February 3, 2025International Wetlands Day is celebrated every February 2nd to remember the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. This day helps raise awareness about the importance of wetlands in our environment. Wetlands provide homes for wildlife, clean water, help control floods, and help in fighting climate change.Featured Image: Agusan Marsh Wildlife SanctuaryThe Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, is a Ramsar site, an ecological and cultural area. The marsh acts as a natural flood buffer, absorbing excess rainwater and supporting diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, endangered Philippine crocodile, and various fish species. It also helps sustain Indigenous Manobo communities living in floating houses. However, threats like deforestation, pollution, and climate change endanger its ecosystem.Taking immediate action will help safeguard this sanctuary and ensure its protection for future generations.Photo by Gab MejiaCaption & Layout by: Mary Christine Yango (BSIT intern)#ProtectingWetlands, #SDGMatters, #WorldWetlandsDay […]Read more…

October 24, 2024Entry #1: Luntian by Lyan J. GradTucked in abundantly viridian land, it is inevitable that BSU highlights the sustainability effort of promoting a wholesome life on land which is the essence of SDG 15. The campus utilizes its vast land area to foster a rich variety of tree species that tower the colleges, providing a cleaner breeze that is in contrast to the polluted urban area beyond where adverse products of traffic are present. Thus, the omnipresence of trees–which paints the BSU landscape green or ‘luntian’–is able to exemplify the university’s efforts to live by the fifteenth SDG.#SDG11 #SDG15 #capturesustainability #BSUstainable Entry #2: Small LIFE by Rimei Jay M. GarciaThe picture depicts the leaf-footed bug, or Leptoglossus phyllopus. Even while little insects are occasionally mistakenly classified as pests or unusable in daily life, Not all insects are pests. They pollinate many of our fruits, flowers, and vegetables. We wouldn’t have as much of the produce that we adore and rely on if insects hadn’t pollinated it. Like dogs, cats, elephants, and other creatures, insects also have the life on land. For this reason, BSU works to preserve, restore, and encourage the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems through efforts that avoid biodiversity loss.#SDG15 #capturesustainability #BSUstainable Entry #3: The Green and Yellow of B.S.U. by Janelle D. Students and employees in the university are obliged to comply with the order as it helps to reduce the carbon dioxide emission from cars which causes health problems to the community. In addition, doing this simple practice makes our environment become sustainable which is also a big help in contributing to the climate action. Moreover, air pollution and traffic would be minimized at least once in a while to let the roads and parking areas breathe from the everyday parking of cars. Alcedo atthis bengalensis Gmelin, 1788 by Jannesse C. PacioThe Eurasian or River kingfisher is an important member of ecosystem and good indicator of freshwater community health. The highest densities of breeding birds are found in habitats with clear water, which permits optimal prey visibility, and trees or shrubs on the banks. These habitats have also the highest quality of water, so the presence of this bird confirms the standard of the water (Peris & Rodriguez, 1996). Measures to improve water flow can disrupt this habitat, and in particular, the replacement of natural banks by artificial confinement greatly reduces the populations of fish, amphibians and aquatic reptiles, and waterside birds are lost (Lin 𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘭., 2007).
