Your Global Launchpad II – Unlocking International Opportunities for Students

“Your Global Launchpad II: Expanding International Opportunities for Students” was successfully conducted at the International Relations Office Building, engaging students from the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, Center for Culture and the Arts, and the College of Human Kinetics-Benguet.

The activity was organized in collaboration with the PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services Team, led by Ms. Joy Elisabeth P. Sudango. As the second installment of the Global Launchpad series, the session aimed to provide targeted international opportunities suited to the academic interests of Home Economics, Culture and Arts, and Human Kinetics students.

In the morning session, PTCP Career Explore engaged students from CHET and CCA. Ms. Emielyn S. Balagtas presented various study-abroad opportunities specifically aligned with CHET programs, highlighting partner destinations such as New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Spain, and Poland. This was followed by Ms. Irene M. Victore, who discussed international internship opportunities in countries including the United States, Thailand, and Switzerland, outlining program benefits and application requirements. The session also featured Ms. Elizabeth, who introduced a Study Tour Program to Bali, Indonesia, offering students short-term international exposure and cultural learning experiences.

In the afternoon session, students from the College of Human Kinetics were introduced to global opportunities tailored to their field. Mr. Matt Aldrie G. Salipeo discussed the opportunity to work as a camp counselor abroad, presenting possible placements in various international destinations. Meanwhile, Mr. Jason E. Angayen, Business Development Officer, shared opportunities to pursue studies at UCAM, Spain, including options for Master’s degrees and Diploma programs.

January 14, 2026As part of the 40th Charter Anniversary Celebration of Benguet State University, the information session titled “Your Global Launchpad I: Unlocking International Opportunities for Students” was held at the 3rd floor of the International Relations Office Building.

The activity was organized with IRO through the initiative of the PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services Team, led by Ms. Joy Elisabeth P. Sudango. This information session is part of a series that aims to reach students not only from the main campus but also from the Bokod and Buguias campuses, providing wider access to international opportunities.

The session began with a welcome message from Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office, who warmly welcomed the students from the Benguet State University-College of Agriculture. He emphasized the importance of listening and learning during the session, especially about opportunities for internship, study, and work abroad. He also introduced the role and services of the International Relations Office before formally introducing the guests from the PTCP Career Explore Team.

Dr. Bawang introduced the PTCP Career Explore Team members, namely Mr. Matt Aldrie G. Salipeo, Ms. Emielyn S. Balagtas, Ms. Irene M. Victore, and Ms. Joy Elisabeth P. Sudango, the Manager of PTCP Career Explore.

During the session, Mr. Matt Aldrie presented an overview of PTCP Career Explore, discussing the organization’s vision, mission, and the services they provide to help students access global opportunities. Ms. Irene then discussed the Paid Agricultural Internship Program, highlighting its benefits, requirements, and the support services provided by their office. Through this program, qualified students can apply for paid internships in countries such as Denmark, Switzerland, the United States, and Sweden.

Following this, Ms. Emielyn presented the Study–Work–Live Abroad Program, where she explained the benefits, requirements, and assistance offered to students who wish to study and work overseas. Opportunities are available with their partners which is in Canada, Germany, Finland, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, and other partner destinations.

The session also featured Mr. Jason E. Angayen, a Business Development Officer (Philippines) of Southern Cross University, Australia. He introduced the university, its academic offerings, and possible opportunities available to interested students, further expanding the international options presented during the activity.

January 14, 2026As part of the 40th Charter Anniversary Celebration of Benguet State University, the International Relations Office continued its Fruit Tree Rearing Activity, which began last year as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The activity was joined by former IRO Director Maria Luz D. Fang-asan, former IRO Coordinator from the College of Natural Sciences Louisa P. Pladio, and the PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services Team led by Ms. Joy Elisabeth P. Sudango (Joy Elisabeth). Their presence showed continued support for university’s environmental and sustainability efforts.

During the activity, the group cared and tended for the fruit trees planted last year to ensure their healthy growth. In addition, new bayabas (guava tree) and avocado trees were planted to further support food production and environmental protection. This Fruit Tree Rearing Activity was conducted at the same time as the fruit tree planting activity of the General Services Office, highlighting a shared effort across the university.

This activity emphasizes the importance of not only planting trees but also regularly caring for them so they can grow, bear fruit, and serve future generations. It encourages responsibility, patience, and long-term commitment to protecting the environment and supporting food security.

This activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly #SDG2ZeroHunger, #sdg13climateaction, and #SDG15LifeOnLand, by encouraging sustainable food sources, climate action, and the protection of natural resources.

January 8, 2026On January 7, 2026, representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency – Philippines Office once again visited Benguet State University. The visiting team was composed of Senior Program Officer Lara Javier and Japanese Volunteer Coordinator Shibasaki Eiji. This second visit was conducted in preparation for the arrival of the JICA Volunteer, who is expected to begin service at the University in February.

During their previous visit last year, the JICA representatives paid a courtesy call to BSU officials to discuss the planned volunteer engagement. For this visit, the focus was on checking the possible accommodation for the incoming JICA Volunteer during the duration of the assignment at BSU.

The representatives were guided by International Relations Office Coordinator Jake Galian and College of Agriculture staff member Dianne Pingalo as they visited and inspected available housing options within and around the campus.

The visit highlights the continuing partnership between BSU and JICA and their shared commitment to academic development, community extension, and international cooperation, contributing to #SDG17partnershipsforthegoals.

December 12, 2025Meet Mr. Dunhill P. Gasic, a student from the College of Human Kinetics-Benguet State University, our official grantee of the Erasmus+ KA171 Programme Student Mobility at the University of Huelva, Spain.

The student mobility runs from February to July 2026. A 5-month engagement for the student to learn, study, develop new skills, and gain international experience.

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s program that promotes academic mobility, partnership development, and capacity-building among higher education and research institutions, providing opportunities for students and staff to study, learn, and collaborate with partner institutions abroad.

December 11, 2025Benguet State University, once again, received commendation from the Commission on Higher Education during the Internationalization Champions of Nation-Building and Sustainability (ICONS) Awards 2025, held on 10 December 2025 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City. Representing BSU at the ceremony was Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office.

The ICONS Awards is an annual CHED initiative that recognizes Philippine Higher Education Institutions for their high-impact initiatives toward sustainability, commendable performance in international rankings and ratings, trailblazing internationalization efforts, and valuable contributions to ASEAN’s regional prosperity. It celebrates institutions that strengthen Philippine higher education through global engagement and sustainable development.

For 2025, more than 100 HEIs across the Philippines were honored for their outstanding achievements in global rankings, sustainability, ASEAN awareness, and internationalization. Among these institutions, BSU, with its continuing momentum for receiving recognition in the last ICONS AWARD in 2024, once again recognized this 2025 for serving as an exemplary champion of the future of Philippine higher education, demonstrated through the notable international achievements:

This year’s campaign goes with the theme “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity” and builds on the momentum of 2024 by highlighting the role of young guardians of integrity, the young people who raise awareness, speak out, and help shape a more transparent and accountable future.

December 5, 2025Today, the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings were announced, and for the first time joining, Benguet State University ranked 674th globally, 390th in Asia, and 29th in the Philippines, among a total of 1,745 global Higher Education Institutions from 101 countries. This year saw an increase of over 300 HEIs from the previous 1,477 in 2024, with BSU joining for the first time.

The UI GreenMetric is a global ranking that recognizes universities for their efforts toward sustainability, including campus infrastructure, energy and climate initiatives, waste and water management, transportation, and sustainability-focused education and research.

Notably, BSU made an impressive debut as 4th among all HEIs in the Cordillera Administrative Region, and 29th out of 89 HEIs in the Philippines.

BSU also takes pride in maintaining its long-standing reputation as a pioneer of Education and Research in the Cordillera region. In this year’s results, the university earned the highest score in the Education and Research category among all HEIs in CAR, reflecting the deep dedication to teaching, learning, and research that support sustainability.

This milestone is a meaningful step for BSU as we continue to strengthen our commitment to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable campus.

We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to all Higher Education Institutions in the world, CAR and across the Philippines that participated and ranked in this year’s UI GreenMetric.

December 5, 2025“Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities”

World Soil Day, celebrated every 5 December, reminds us of the importance of healthy soil and the need to manage soil resources in a sustainable way. The idea of having a day dedicated to soil began in 2002, when the International Union of Soil Sciences recommended it. With the support of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Global Soil Partnership, the FAO helped push for its formal recognition. In 2013, the FAO Conference approved it, and later that year, the UN General Assembly officially declared 5 December 2014 as the first World Soil Day.

December 3, 2025Today, we join the global community in observing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day dedicated to promoting understanding, advocating for dignity, and reinforcing the importance of inclusion in all aspects of society.

This year’s theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” highlights the importance of building communities where persons with disabilities are fully included, not just accommodated. It reminds us that inclusion becomes even more urgent when we look at the realities many persons with disabilities experience today.

1.3 billion people (1 in 6) live with significant disabilities.

They are at twice the risk of developing major health conditions.

Many die up to 20 years earlier than non-disabled individuals.

Transportation is 15 times harder to access.

Stigma, discrimination, poverty, and barriers in education, work, and health services create major inequities.

These facts show why this year’s theme matters. Building disability-inclusive societies means making sure that everyone is included and empowered, not left behind. To achieve real social development, we must work together on reducing poverty, providing decent and productive employment, and ensuring full social integration—goals that can only be reached when all people have equal opportunities and support.

By supporting disability-inclusive policies and removing barriers, we help create fairer systems and stronger communities. December 2, 2025On December 02, 2025, Benguet State University had the honor of welcoming representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The visiting team was composed of Senior Program Officer Lara Javier, Program Officer Lyr Faith Paruhinog, and Japanese Volunteer Coordinators Shibasaki Eiji and Kato Makoto. Their visit is part of the ongoing initiatives between BSU and JICA, especially in supporting the ongoing Pomology Project of the university.

Upon their arrival, the group was warmly welcomed at the office of the President by Josel M. Florentin, Vice President for Business Affairs. Joining him were Constantino T. Sudaypan, Dean of the Benguet State University-College of Agriculture; Jamesly Andres, Chair of the Extension Department; and Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office. Their presence showed that BSU values its partners and aims to continue working closely with them.

During their courtesy call to the BSU-Office of the President, the delegates briefly introduced themselves and shared the direction and plans for the collaboration. After the courtesy visit, the team proceeded to the College of Agriculture for a more detailed meeting. Both sides discussed the preparations needed by the University, the Agency, and the incoming JICA volunteer who will serve at BSU next year. They also explored additional areas where the volunteer may be involved, including community extension activities and academic engagement. Furthermore, they also discussed potential future partnerships, such as possible collaboration with the College of Forestry- BSU in the coming years.

Following the productive discussion, the group was given a tour around the College of Agriculture. They visited the office where the incoming volunteer will be staying and the colleagues the volunteer will be with. The tour also included a visit to the area where the Pomology Project is being implemented. This gave the JICA representatives a closer look at the current progress of the project, the layout of the area, the problems encountered, and the different fruit trees that have been planted. After viewing the project site, the group also visited the Marketing Center, where they saw and explored the various products sold by BSU.

BSU looks forward to the arrival of the JICA volunteer and the new opportunities this partnership will bring for learning, research, and community development, supporting global goals such as Quality Education (#SDG4), Zero Hunger (#SDG2), Life on Land (#SDG15), Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (#SDG16), and Partnerships for the Goals (#SDG17).

November 27, 2025Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, is pleased to announce that the International Cooperation Department of Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), Lithuania, will be hosting its International Staff Week on 20–24 April 2026.

Benguet State University has one (1) Erasmus+ grant allocated for a teaching mobility or training mobility to VMU. In line with Erasmus+ priorities, teaching mobility applications will be given preference.

November 26, 2025Benguet State University warmly welcomed the delegation from Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU). The visiting team was composed of Year 3 and 4 Nursing students, led by Assoc. Prof. Pei-Ling Wu, Deputy Director of the Department of Nursing, and Assoc. Prof. Yen-Chiao Angel Lu. Their visit is part of the growing partnership and exchange activities between BSU and CSMU.

To introduce the visitors to the university, the group was brought on a campus tour. They explored key areas of BSU, such as the University Library, where they learned about available learning resources; the University Clinic, which showed how basic health services are provided; and the University Museum, where they saw the rich culture and history of the University. The team also visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, where they were introduced to BSU’s work on beekeeping and research, and finally, the Strawberry Farm at the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center, a well-known symbol of La Trinidad.

A welcome program was later held at the International Relations Office. In the welcome message, Dean Mark U. Gay-as, of the Benguet State University College of Nursing Community, officially welcomed the visitors and shared the story of BSU’s partnership with CSMU, including how both institutions plan to continue to work together through academic linkages and student learning activities. He also mentioned the plans for the next days of the visit. Associate Dean Jude L. Tayaben introduced the members of the visiting team, and IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang gave a short message to close the program.

After lunch, the visitors went to the College of Nursing for a hands-on experience. They observed the Nursing classrooms, visited the Simulation Laboratory, and learned how BSU trains its students using different equipment and setups. Their day ended with a clinical exposure at Benguet General Hospital, where they were able to see actual hospital operations and patient care practices in the local setting.

Overall, the day ended on a high note, with the visitors gaining new learning experiences from the campus tour, the simulation lab activities, and their clinical exposure at Benguet General Hospital. It was a full and productive day that helped them get a glimpse of BSU’s programs, culture, and community. This visit is only the beginning, as the team still has more activities lined up in the next few days, giving them more chances to learn, connect, and deepen the partnership between BSU and CSMU.

November 24, 2025Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) in Indonesia is offering a fully funded Master’s scholarship for citizens of ASEAN member countries (including Timor-Leste, but not Indonesia). This program gives students and professionals a chance to study at UNPAD and helps strengthen cooperation and leadership across ASEAN.

The scholarship consists of two master’s level tracks:

November 21, 2025This November 21, 2025, Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, warmly welcomed the visiting team from the UP Korea Research Center (UP KRC), a Korean studies hub that works across the UP constituent universities to develop Korean Studies Academic programs and research, and also assist other educational institutions that are interested in building Korean studies for their faculty and students.

The group was led by UP KRC Director, Dr. Kyungmin Bae, together with staff member Pamela Jacar, research assistant Venus Samonte, and a Professor from De La Salle University, Dr. Bubbles Beverly Asor. Their visit aimed to learn more about BSU and explore possible academic connections that may benefit both institutions.

IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang, with staff member Raquel M. Fatog, received the guests and introduced them to BSU’s goals and internationalization efforts. The meeting became a valuable chance for the UP Korea Research Center to share who they are, the work they do. In return, Benguet State University presented its academic offerings, university profile, and some practices that reflect the institution’s strengths and areas of growth. These exchanges helped both sides understand each other’s direction and identify points where their interests meet.

Through their discussions, the visiting team and BSU explored possible areas for collaboration, including research, culture, and academic linkages that may be developed in the coming years. Both parties expressed interest in building a relationship that can support future joint initiatives and contribute to wider cooperation among universities. Their engagement also opens pathways for BSU to broaden its connections within wider academic networks.

Both UP KRC and BSU look forward to continuing their conversations and opening more opportunities for meaningful cooperation that will benefit students, faculty, and the wider academic community. November 20, 2025On November 20, 2025, Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, warmly welcomed guests from Vaasan Ammattikorkeakoulu University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Finland, today. The visiting team consisted of Mr. Jun Nakamura, International Communication and Marketing Assistant, and Ms. Karina Björninen, representing VAMK’s Health Care and Social Services programs.

They were received by IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang and staff member Racquel M. Fatog, together with college representatives Greg B. Landocan from the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, Jake L. Galian from Benguet State University-College of Agriculture, and Frevy T. Orencia from the Benguet State University-College of Information Sciences.

The visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to strengthen academic and research linkages. VAMK and BSU also introduced to each other key information about their universities, allowing both sides to better understand their academic strengths, programs, and institutional priorities. Discussions also centered on the Nursing program and departments related to Business and Technology, along with other fields such as research that may serve as pathways for future collaboration.

Looking beyond today’s visit, BSU and VAMK hope to build stronger academic connections, explore joint programs, and create opportunities for students and staff to learn from each other. November 20, 2025On September 12, 2025, representatives from offices and communities in the Cordillera commemorated the peace accord that occurred 39 years in Mt. Data Hotel in Bauko, Mountain Province.  Sipat is a part of a traditional peace-making ceremony that involves the exchange of gifts from both parties. 

Benguet State University (BSU) reaffirmed its commitment to peace and development by joining the 39th anniversary of the Sipat. The university was represented by Dr. Stanley F. Anongos Jr., Dr. Leonardo T. Samonte, Dr. Maria Theresa B. Dolipas, Mr. Mark Joshua S. Balao-as, and Mr. Arnel T. Bassit.

The participation of BSU not only supports the national call for a just and lasting peace in the Cordillera but also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it advances SDG 9—building resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive development—and SDG 10—reducing inequalities.

The commemoration, led by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) together with peace stakeholders and local leaders, highlighted peace-building projects, infrastructure, and development initiatives worth ₱1.8 billion. These projects, set for implementation from Fiscal Year 2024 to 2026, aim to strengthen the Cordillera region and sustain its path toward peace and progress.

Part of this effort is an impact study on government programs for former CPLA members, commissioned by OPAPRU to BSU. The study seeks to shed light on the stories of CPLA members as they reintegrate into society—serving as a testament to the continuing journey toward lasting peace in the region.

As the community remembered the Sipat of 1986, the event also reflected on its enduring promise of autonomy. Over the years, the Sipat has become more than a peace accord—it has grown into a cultural symbol of unity and the Cordillerans’ shared desire for self-determination. The call for autonomy remains alive in the hearts of the people, even as challenges of unity and readiness continue to shape the journey toward full autonomy.

The celebration was graced by Contad, BSU’s Cultural Dance Troupe, who performed the Bendian Dance. The dance, born from the story of Apo Anno and shaped by steps gathered across the Cordillera, stood as a symbol of peace and unity.

November 18, 2025On November 17, 2025, Benguet State University warmly welcomed representatives from Alana Kaye College, Australia. The delegation was led by Ms. Alana Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, together with Mr. Arvin Alcantara, Country Manager of Alana Kaye International, Philippines.

This meeting was made possible through the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Cordillera Administrative Region, led by Assistant Secretary Antonio R. Tabora Jr., together with Socrates Abella Jr.

The visitors paid a courtesy call and held a short meeting with the University President, Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan, and the Director of the BSU International Relations Office, Dr. Rex John G. Bawang. The purpose of their visit was to explore possible academic and institutional partnerships between the two institutions.

During the meeting, Ms. Anderson and Mr. Alcantara shared their proposal for a Transnational Education (TNE) partnership in Baguio City and the Cordillera Administrative Region. Their plan focuses on offering internationally recognized Australian qualifications in Building and Construction, Individual Support, and Ageing Support. This will allow students in Northern Luzon to earn Australian-accredited training while staying in the Philippines, helping them gain global skills and better employment opportunities.

They also explained that the partnership will follow a phased approach. This will help develop a strong pool of local trainers who can deliver international-standard programs, supporting long-term growth, improving workforce skills, and creating more opportunities for communities in the region.

BSU looks forward to continuing the conversation with Alana Kaye College and strengthening this promising partnership. The university remains committed to building meaningful global connections that support quality education, improve local opportunities, and contribute to the sustainable development of the Cordillera region.

November 14, 2025A total of 121 research presentations is continuously being conducted in four parallel sessions across the themes of food, environment, and culture. This reflects the diverse scholarly engagement in both competing (72 papers), noncompeting (33 papers), and poster (16 papers) categories. This breadth of participation underscores the ICFEC’s commitment to fostering global conversations and cooperation in science, technology, innovation, and culture, all essential to building sustainable communities.

The researches on food, environment, and culture are vital for bridging the persistent gaps between agricultural science, policy, and practice, as these fields collectively address the complexity of achieving sustainability, food security, and improved nutrition in diverse contexts. By generating localized insights and evidence-based solutions, these studies pave the way for policies and innovations that are not only scientifically robust but also context-sensitive and feasible for real-world application. Ultimately, empowering communities and stakeholders to advance resilient and equitable food- systems.

November 8, 2025On November 7, 2025, Benguet State University accompanied delegates from the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigsburg (Evangelische Hochschule Ludwigsburg), Germany, on a visit to Ifugao State University. The visit aimed to explore future partnerships in academic collaboration, indigenous education, and cultural heritage preservation.

The day began with a courtesy meeting at the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, where Dr. Jennifer Madonna G. Dait, IFSU Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the delegation. The discussion focused on possible collaborations in indigenous and community-based education, gender-responsive teaching, and research exchange among the universities.

A meeting followed at the IFSU Boardroom, attended by faculty, researchers, and staff from the three institutions. The dialogue emphasized the value of integrating indigenous knowledge into higher education and identified opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, joint training, and collaborative research on sustainability and inclusivity.

In the afternoon, the BSU and EHL delegates, together with IFSU’s International Affairs and Linkages Office, visited the Ifugao Indigenous Peoples Education Center and the Community Heritage Galleries. They were welcomed by Mr. Marlon M. Martin, Chief Operations Officer of the Save the Ifugao Terraces Movement and founder of the IPED Center.

The group was composed of four international affairs coordinators and ten inbound students from Indonesia and Thailand under the SEAMEO SEA Teacher Batch 11 Program.

The visit aimed to give the students a deeper understanding of BSU’s internationalization initiatives and cultural engagements.After meeting with Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, BSU IRO Director, the guests went on a short campus tour guided by staff from the University Public Affairs Office and the International Relations Office.

During their tour, the delegates visited the Benguet State University Library & Information Services, where they were welcomed by Lauren P. Kipaan, Library Director. They also explored the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center with Schereid Joi N. Ugnasi of CRAC, the Food Science Research and Innovation Center with Caster Troy B. November 7, 2025On November 6, 2025, the delegates from the University of Guam, guided by Dr. Gigy G. Banes, Ms. Karryl Mae C. Ngina, and Mr. Jon Nicole Gutierrez from the College of Social Sciences, Mr. Jiban M. Caligtan from the Institute of Social Research and Development, and Mr. Roldan G. Day-ong from the International Relations Office, participated in a cultural immersion and educational tour around Benguet and Baguio City.

The tour also aimed to deepen the group’s understanding of Cordilleran culture and heritage, providing valuable context to their collaborative research and documentation on Indigenous healing practices between Benguet State University and the University of Guam.

The day began with a Courtesy Call at La Trinidad Mayor’s Office, where the delegation discussed the objectives of the visit and explored potential areas for future partnership and cultural collaboration. The visitors then enjoyed a hands-on experience at the Strawberry Farm, where they learned about local farming practices and participated in strawberry picking, one of Benguet’s well-known attractions.

The group then visited the Igorot Stone Kingdom, where they immersed themselves in Igorot heritage, learning from the stories, artistry, and symbolism embodied in the stone structures and cultural displays crafted by local artists. Their journey continued to Tam-awan Village, where they explored traditional Kalinga and Ifugao huts, giving them a glimpse of the Cordillera’s diverse Indigenous architecture and way of life.

The group then visited the University of the Philippines Baguio, where they toured the Cordillera Studies Center to learn about its publications on the Cordillera region. They also visited the Museo Kordilyera, viewing curated exhibits that feature artifacts and cultural objects representing the Indigenous peoples of Northern Luzon.

The tour concluded with a networking dinner at La Faayette, joined by IRO Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, IRO Staff Ms. Racquel M. Fatog and Mr. Jeric Raye T. Bayating, and ISRD Staff Ms. Kacy O. Labon. The dinner served as a reflective and collaborative session where participants exchanged insights, strengthened connections, and discussed ways forward for continuing partnership and future projects on academics, Indigenous knowledge, culture, and healing practices.

This cultural immersion forms part of the continuing partnership between Benguet State University and the University of Guam, further strengthening academic collaboration and promoting mutual appreciation of Indigenous knowledge, healing practices, and heritage preservation.

November 6, 2025Benguet State University hosted an International Seminar on Forest Resources Management and Assessment on November 6, 2025, at the Everlasting Hall, New Research and Extension Building.

The activity was organized by the College of Forestry, the Center of Geoinformatics, together with BSU’s academic partner, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Japan.

Students from the College of Forestry- BSU and the College of Natural Sciences – Benguet State University, along with faculty, staff, and community members, attended the event. The program started with a prayer, the national anthem, and the BSU Hymn.

Dr. Nova D. Doyog, Dean of the College of Forestry, gave the opening remarks, recalling how the partnership started and sharing her hopes that everyone would learn from the speakers. University President Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan followed with a message of appreciation to the guests and reminded everyone to use what we will learn and of the need to take care of our forests, as he shared, “While our forests are not only a source of livelihood and ecological balance, to us, it is part of survival. The first speaker was Dr. Peter Surovy, a Research Associate at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, who is also a professor at the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague. His discussion focused on remote sensing tools and the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in assessing forest resources. The second speaker was Dr. Patrick Asante, a Research Associate at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics and a Senior Researcher at the Ministry of Forests, British Columbia, Canada. His discussion gave a glimpse of Forest Economics and the Valuation of Forest Resources. The third speaker was Dr. Atsushi Yoshimoto, a Professor at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. He shared about the Japanese forest as he discussed an introduction to forest management.

An open forum allowed participants to share ideas and questions, followed by the closing remarks of Dr. Josel M. Florentin, Vice President for Business Affairs. November 5, 2025The Benguet State University warmly welcomed the delegates from the University of Guam for a day filled with learning, cultural sharing, and meaningful connections.

Since 2018, BSU, through the College of Social Sciences and Institute of Social Research and Development, together with the Gender and Development Office and International Relations Office, has partnered with the University of Guam to collaborate on issues related to Indigenous health, gender, history, and culture.

As part of this ongoing partnership, three important programs were held: the Book Launching, the Forum, and the Cultural Exchange.

The first part of the day was the Book Launching of “Healing Practices of the Igorots in the Cordillera and the CHamorus in the Mariana Islands,” which is a collaborative publication between BSU and UOG, celebrating the enduring wisdom and healing traditions of two Indigenous communities.

The event began with indigenous prayers from both the CHamoru and Cordillera traditions, followed by the national anthems of the Philippines and Guam.

To officially start the event, Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, VP for Research and Extension, gave the opening message and warmly welcomed everyone. Then, Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan, BSU President, gave a special message highlighting the importance of the documentation of traditional and indigenous practices.

Dr. Lisa Linda S. Natividad from the University of Guam shared how the book came to be, followed by excerpts read by the authors: Lisa Linda S. Natividad, Isabella K. Olalia, Julia Faye L. Muñoz, Kacy O. Labon, Jiban M. Caligtan, Gigy G. Banes, Ruth S. Batani, and Karryl Mae C. Ngina.

Reflections and responses were then shared by Dr. Ryan C. Guinaran, Maribeth B. Biano, and Paul Joseph A. Nuval, the reviewers of the book, who expressed their appreciation for the publication of the book. Dr. Gigy G. Banes read the acknowledgments, and Dr. Rex John G. Bawang closed the program by sharing his own experience in Indigenous healing and the importance of preserving and continuing these practices.

The second part of the event was the Forum on “CHamorus in the Mariana Islands: History, Indigenous Healing Practices, and Linkages with the Igorot in the Cordilleras,” hosted by the Benguet State University’s College of Social Sciences, Master of Arts in Social Studies Student Association, Institute of Social Research and Development, International Relations Office, and Office of Extension Services. The forum aimed to deepen intercultural understanding by exploring the history, traditions, and healing practices of the CHamoru people and their cultural ties with the Igorot communities of the Cordilleras.

Dr. Rex John G. Bawang opened the forum, followed by a message from Dr. Anita Rodriguez, President of the University of Guam, who emphasized the value of collaboration and shared heritage. Speakers included Dr. Caryle Corbin, who talked about the evolution of governance in Guam and the Philippines; Ms. Isabella Katharina Olalia, who gave a comparative analysis of CHamoru and Cordilleran traditions; Mr. Atdao Mami Natividad, who discussed spirituality and environmental connection; and Ms. Julia Faye Muñoz, who shared about CHamoru healing customs and values.

The discussion revealed many similarities between the two cultures, showing the deep kinship and solidarity that lead to more continued collaboration.

An interactive question-and-answer session followed, allowing participants to share reflections and insights.

To close, Dr. Kristine Baniqued-Dela Cruz of the College of Social Sciences congratulated everyone and left three inspiring reminders:

Students from the College of Home Economics and Technology, BSU, led by Dr. Florida S. Rosario, also provided their services during the event by assisting and serving the attendees. Their involvement reflected BSU’s strong commitment to its internationalization initiatives. This activity supports the goals of the International Relations Office, particularly under Program 2: Internationalization of Academic Engagements, Program 4: Promotion of Multinational Atmosphere in the University, and Program 5: Services and Support System for Internationalization.

In the afternoon, the day concluded with a lively Cultural Exchange between the University of Guam visitors, BSU students from the College of Social Sciences, College of Numeracy and Applied Sciences-Benguet State University, and BSU Kontad, celebrating unity, friendship, and the shared spirit of Indigenous identity and healing.
