizing the shared values of indigenous culture among Pacific Islanders and Cordillerans. On behalf of the University of Guam (UoG), Lisa Linda Natividad underscored the enduring partnership between BSU and UoG, highlighting almost six years of collaboration that continue to expand, now involving other Pacific Island partners.

As part of the program, the delegates presented a gift to BSU, which was handed over by Hema Wi Hongi from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and received by Atty. Langbis. The evening concluded with a community dance performed by KONTAD, joined by the delegates, followed by a moving Māori chant by Hema. IRO Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude and anticipation for further collaborations.

The delegates represent various Pacific Islands and will participate in a research symposium on January 9, 2025, at the Carnation Hall, Research and Extension Building.

December 18, 2024Strengthening its extension programs, the International Relations Office (IRO) formalized a partnership with the Kabayan Local Government Unit (LGU) through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed on December 18, 2024. The ceremonial signing, held at the BSU Office of the President, was graced by Kabayan Mayor Engr. Florante B. Bantales Jr. and Vice Mayor Mike E. Badival. Representing BSU were President Kenneth A. Laruan and IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang.

The signing was witnessed by members of the IRO team, including Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw and staff members Racquel M. Fatog, Glyrel B. Palberas, Ian Jones B. Backian, and Benigno C. Mangay-at.

During the event, President Laruan highlighted the importance of conducting a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) to identify capacity-building programs tailored to Kabayan’s development goals. These initiatives aim to advance local internationalization (IZN) efforts and empower communities through education and collaboration. In response, Kabayan officials invited the BSU team in their upcoming eco-tourism celebration and Bendiyan Festival in May 2025.

This MOA marks a milestone in IRO’s mission to localize internationalization by extending BSU’s global engagement initiatives beyond the campus and into Benguet municipalities. December 18, 2024Benguet State University (BSU) welcomed Prof. Atsushi Yushimoto from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM), Dr. Ken-Ichi Kamo from Sapporo Medical University, and Prof. Masashi Konoshima from the University of Ryukyus on December 17, 2024. During a courtesy call facilitated by CF Faculty Nova Doyog, the delegation was introduced to Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF) Allan C. Sacpa, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Samuel S. Poliden, and Vice President for Research and Extension (VPRE) Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres. The discussion focused on their itinerary and prospects for future collaboration.

In the afternoon, the Research and Extension (R&E) sector hosted an introductory meeting on exploring international organizations in support of BSU’s global goals. The visiting professors shared opportunities for BSU to join international organizations and introduced their academic journal, which BSU researchers could consider for publishing their studies.

The delegation also toured BSU’s research centers, including the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA) and the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC). Their visit will continue until December 19, 2024. […]
