Today, we join the global community in observing International Anti-Corruption Day, a reminder of how corruption affects fairness, security, and trust in our societies. This year’s campaign goes with the theme “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity” and builds on the momentum of 2024 by highlighting the role of young guardians of integrity, the young people who raise awareness, speak out, and help shape a more transparent and accountable future.
Did you know?
• Young people feel they are the most affected by corruption.
• A global youth essay competition received 1,300+ entries, showing strong concern about how corruption limits education, jobs, and opportunities.
• Corruption drains public resources, weakens institutions, and reduces access to services like healthcare and education.
• There are 1.9 billion young people in the world today, nearly a quarter of the global population, making youth engagement essential in building an honest future.
• Technologies like AI and blockchain can help prevent, detect, and expose corruption when used responsibly.
These realities show why empowering young people is crucial. With their creativity, digital skills, and strong sense of fairness, they can help build transparent workplaces, ethical businesses, and accountable institutions. Education, responsible use of technology, and strong protections for whistle-blowers all play a major role in shaping a culture of integrity.
By promoting honesty, strengthening governance, and supporting youth-led efforts, we move closer to achieving peace, justice, and strong institutions (#SDG16).
