September 17, 2025On September 15-16, 2025, Benguet State University (BSU) had the honor of welcoming Ms. Chiaki Kawai and Mr. Takahiro Matsuzaki from the Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Japan. The two-day visit formed part of ongoing efforts to explore opportunities for academic exchange and cultural collaboration between the institutions.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to engage in dialogue, explore potential areas of partnership, and share best practices in higher education, administration, and research development.

On the first day, the delegates were warmly received by the Director of the BSU International Relations Office, Dr. Rex John G. Bawang. The initial meeting served as a venue to discuss the goals of both institutions and to outline the itinerary of activities. The guests also met Yuki Takahashi, one of the university’s international students from Japan, before proceeding to a campus tour with brief visits to the University Library, Marketing Center, University Canteen, University Clinic, University Museum, University Gym, the Office of Student Services, and the Guestel.

In the afternoon, they also had a brief stop at the Benguet Museum for an overview of the province’s rich cultural heritage. This was followed by a courtesy call with the Provincial Governor, Dr. Melchor D. Diclas. To conclude the day, a cultural welcome was hosted at the International Relations Office. The program opened with warm remarks from Dr. Rex John G. Bawang and featured a vibrant performance of cultural dances by the BSU Center for Culture and the Arts’ KONTAD Highland Cultural Dance Troupe.

The delegates were also warmly welcomed by University President, Dr. Kenneth A. Laruan, to whom they responded with expressions of gratitude and shared their hopes for a good relationship with BSU. The program also featured a presentation by IRO staff member Roldan Day-ong, followed by a presentation from ILC staff member Lory Jane Luban, together with international students Soma Yauchi and Yuki Takahashi. To officially end the program, closing remarks were delivered by Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw. The day then wrapped up with a delightful dinner shared with our guests.

The second day began with a visit to the Office of the President, followed by a tour of Valleywood led by ILC Director Jhordan T. Cuilan, CAH IRO Director Ms. Reslyn G. Capuyan, and ILC staff members Jessica Mariel Banking and Lory Jane Luban. Here, the delegates experienced one of the area’s tourist attractions and enjoyed a scenic view of the valley of La Trinidad, where the university is situated. The morning continued with a refreshing nature walk at Mount Costa, where the guests admired its beautiful landscapes. As part of the tour, the delegates were also shown areas such as the public market, supermarkets, and the hospital, which are places that their students may go should they come to study at BSU.

In the afternoon, the delegates observed classroom settings, providing them with valuable insights into BSU’s teaching methods and student engagement. The visit concluded with a dialogue session with ILC and IRO, which included an overview of the diverse programs of the International Language Center, along with discussions on how the IRO can support the preparation of future collaborations.

September 8, 2025Today, we join the world in the celebration of International Literacy Day with a theme that defines our time: “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.”

The digital world is a powerful tool, but only if you know how to use it. In today’s digital world, literacy goes beyond reading and writing. It’s the ability to spot fake news, communicate respectfully, think critically, share responsibly, and navigate the online world with purpose and care.

Digital literacy helps us learn, connect, and create. But it also challenges us to be responsible, thoughtful, and kind users of technology, making sure everyone can benefit from technology, without being left behind.

Today, let us commit not only to spreading literacy but also to building a smarter, safer, and more inclusive digital world for everyone.

July 11, 2025The United Nations first celebrated World Population Day on July 11, 1990. Since then, it has been observed annually to raise public awareness about global population issues and challenges.

This year, we spotlight the power of youth with the theme:“Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world.”

While fertility rates are falling, many young people still lack the rights and resources to shape their future. Let’s break down economic, social, and health barriers and ensure every youth has the freedom to choose their own path.

Let’s work together to provide every young person with the rights, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

July 7, 2025Benguet State University continues to advance in global education as Ms. Liaa Eve Dalilis Tacio, a Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL) student, represented the university under the Erasmus+ KA171 Undergraduate Student Mobility Program

As the second batch of BSU students to join this program since 2017, Ms. Tacio concluded her mobility and strengthened BSU’s global academic linkages bringing home fresh perspectives and experiences. She had her mobility at the University of Huelva (UHU), Spain. Ms. Tacio spent the spring semester of 2025, from February to July, immersed in an enriching academic and intercultural experience.

Her mobility also coincided with another milestone for BSU participation in the Erasmus+ Teaching and Training Mobility Program at UHU, held last March 31 to April 4, 2025. During this period, Ms. Tacio proudly joined Mr. Rex John G. Bawang and BSU alumna Dr. Anabelle Anod Bawang in representing the university during the Universidad de Huelva’s International Week, a vibrant gathering of 80 guests from more than 30 countries around the world.

Among the week’s highlights was the Study Abroad Fair, which provided an opportunity for students, professors, administrators, and staff to connect with international partners and strengthen the bonds that bring them together. During the fair, one can obtain information about partner international academic institutions, request information about exchanges and scholarships, and talk to representatives of partner universities, as well as to Erasmus+ graduate students from UHU.

Ms. Liaa Eve Tacio, together with Mr. Rex John G. Bawang and Dr. Anabelle Anod Bawang, presented Benguet State University programs during the fair and discussed with UHU students, faculty members, staff, and the co-fair participants not only the program offerings but also the unique culture within and surrounding the university during their five-day mobility.

The Erasmus+ mobility program aims to enhance academic cooperation, intercultural understanding, and the professional development of both students and educators. For BSU, it serves as a strategic platform for global engagement, and for students like Liaa, it is a life-changing opportunity to learn, grow, and lead beyond borders.

Ms. Tacio’s participation served not only as a valuable personal and academic experience but also as a significant contribution to BSU’s international visibility and global engagement efforts. Her performance reflects the university’s commitment to nurturing globally competent students and encouraging broader participation in international programs such as Erasmus+. //SGVictorino and LMWan-aten (BSU-IRO Interns)

The contingent was headed by the Chairman of the Muaythai Association of the Philippines, General Lucas Managuelod, and its President, Stephen Arapoc.

Her journey to the world stage was guided by nine coaches, including Coach Edzel Ngina, a distinguished alumnus of BSU. He began coaching Abubakar in 2021 and together they have made significant strides in the sport, bringing honor to BSU and the Philippines.

Also playing a key role in the country’s triumph was Islay Erika Bomogao, an accomplished Muay Thai athlete and a distinguished alumna of BSU.
