Representing the Philippine National Muaythai Team, Abubakar brought immense pride to Benguet State University and the Philippines with her outstanding performance at the 2025 IFMA Senior World Championships held in Antalya, Turkey, from May 22 to June 1, 2025. Her achievement came just days before her graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Sciences (BSESS), major in Fitness and Sports Coaching under the College of Human Kinetics (CHK).
Competing as part of the Philippine National Muaythai Team, Abubakar brought home two medals in the international competition: a gold medal in the Senior Female Mai Muay and a bronze in the Senior Female Elite division. Her achievements contributed to the country’s overall success, with the Philippine team bringing home a total of 5 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Her journey to the world stage was guided by nine coaches, including Coach Edzel Ngina, a distinguished alumnus of BSU. He began coaching Abubakar in 2021 and together they have made significant strides in the sport, bringing honor to BSU and the Philippines.
Also playing a key role in the country’s triumph was Islay Erika Bomogao, an accomplished Muay Thai athlete and a distinguished alumna of BSU. She clinched two gold medals in the Wai Kru and Mai Muay Elite Female categories, along with a bronze in the Female Elite division. Her consistent international performance serves as a source of inspiration for fellow athletes from the region.
The achievements of Abubakar and Bomogao stand as powerful testaments to the dedication of Filipina athletes especially in combat sports. Their success highlights not only the athletic excellence nurtured at Benguet State University but also the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment through sports. //SGVictorino and LMWan-aten (BSDC IRO-interns)
