Through films, sounds, and videos, we can see and hear the stories of different communities, languages, and traditions. They show the worldโs rich culture and diversity. These are not just old materials, but they are living memories of peopleโs creativity, strength, and shared experiences. Keeping these archives safe helps us remember who we are.
Did you know?
Every 27th of October, the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is observed globally to highlight the urgent need to preserve films, sound recordings, TV/radio archives, and other audiovisual documents.
The date marks the day in 1980 when UNESCO adopted the โRecommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Imagesโ.
In 2025, the day reaches a 20th anniversary milestone and the theme is themed as a โwindow to the worldโ, recognizing how audiovisual heritage connects us across time, geography, and culture.
You can help by digitizing your old recordings, watching a restored film, or simply sharing your favorite historical clip today!

[…]The training workshop was a week-long event, which took place at the Bioproduction and Machinery Laboratory, University of Tsukuba, led by Dr. Tofael Ahamed. The training was aimed at creating low-cost smartphone-based solutions to monitor plant health through the use of canopy imaging and a deep learning-based solution. This initiative supports Benguet State Universityโs (BSU) ongoing project to develop a user-friendly mobile application that will help local cabbage and potato farmers assess crop nutrient requirements and optimize fertilizer application. The workshop covered key topics such as image preprocessing, deep learning fundamentals, mobile development, and website development. The participants were able to integrate the deep learning model in the mobile application and website, completing the prototype for the project’s nitrogen (N)-application advisory tool.
In addition to the week-long training, Dr. Pablo and Ms. Orencia also had the opportunity to participate in the 2025 Tsukuba Conference. The conference was in its fourth edition since its launch in 2019 and brings together scientists, innovators, and emerging leaders from around the world to exchange ideas and explore cutting-edge research. With this yearโs theme โGoing into New Frontiers with Society,โ the conference was focused on key areas such as space exploration, deep-sea research, brain science, nuclear fusion, and hydrogen energy. It also highlighted pressing issues and potential innovations relevant to the Global South, fostering collaboration toward sustainable and inclusive development. Among the plenary sessions attended by the BSU delegates were the Opening and Future Shapers Sessions, which gathered emerging scientists and leaders from various countries to discuss how emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data science can serve human needs rather than replace them. The project participants presented in the special session on โAI and IoT to Integrate Automation in Farm Management: A Path to Sustainable Agriculture,โ organized by Dr. Tofael. The BSU participants were able to engage with international experts from Malaysia, Taiwan, and Belgium who shared their research on digital tools for efficient farm management. These discussions are closely aligned with the BSU Precision Agriculture Projectโs vision of using accessible technology to help Benguet farmers make informed fertilizer decisions and improve yield quality.
The visit concluded with a benchmarking activity at the Tsukuba Plant Innovation Research Center and other research facilities that showcased Japanโs advancements in agricultural engineering, sustainable farming, and precision crop management.
Impact on Sustainable Development Goals
The projectโs focus on using technology to optimize fertilizer use and improve crop yields directly contributes to the United Nationsโ Sustainable Development Goals:
#SDG2 (Zero Hunger) by improving productivity and economic profitability of staple crops to enhance local food security; #SDG9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by integrating artificial intelligence and mobile development into the agricultural sector; and #SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting the optimized use of fertilizer to minimize waste and environmental pollution, ensuring more sustainable farming practices

[…]The visit provided a valuable opportunity to engage in dialogue, explore potential areas of partnership, and share best practices in higher education, administration, and research development.
On the first day, the delegates were warmly received by the Director of the BSU International Relations Office, Dr. Rex John G. Bawang. The initial meeting served as a venue to discuss the goals of both institutions and to outline the itinerary of activities. The guests also met Yuki Takahashi, one of the universityโs international students from Japan, before proceeding to a campus tour with brief visits to the University Library, Marketing Center, University Canteen, University Clinic, University Museum, University Gym, the Office of Student Services, and the Guestel.
In the afternoon, they also had a brief stop at the Benguet Museum for an overview of the province’s rich cultural heritage. This was followed by a courtesy call with the Provincial Governor, Dr. Melchor D. Diclas. To conclude the day, a cultural welcome was hosted at the International Relations Office. The program opened with warm remarks from Dr. Rex John G. Bawang and featured a vibrant performance of cultural dances by the BSU Center for Culture and the Artsโ KONTAD Highland Cultural Dance Troupe.
The delegates were also warmly welcomed by University President, Dr. Kenneth A. Laruan, to whom they responded with expressions of gratitude and shared their hopes for a good relationship with BSU. The program also featured a presentation by IRO staff member Roldan Day-ong, followed by a presentation from ILC staff member Lory Jane Luban, together with international students Soma Yauchi and Yuki Takahashi. To officially end the program, closing remarks were delivered by Dr. Doreen I. Allasiw. The day then wrapped up with a delightful dinner shared with our guests.
The second day began with a visit to the Office of the President, followed by a tour of Valleywood led by ILC Director Jhordan T. Cuilan, CAH IRO Director Ms. Reslyn G. Capuyan, and ILC staff members Jessica Mariel Banking and Lory Jane Luban. Here, the delegates experienced one of the areaโs tourist attractions and enjoyed a scenic view of the valley of La Trinidad, where the university is situated. The morning continued with a refreshing nature walk at Mount Costa, where the guests admired its beautiful landscapes. As part of the tour, the delegates were also shown areas such as the public market, supermarkets, and the hospital, which are places that their students may go should they come to study at BSU.
In the afternoon, the delegates observed classroom settings, providing them with valuable insights into BSUโs teaching methods and student engagement. The visit concluded with a dialogue session with ILC and IRO, which included an overview of the diverse programs of the International Language Center, along with discussions on how the IRO can support the preparation of future collaborations.

[…]The digital world is a powerful tool, but only if you know how to use it. In todayโs digital world, literacy goes beyond reading and writing. Itโs the ability to spot fake news, communicate respectfully, think critically, share responsibly, and navigate the online world with purpose and care.
Digital literacy helps us learn, connect, and create. But it also challenges us to be responsible, thoughtful, and kind users of technology, making sure everyone can benefit from technology, without being left behind.
Today, let us commit not only to spreading literacy but also to building a smarter, safer, and more inclusive digital world for everyone.
