March 7, 2025A team of IRO coordinators (Leila P. Buluguey- Buguias, Violeta B. Bugtong-Bokod, Jennifer Paltiyan-Bugtong-CNS, Faustina Dio-as-CAH), led by IRO Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw, recently took part in an exciting networking session and orientation with top universities from British Columbia, including Thompson Rivers University, Capilano University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and Vancouver Community College.

The event, organized by the Canadian Embassy in partnership with CHED, opened up valuable conversations between Philippine and British Columbia universities about possible collaborations in transnational education. From academic partnerships and research collaborations to innovative learning initiatives, there was plenty of room to explore ways to work together.

For BSU, some of the most promising areas for collaboration include healthcare, indigenous knowledge, hospitality, and tourismโ€”fields that align well with the universityโ€™s strengths and priorities. But while the opportunities are exciting, universities that have been down this path before shared an important reminder: successful partnerships take honesty and trust. As one speaker put it, “Being upfront about each institutionโ€™s strengths and weaknesses from the start is crucial to building a lasting and meaningful collaboration.”

With this in mind, BSU IRO is looking forward to strengthening connections and turning these conversations into real opportunities that benefit both faculty and students. The journey may have just begun, but the potential is already promising. //DIAllasiw

February 27, 2025Are you a woman or do you identify as a woman, with a bachelorโ€™s degree in a STEM subject who wants to take your studies to the next level? Apply now for a fully-funded scholarship to study for a master’s degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) course at a leading UK university.

The ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarships are for women and people who identify as women, from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, with STEM backgrounds who can demonstrate their need for financial support and wish to pursue their dreams and advance their careers in STEM.

February 18, 2025BSU welcomed representatives from Odisee University College, Belgium, from February 17 to 21, 2025, to renew their academic partnership. Kathy Pletinckx and Sabrien De Prez visited the University to explore continued collaboration.

During the Flag Raising Ceremony on February 17, IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang formally introduced the Belgian delegates to the BSU community. They later paid a courtesy visit to BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, College of Nursing (CN) Dean Mark U. Gay-as, and other CN representatives to discuss future academic exchanges and joint initiatives.

As part of their visit, they toured key research centers, including the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) and the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), gaining insight into BSUโ€™s research and extension programs. A cultural welcome followed in the afternoon, where the KONTAD cultural group performed traditional dances, showcasing the University’s rich heritage.

BSU and Odisee University College previously collaborated on a student exchange program, with two Belgian nursing students sent to BSU in 2020. However, the initiative was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With this renewed engagement, both institutions aim to revive student exchanges and explore broader academic collaborations, including potential partnerships with the College of Teacher Education.

February 3, 2025Congratulations to the Philippine Higher Education Institutions for their remarkable participation in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025!

With a 95% increase in participation, 112 total HEIs, this milestone reflects the growing commitment of Philippine universities to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More than just rankings, this is a powerful platform for showcasing the excellence, innovation, and social impact of our HEIs. By aligning education, research, and community engagement with the SDGs, Philippine universities are shaping a more sustainable and inclusive futureโ€”locally and globally.

February 3, 2025International Wetlands Day is celebrated every February 2nd to remember the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971. This day helps raise awareness about the importance of wetlands in our environment. Wetlands provide homes for wildlife, clean water, help control floods, and help in fighting climate change.

Featured Image: Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary

The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, is a Ramsar site, an ecological and cultural area. The marsh acts as a natural flood buffer, absorbing excess rainwater and supporting diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, endangered Philippine crocodile, and various fish species. It also helps sustain Indigenous Manobo communities living in floating houses. However, threats like deforestation, pollution, and climate change endanger its ecosystem.

Taking immediate action will help safeguard this sanctuary and ensure its protection for future generations.
