During a Courtesy call with President Felipe Salaing Comila, Dr. Ultra disussed his interests and outlined his schedule of activities with BSU Research and Extension. His expertise in mining studies and agricultural soils will be shared with the university.

The ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarships are for women and people who identify as women, from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, with STEM backgrounds who can demonstrate their need for financial support and wish to pursue their dreams and advance their careers in STEM.
Why a scholarship programme?
The gender gap in STEM professions is well documented. Not only do women make up a small fraction of the workforce and research teams in STEM, but they are also published less, paid less and are less likely to reach positions of leadership than their male counterparts, despite being proven to be on average 8% more productive.

During the Flag Raising Ceremony on February 17, IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang formally introduced the Belgian delegates to the BSU community. They later paid a courtesy visit to BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, College of Nursing (CN) Dean Mark U. Gay-as, and other CN representatives to discuss future academic exchanges and joint initiatives.
As part of their visit, they toured key research centers, including the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) and the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), gaining insight into BSUโs research and extension programs. A cultural welcome followed in the afternoon, where the KONTAD cultural group performed traditional dances, showcasing the Universityโs rich heritage.
BSU and Odisee University College previously collaborated on a student exchange program, with two Belgian nursing students sent to BSU in 2020. However, the initiative was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With this renewed engagement, both institutions aim to revive student exchanges and explore broader academic collaborations, including potential partnerships with the College of Teacher Education.

The signing was witnessed by IRO Director Rex John Bawang, IRO Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw, and College of Teacher Education (CTE) Dean Divina Yango.
Ahead of the signing, the delegation from Chaopraya University and the Prasert-Tasnee Poongkumarn Foundation paid a courtesy visit to President Laruan on February 12, 2025. The Thai delegates included Kamolsin, Dej-Sira, Tinagorn Poolput, Foundation representatives Sunee Singhakacern and Sawang Singkahacern, and Director Sippanon Mang-Ana from Khortor School. They were accompanied by La Trinidadโs former mayor, Edna Tabanda, and Faustina Gualdo. During the meeting, both parties explored potential collaborations, leading to the formalization of the agreement.
In a meeting facilitated by IRO, CTE Dean Divina M. Yango and IRO Coordinator Dolores Alawas engaged with the Thai delegation to exchange insights on their respective university programs and explore avenues for collaboration.

The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, is a Ramsar site, an ecological and cultural area. The marsh acts as a natural flood buffer, absorbing excess rainwater and supporting diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, endangered Philippine crocodile, and various fish species. It also helps sustain Indigenous Manobo communities living in floating houses. However, threats like deforestation, pollution, and climate change endanger its ecosystem.
Taking immediate action will help safeguard this sanctuary and ensure its protection for future generations.

After the introductory meeting, Mr. Takarada proceeded to meet Vice President for Research and Extension Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres. During their discussion, they explored potential areas for collaboration between Takara Inc. and BSU. Mr. Takarada also shared that he discovered BSU through Dr. Marlowe Aquino of Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), where they are collaborating on garlic processing, particularly in producing black garlic.
Later, Mr. Takarada met with FSRIC Director Lesley Dale Umayat, where they discussed their shared interest in food processing and production, comparing methods used in Japan and the Philippines. The visit continued with a tour led by ATBI Director Ruth C. Diego, who showcased the universityโs Incubation Center and ATBI Demo Farms. Dr. Diego highlighted how the university supports its incubatees in producing and marketing strawberries and strawberry-based products.

Following the courtesy call, Ms. Gonzales toured BSUโs La Trinidad Campus, starting with the Centennial Park for a glimpse into the universityโs history. She also visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) where Research Assistant Leo Kimbungan introduced her to BSUโs bee research and honey production initiatives.
The tour continued at the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where Von Amado shared insights into BSUโs coffee production practices, including the innovative โcoffee under pineโ farming system. The tour concluded at the Benguet Museum, where Provincial Tourism Officer Kenneth Kelcho provided an overview of Benguetโs rich cultural history.

In his welcome remarks, IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang provided a brief introduction to Cordilleran culture. Atty. Maridel P. Langbis, representing BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, extended a warm welcome to the guests, emphasizing the shared values of indigenous culture among Pacific Islanders and Cordillerans. On behalf of the University of Guam (UoG), Lisa Linda Natividad underscored the enduring partnership between BSU and UoG, highlighting almost six years of collaboration that continue to expand, now involving other Pacific Island partners.
As part of the program, the delegates presented a gift to BSU, which was handed over by Hema Wi Hongi from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and received by Atty. Langbis. The evening concluded with a community dance performed by KONTAD, joined by the delegates, followed by a moving Mฤori chant by Hema. IRO Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude and anticipation for further collaborations.
The delegates represent various Pacific Islands and will participate in a research symposium on January 9, 2025, at the Carnation Hall, Research and Extension Building.

The signing was witnessed by members of the IRO team, including Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw and staff members Racquel M. Fatog, Glyrel B. Palberas, Ian Jones B. Backian, and Benigno C. Mangay-at.
During the event, President Laruan highlighted the importance of conducting a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) to identify capacity-building programs tailored to Kabayanโs development goals. These initiatives aim to advance local internationalization (IZN) efforts and empower communities through education and collaboration. In response, Kabayan officials invited the BSU team in their upcoming eco-tourism celebration and Bendiyan Festival in May 2025.
This MOA marks a milestone in IROโs mission to localize internationalization by extending BSUโs global engagement initiatives beyond the campus and into Benguet municipalities. Kabayan is the first municipality to formalize such a partnership, and the IRO is optimistic that this initiative will inspire other municipalities to join in collaborative efforts.
Earlier this year, the IRO also met with Kapangan LGU in July to discuss similar opportunities for collaboration, further reinforcing its commitment to community-driven internationalization efforts. [โฆ]

In the afternoon, the Research and Extension (R&E) sector hosted an introductory meeting on exploring international organizations in support of BSUโs global goals. The visiting professors shared opportunities for BSU to join international organizations and introduced their academic journal, which BSU researchers could consider for publishing their studies.
The delegation also toured BSUโs research centers, including the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA) and the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC). Their visit will continue until December 19, 2024. [โฆ]
This recognition highlights BSUโs growing presence on the global stage, as shown by its achievements securing rank 801-1000 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and rank 193 in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).
BSUโs consistent performance in these global rankings reflects its dedication to advancing internationalization, sustainability, and innovation. This latest recognition further strengthens BSUโs vision of bringing โBSU to the World and the World to BSU.โ [โฆ]

The IRO joins the BSU community in celebrating the appointment of Dr. Kenneth Alip Laruan as the 8th President of Benguet State University! [โฆ]
The forum began with a recorded message from Antonio G.M. La Viรฑa, Associate Director of the Klima Center of Manila Observatory. This was followed by an insightful online presentation from Atty. Vicente Paolo Yu, who is currently attending COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he serves as the lead negotiator for G77+ China on Loss and Damage (L&D). Atty. Yu shared the historical context and potential future directions for L&D negotiations on the international stage.
Furthermore, Dr. Ma. Laurice Jamero and Atty. Jameela Joy Reyes presented local insights and firsthand accounts of the challenges faced by indigenous farmers in Atok, Benguet. Their presentations provided essential policy recommendations for incorporating indigenous responses into climate change adaptation and resilience strategies.
A round table discussion followed, where participants exchanged ideas on improving L&D funding access and amplifying local voices in climate policy. The event concluded with a call to action by Betty C. Listino from Pansigedan Advocacy Cooperative, and closing remarks from Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, BSU Vice President for Research and Extension, reinforcing BSUโs commitment to sustainable and resilient farming practices in the Cordillera.
Participants left with new insights and strategies to support indigenous farming communities, reaffirming BSUโs role in advancing sustainability and leadership in the Cordillera region. [โฆ]

In his opening remarks, IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang outlined the rationale behind the initiative, emphasizing the importance of sustainability education for the university and the region. Dr. Warathida Chaiyapa, a sustainability expert from Chiang Mai University, Thailand, delivered an insightful keynote exploring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and introducing the emerging Inner Development Goals (IDGs) framework.
Students from the Bachelor of Science in Development Communication also showcased their video outputs, which highlighted the current state of SDG implementation and proposed actionable steps for universities.
Vice President for Research and Extension, Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, led the participants in a sustainability pledge, calling for collective action to address the challenges of the SDGs within the university. To mark the conclusion of the event, Dr. Lumbres and Director Bawang led the signing of the Sustainability Commitment Wall, followed by BSU officials and student participants.
ABOUT THE SUSTAINABILITY LITERACY PROGRAMThe Sustainability Literacy Program at BSU will be a powerful tool for promoting sustainability education, fostering regional development, and addressing the pressing environmental and social challenges faced by the Cordillera region and beyond. Tucked in abundantly viridian land, it is inevitable that BSU highlights the sustainability effort of promoting a wholesome life on land which is the essence of SDG 15. The campus utilizes its vast land area to foster a rich variety of tree species that tower the colleges, providing a cleaner breeze that is in contrast to the polluted urban area beyond where adverse products of traffic are present. Thus, the omnipresence of treesโwhich paints the BSU landscape green or โluntianโโis able to exemplify the universityโs efforts to live by the fifteenth SDG.

They pollinate many of our fruits, flowers, and vegetables. We wouldnโt have as much of the produce that we adore and rely on if insects hadnโt pollinated it. Like dogs, cats, elephants, and other creatures, insects also have the life on land. Pursuant to the Executive Order 05-2018, the municipality of La Trinidad including the Benguet State University, is mandated to practice the observance of monthly Carless Thursday, which started on September 05, 2024. This order/practice is very important as it aligns with the 4 SDGs, namely: SDG 3, 11, 13, and 15. Students and employees in the university are obliged to comply with the order as it helps to reduce the carbon dioxide emission from cars which causes health problems to the community. In addition, doing this simple practice makes our environment become sustainable which is also a big help in contributing to the climate action. Moreover, air pollution and traffic would be minimized at least once in a while to let the roads and parking areas breathe from the everyday parking of cars. Dr. Chalermwan shared innovative strategies for cultivating a customer-focused approach, highlighting its impact on business practices from local to global perspectives. As part of an ongoing partnership with the University of Guam (UoG), faculty members from BSU were invited to speak at a research symposium on Indigenous Health Practices of the Cordillera and the Pacific. The team includes Stanley F. Anongos, Gigy G. Banes, Ruth S. Batani, Karryl Mae C. Ngina, and Tecah C. Sagandoy from the College of Social Sciences, along with Estrelle M. Daclan, head of Gender and Development. The exchange provided unique opportunity to forge lasting connections and partnerships aside from exploring the intricate tapestry of indigenous healing modalities.
Since 2018, BSU through the College of Social Sciences (CSS) and Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD) together with the Gender and Development Office (GAD) and International Relations Office (IRO) and University of Guam (UOG) have maintained a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on issues related to Indigenous health, gender, history, and culture.
The team met with the President and Senior Vice President and deans of the University of Guam to explore opportunities for further collaboration. They were also introduced to the Universityโs โSharing Island Wisdomโ program, specifically the project on Reviving Traditional Navigation project.
Already on itโs 7th year, the faculty-student program facilitated BSUโs hosting of UoGโs visits in 2018 and 2023 respectively, while UoG funded and hosted this recent visit and a previous visit back in 2019. This program was initiated by Liza Linda Natividad of UoG under the Department of Social Work and CHamoru Studies and Gigy Banes of the College of Social Sciences, BSU. The partnership was first conceptualized by Gigy and Lisa during their participation in the Global Leadership School (GLS) of the Foro Internacional de Mujeres Indigenas- International Indigenous Womenโs Forum (FIMI-IIWF) in New York City on April 2018. This year, Abubakar secured a Silver medal in the Senior Female Mai Muay Category and placed 5th in the Senior Female Elite โ 48 kg category at the IFMA Senior World Championship held in Greece from May 31 to June 10. Her journey in Muay Thai has been marked by notable successes, reflecting her dedication, skill, and passion for the sport.
Abubakarโs rise in Muay Thai began with her international debut in December 2021, where she won a bronze medal at the Muay Thai World Championships & Festival in Thailand, competing against 951 athletes. In September 2022, she further showcased her prowess by winning two bronze medals at the FISU World University Cup Combat Sports in Samsun, Turkey, and the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Continuing her streak of success, she earned a Silver medal at the World Combat Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and placed 5th at the Muay Thai World Championship in 2023.
Abubakarโs achievements are a testament to her hard work and the excellent guidance of her coach, Mr. Edzel Ngina. A distinguished alumnus of BSU, Mr. Ngina holds a Diploma in Physical Education (DPE) and a Master of Science in Physical Education (MSPE) from the College of Human Kinetics. He began coaching Abubakar in 2021, and together, they have made significant strides in the sport, bringing honor to BSU and the Philippines.
Abubakarโs success story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes. The meeting was a significant step towards forging a collaborative partnership between IRO and the Kapangan LGU. Mayor Fermin expressed his support for the initiative by endorsing the proposal to the Sangguniang Bayan for further review and approval.
During the meeting, Deputy Director Allasiw delivered a presentation outlining the objectives, strategies, and expected outcomes of the International Extension Program. Her presentation highlighted the programโs focus on fostering cross-cultural exchange and enhancing educational opportunities. On the other hand, Director Bawang addressed various inquiries from the council members. He provided detailed explanations about the programโs framework, implementation timeline, and the specific benefits it would bring to the Kapangan community and emphasized the importance of collaboration and active participation from local stakeholders to ensure the programโs success.
The collaboration between IRO and the Kapangan LGU is an initiative to build strong partnerships with local governments in Benguet province. [โฆ]

Integrating cultural dances into the curriculum is crucial. According to Ms. Corina L. Masing, it is unusual for the youth to have access to the culture which is likely to be forgotten because we are near the urban areas. โAng kagandahan ng integration ng Indigenous dances so that they (the youth) will not forget. It is more of an appreciation of culture. Also, the students from the lowland areas will appreciate the culture we have here in the Cordillera by starting from the Indigenous dances.โ

The signing of agreements commenced with the MOU with Maksima Teacher Training Centre, followed by an online signing with the University of Wroclaw represented by Marvin T. Valentin, who conveyed a brief message regarding the partnership. Mr. Valentin is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in the represented university in Poland. Subsequently, the MOU with UNIPMA was signed, with officials from the Indonesian university participating online. Vice Rector Jeffry Handhika delivered a message emphasizing the importance of the partnership. Lastly, an MOA was signed onsite with AORA, represented by Jose Feliciano Josef, who also shared a message highlighting the significance of collaboration from the industryโs perspective.

College of Numeracy and Applies Sciences (CNAS) faculty member Marycel T. Sajise participated in Vytautas Magnus Universityโs International Staff Weekโ24 last April 22- 25, 2024.
During the three-day event, Ms. Sajise immersed in the VMU community and met with experts and professors from different universities all over the world. Activities during International Staff Week included training and social events that allowed participants to get to know each other. She also had the opportunity to conduct classes and share her expertise in Statistics with VMU students and staff.
The International Staff Weekโ24 featured 79 lecturers and comprehensive training program involving 112 participants from 41 countries, [โฆ]

They are the second batch of students to engage in this program, following the participation of four students who attended the Cross-Cultural Camp in Vietnam and Japan in 2023.
The Cross-Cultural Training Camp offers more than just skill development; it serves as a platform for cultivating a global perspective. As these BSU students return home, they not only bring back enhanced skills but also a broader outlook and a network of international connections that will undoubtedly enrich their personal and professional development. The first session was about Integration of AI in Personalized Learning while the afternoon session was on Gamifcation and AI in Education. A total of 270 students actively participated in the two-session event attended by students from the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), College of Information Sciences (CIS), College of Human Kinetics (CHK) and College of Teacher Education (CTE).
The event was facilitated and organized by CAH IRO Focal Person Jhordan T. Cuilan, CIS IRO Focal Person Jovelyn P. Lao-e, CHK focal person Jandy U. Gay-as, CTE IRO Focal Person Desiree F. Botengan, the IRO Staff and interns. [โฆ]
During an exploratory meeting, OU Assistant Director and IRO Focal Person Gedion Ulban presented the BSU Open University Learning Management System (LMS), while Professor Pablo shared some best practices and other software used in online learning. The group discussed the potential of offering courses through the LMS and proposed negotiations for a Memorandum of Understanding.
Following the meeting, a lecture on Spanish Language and sustainability was conducted, with a total of 36 students from the College of Human Kinetics (CHK) and BSU Secondary Laboratory School (BSU-SLS) participating.
As part of his engagement at the university, Professor Pablo visited the Buguais and Bokod Campuses on March 26 and 27, respectively. Additionally, he conducted a lecture at Bokod Campus organized by IRO Focal Person Chester B. Esnara.
This marks the third visit by Professor Pablo to BSU, during which he has initiated partnerships with different colleges including the College of Human Kinetics, College of Teacher Education, BSU Bokod Campus, and this year, the Open University. His first visit was in 2019 followed by another in 2022. [โฆ]
A meeting was conducted to discuss the MOU. In his welcoming remarks, VPRE Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres emphasized the universityโs need for international research collaboration and the publication of international researchers in the MSJIR, BSUโs official University Research Journal. He also shared his goals for each research center to have international research partners.
The group proceeded to discuss the details of the aforementioned MOU, with REPO Director Cheryll C. Launio and IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang facilitating the session. The proposed collaborative activities and programs covered research cooperation, faculty and researcher exchange, among others. Protocols for forging international partnerships were also discussed, including the time frame for the approval of the document.
Among the participating BSU representatives were OVPRE Researcher Matyline Camfili-Talastas, CA representative Samuel L. Duyan, OU Assistant Director Rashid B. Lokines, NPRCTC Researchers Jennie Balao and Gabby Dao-ines, ISRD Researcher Kacy O. Labon, and IRO staff Glyrel B. Palberas. Jessica Rivera, a grantee of the Kochi University Sakura Science Exchange Program and faculty from CA, also attended the meeting.
Prior to the meeting, the group attended the flag ceremony at the Benguet Provincial Capitol where they met with Governor Melchor D. Diclas. A courtesy visit to the President Felipe Salaing Comila was also conducted.
In addition to exploring partnership opportunities, the visiting Japanese delegation conducted interviews in the province. Their focus was on Filipino interns who had undergone training programs in Japan. The purpose of these interviews was to evaluate the impact of the training program on the interns upon their return to the Philippines. [โฆ]
The TESSI Institute served as a platform to equip faculty members with the expertise and tools essential for the redesigning of courses and curricula, aimed at addressing critical global challenges. [โฆ]
Following the meeting, the group proceeded to the College of Agriculture for a presentation by Daichi Umekawa. He shared his research findings titled, โSituation of Carrot Production and Determinants of Productivity in Benguet Province, Philippines,โ conducted during his student exchange program with BSU from January to May 2023, spending a semester immersed in the university.
A campus and community excursion was conducted led by Sakura Science Exchange Program Grantees Kacy Labon and Mary An Altaki. The delegation visited the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center (BAPTC) and the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post (LTVTP).
The day concluded with a cultural welcome featuring the KONTAD Cultural Dance Troupe, where the Japanese visitors were taught cultural dances in the region, enriching their cultural exchange experience during their visit. [โฆ]
The symposium, titled โSmart and Green Cities for a Brighter Quality of Life,โ brought together project leaders and researchers from the Philippines, Japan, and Thailand to share insights and findings on smart city planning and design. The event was held at the Paragon Hotel in Baguio from March 7 to 8, 2024.
Participating institutions included the Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), Benguet State University, De La Salle University (DLSU), and esteemed Japanese and Thai institutions such as Chubu University, Toyohashi University of Technology, Nagoya University, Aichi Institute of Technology, Nippon Engineering Consultancy, Thammasat University, Mahidol University, and Suranaree University of Technology. Professor Satoshi Kubota from Kochi University, Japan visited BSU to introduce the Kuroshio Scholarship Program and deliver a lecture on the Internet of Plants (IoP) Project on March 1, 2024. A total of 68 participants attended the event.
The Kuroshio Scholarship program is a program provided by the Kochi University for international PhD students . It aims to recruit outstanding students who will serve as a bridge between Kochi University and their own countries upon completion. Additionally, a masterโs scholarship program focusing on agricultural and marine sciences was also highlighted. Both scholarship programs receive funding from the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).
During his presentation, Professor Kubota introduced a research initiative known as the Internet of Plants (IoP) Project. This innovative project employs precision agriculture techniques to systematically monitor diverse aspects of plant growth and environmental conditions. It achieves this by tracking real-time data on critical factors like photosynthesis, crop development, yield, and weather conditions. This project aims to establish an โIoP Cloudโ platform that provides producers with data spanning from production to distribution, enhancing agricultural efficiency and sustainability.
As part of the visit, an excursion was organized to enhance the professorโs understanding of the universityโ research capabilities. Professor Kubota toured the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRTRTC) and explored various laboratories, including the Soil, Plant, and Water Laboratory. [โฆ]

Curriculum on Agroecology (CDAE) Project Leader, Janet P. Pablo, along with project members Maria Luz D. Fang-asan, Kenneth A. Lauran, and Joanna I. Alafag, travelled to Hue University, Vietnam to participate in the Final Conference for the Curriculum on Agroecology from October 11 to 15, 2023. During this event, the group delivered a presentation on the pilot offering of the Master of Science in AgroEcology at Benguet State University. The masterโs program received approval from the Board of Regents on July 27, 2023, as per BOR Res. No. 43 s. 2023. Currently, seven students are enrolled in the program.In addition, the team had the opportunity to showcase other degree programs offered by Benguet State University through an exhibit during the conference.

Participants in the PDOS included CDAE Project members Kenneth Laruan and Joahna Alafag, as well as Sakura Science Exchange Program grantees Jessica Rivera, Rashid Lokines, Mattyline Camfili, Kacy Labon, Mary An Altaki, and Jenny Balao. The BSU CDAE Taskforce is scheduled to travel to Vietnam from October 11 to 15, 2023, while the Sakura Science grantees will travel to Japan from November 12 to 18, 2023.
During the orientation session, participants received information and guidance on various aspects of their international travels including cultural awareness, safety measures, and resources available to them while abroad. The goal of PDOS is to ensure that they are well-prepared and equipped to make the most of their experiences.
In addition. the IRO had the privilege of welcoming Director for a Day Grace Palayen from Loo National High School in Buguias. During her visit, Grace gained valuable insights into the functions of the International Relations Office and was introduced to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The IRO also offered a glimpse into the world of international diplomacy and global citizenship.

The Fulbright Specialist Programโs โGlobal Curriculum Par Excellence: Sharing of Best Practices in Indigenizing and Engendering the Curriculum for Internationalizationโ training program officially started on September 19, 2023. The primary objective of this program is to equip faculty participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to effectively utilize Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in their teaching methods and curriculum development efforts.
During the commencement of the program, Kaisipan Fellow Nina Maria Estudillo provided an overview of the iLearn, iCreate, iShare Digital Framework that the participants will be working with. She explained key concepts that will complement the lessons to be covered in the upcoming days.
Fulbright Specialist Maria Africa Beebe facilitated an open discussion where participants identified the limitations of advancing the curriculum through digitalizing classrooms. The discussion explored the challenges and potential barriers that may arise when integrating ICT into the curriculum.

A courtesy call was conducted wherein the President Felipe Salaing Comila personally welcomed Dr. Beebe. She was accompanied by the BSU Kaisipan Fellows Jovelyn P. Lao-e, Renebeth G. Donguiz, Frevie T. Orencia, Imelda G. Parcasio, and Divina M. Yango. IRO Deputy Director Rex John G. Bawang and CTE IRO Focal Person Desiree F. Botengan also attended the courtesy visit.
To kickstart Dr. Beebeโs engagement, a campus and community tour was organized. This included a visit to BSUโs Centennial Park and the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), The excursion concluded with a visit to the Benguet Capitol, offering a breathtaking view of the La Trinidad Valley and an overlooking perspective of Benguet State University.
Culminating Dr. Beebeโs first day in the University is a cultural dinner attended by BSU Kaisipan Fellows and IRO focal persons. Dr. Beebe shared her inspiring journey as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Cordilleras. The cultural exchange continued with the KONTAD Cultural Dance Troupe, showcasing various Cordillera dances. In his message, President Felipe Salaing Comila underscored the significance of this engagement, noting that this is the Universityโs second time hosting a Fulbright specialist.
Dr. Beebeโs Fulbright engagement will be focusing on integrating digitalization methods in curriculum development. She will be spearheading the training of trainers program titled โ Global Curriculum Par Excellence: Sharing of Best Practices in Indigenizing & Engendering the Curriculum for Internationalization.โ The series of lectures and workshop will run from September 19 โ October 5, 2023. Ambassador Elizabeth Buensuceso, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN, visited the University on February 17, 2023. The ambassador and her party engage in a strawberry picking activity at the BSU- ATBI Incubator Farms. VP for International Relations Stanley F. Anongos Jr. and Star Colleges President Ambrosio Alawas accompanied the visitors.
To welcome the visitors, the IRO hosted a lunch meeting. The banquet provided an opportunity for the ambassador and BSU officials to discuss the promotion of Cordilleran products in the ASEAN region. In addition, Ambassador Buensuceso took the opportunity to enlighten the group on the symbols of the ASEAN flag. The ambassador then proceeded to Star Colleges for her speaking engagement.

Marios Paraskevopoulos (Paras) & Michalis Tsakonas, resource speakers from Novel Group Sarl (Novel), commenced the training about networking skills and discussed three topics: partnerships and communication, computer-mediated communication, and branding and contextual design. Paras discussed that networking is getting to know the people who can assist in creating your career prospects. On the other hand, partnering relates to actions and arrangements in which both parties agree to cooperate and collaborate to progress their joint and mutual interests. He also added some of the importance and differences of having partners and networks. โNetworks open new doors for new opportunities, and it gets support from high-profile individuals while partnering provides opportunities to learn new strategies and get or make your project/institution/organization more popular or known. So, it is important to choose your partner well in projects and linkages,โ Paras advised.
Paras cited that the pandemic opened many online networking communities, but most struggle to make meaningful connections. So, Paras suggested that to make your connections expand, one must join in networking events such as conferences or study visits. โNetworking events can be physical conferences or online. Setting up physical and online conferences should be planned strategically and carefully. We should also evaluate if the venue is conducive or appropriate or if the participants are familiar with the online platform to be used,โ said Paras.
Tsakonas ended the Vocational Educational Training with his branding and contextual design lecture. He emphasized that quality and personal excellence are crucial elements of branding. โSome things that can impact personal brands are using an email signature, accounts on LinkedIn, business cards, emails, voice messages, and any presentation or visual aids presented or handed to anyone. Choose wisely on social platforms to mainstream your branding, and focus on what is important to your organization rather than what is most popular,โ said Tsakonas.
The morning plenary session continued with a presentation from Rui Amaro of Polytechnic of Coimbra featuring the Analysis of an Agroforestry farm of 1,305ha with three main objectives; type of forest, trees, animal production, and pastures (Irrigated & Non-Irrigated Land).
Further, Janet Pablo, BSU project leader, facilitated the networking activity prepared for the last day of the Study Visit to the Philippines. This activity allows the European partners and Benguet State University to exchange information in areas of agriculture, forestry, environmental science, statistics, and the opportunities for the MSAE program. This engagement involves research directors, department chairpersons, faculty of various colleges, and heads from the admin sector of the university.
Moreover, the afternoon plenary session commenced right after the networking engagement. The afternoon session focused on the remaining two replication training and the presentation of the Virtual Learning Environment platform.
Manuela Abelho of Polytechnic of Coimbra started the afternoon session with her lecture on Soil Microbial Biomass as an Indicator of Soil Health. โThe increasing demand for food led to intensive agriculture, which resulted in using fertilizers and pesticides. With these problems, organic agriculture is viewed as a solution. Also, the effects of microorganisms and microbial biomass as an indicator of soil health and basis for productivity seems to be the best practice in organic agriculture,โ explained Abelho.
The replication training was completed by Pedro Moreira of Polytechnic of Coimbra in his lecture on Circular Economy in Agroecosystems. Moreira stated that the โcircular economy in agriculture production and agricultural commodities reduces as much as possible the external inputs, closing nutrient loops, and reducing negative discharges to the environment for both waste and emissions. โIt is like transforming a/the waste into a solution to the system,โ Moreira added. Further, Moreira emphasized organic agriculture as a tool for a circular economy and cited their Project Divulgar-Bio as an example. โThis project created publications- manuals for organic agriculture with the help of partners from various universities and directly involving farmers and organizations,โ Moreira supplemented.
As a pre-ending capacity-building activity, Novel presented the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) platform via Zoom to the consortium and the participants. Nikolaos Politopoulos virtually walked through the participants and partners to the VLE platform. Specifically, Politopoulos presented how to: create an account, access the course, and how to use the platformโs features. During the administrative training, the Novel Group Sarl (Novel) discussed three skills: business administration skills, management skills, and fundraising skills. Michael Tsakonas of Novel lectured on management skills. The first slide of his presentation received attention from the participants. It is a quote that says; success today is no guarantee of success tomorrow. โOne-day success doesnโt determine the success for the entirety. There are many possibilities and outcomes that can affect tomorrow, and complacency is dangerous in management. Keep exploring beyond boundaries and innovating,โ stressed Tsakonas.
The first skills highlighted the importance of making timely management decisions and leadership, including basic leadership skills for start-up agroecology projects. Then, the training progressed to business administration and fundraising skills, which engaged the participants in analyzing, assessing, and planning a business and fundraising management strategy.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the hall, Mendel University in Brno (Mendelu) presented six replication training to the BSU and CLSU academic participants. The first replication training was lectured by Milada Stastna of Mendelu regarding Agroecology and its place or position in Agriculture. Stastna emphasized the principles that are aligned and unaligned with Agroecology. โContrary to the notion of people, agroecology is not organic farming, and it comes under agroecology,โ she stated.
The second replication training is on Environmental Security and Ecosystem Services by Hana Stredova of Mendel. โGlobal security threats as of today and for the next years are nuclear war, ecological collapse, and the debate for the use of biotechnological innovations. However, these challenges can be abated when a community or countries gather together to discuss indifferences for the betterment of the world,โ said Stredova.
Further, Pedro Moreira from Polytechnic of Coimbra presented Environmentally Friendly Plant Protection Strategies and emphasized how plants are valuable and essential in habitat, clothing, and fighting climate changeโs effects. โPlants are our helping partners in sweeping the global environment crisis and is one of the main sustainable approaches to agriculture,โ Moreira added.
At the halftime of the Day 3 training, the project partners had a quick visit to the BSU-International Relations Office (IRO) and an excursion to the Apiary Demonstration Farm located at the College of Forestry, which were accompanied by IRO and BSU staff during the engagement.
After the quick excursion, the fourth replication training on Agroecology Directions and Examples of How to Foster Impacts of Climate Change by Stastna continued. โAgroecology plays a major role in climate change adaptation and mitigation than conventional agriculture,โ said Stastna. To prove this claim, Stastna provided a case in point pieces of evidence and sustainability components for crops, soil, and water to fulfill the economic, social, and ecological of agroecology.
Stredova ended the training with her lecture about Agroecology and its frame in agrosciences, agronomy, agrology, and agroecology. Stredova underscored that agriculture and the environment must go hand-in-hand. โIt should not only be balancing agricultural activities which are often or most of the time devastating nature but also trying to preserve and conserve the โecologyโ or natural resources as much as possible,โ said Stredova

The project partners explored the Insectarium, Natural Museum, Apiary, Tangere โ Animal Production, and the โCoffee under Pinesโ of Arabica Coffee in IHFSA. They were assisted by IHFSA Director Valentino Macanes, IHFSA staff, and Dr. Gemma S. Dasilen.
After the experience in IHFSA, the European and CLSUโs next stop was at the ATBI/IC. Director Lesley Dale G. Umayat assisted and showcased the food processing for Dried Veggie Noodles at the Food Science Research and Innovation Center.
The first part of the excursion ended at the Strawberry Farm to witness the local farm and its marketplace. ATBI staff Jocy Dangatan assisted with the tour and presented to the partners the Incubation & Innovation Center, where the co-creation lab of the Innotal Project (Erasmus+ funded) was lodged. Then, she introduced some of the initiatives and interventions of the center to assist local strawberry and vegetable farmersโ production in La Trinidad.
After the excursion, the project partners proceeded to the Everlasting Hall to continue the training for Module 2A Curriculum & Module 3B Course Design Evaluation, and Module 5B Entrepreneurship Skills, where Marios Parakevopoulos and Michalis Tsakonas facilitated the training by Novel Group Sarl.
Paras expressed that there are numerous ways to develop or design a curriculum, but he stressed and suggested that a curriculum should be anchored to the studentโs needs and interests and meet the universityโs strategic goals, mission, and vision.
Further, in the discussion of the Novel Group Sarl speakers on the Entrepreneurship Skills module, they emphasized the words: listen, understand and empathize. โKnowledge is powerless if we do not listen and understand where the consumers or our employees are coming from. Know how they feel on matters. We need to be reminded that two-way communication is important for the road to success, not only to our human resources but to business or entrepreneurship,โ speakers from Novel Group Sarl said.
After the training, Benguet State University and Mendel University in Brno (Mendelu) had a quick discussion on possible opportunities for students and personnel for the offering of the Master of Science in Agroecology at the university. Both parties agreed to create a Memorandum of Understanding to bind the agreements and to work together even after the CDAE project ends.

BSU hosts the Study Visit to the Philippines: Capacity Building for Academic and Administrative Staff of the Curriculum Development Agroecology (CDAE) Project funded by Erasmus+
Project leader Dr. Janet P. Pablo spearheaded the capacity-building activity at the Everlasting Hall, Research and Extension Building.
โStudy Visit to the Philippines is one of the lineup events under Work Package 3: Capacity Building for Administrative and Academic Staff for BSU and CLSU. This event primarily aims to capacitate the (Acad & Admin) staff in preparation for the soon-to-be offered Master of Science in Agroecology program at BSU and CLSU.
Service Learning Providers are project partners from Mendel University in Brno (Czech Republic), Polytechnic of Coimbra (Portugal), Novel Group Sarl (Luxembourg)โ conveyed by Mike L. Payangdo, project staff, and event organizer.
The project Curriculum Development in Agroecology (CDAE) aims to provide access to agricultural knowledge and information on ecological and organic farming systems by developing a course for agroecology for the target groups. The CDAE project aims to define a new Masterโs course in Asian HEIs in knowledge exchange between European and Asian HEIs. The duration of the project is from November 2019-November 2022.
The training for capacity building will end on September 9, 2022. This project is among the international linkages supervised by the BSU- International Relations Office.

Two Benguet State University students emerged as the champions of the first BSU Business Hackathon after a grueling three-day competition on what to develop as a product and how to market it to address malnutrition among children.
The hackathon titled โiNNOV โ Business Hackathonโ was held from July 12-14, 2023. Local business owners mentored the participants along with resource persons from National Line Agencies, the University of Alicante, Spain and University of Montpellier, France. [โฆ]

On February 20, 2023, Professor Satoshi Kubota of Kochi University, Japan visited BSU. He was introduced during the Flag-Raising Ceremony and had a courtesy call with President Felipe Salaing Comila. REPO Director Cheryll C. Launio, CNS IRO Focal Person Louisa Pladio, and IRO Deputy Director Maricel A. Guron accompanied the guest.
During his visit, he delivered a lecture to the College of Natural Sciences faculty and students. A total of 32 participants attended the activity which included representatives from the three departments (Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science) and BSU- Secondary Laboratory School (BSU-SLS).
In his discussion. he introduced Kochi University, the Kuroshio Science Program, and other postgraduate scholarship opportunities. He, then, discussed about setting up of Biotechnology Laboratory in SUCs which was an interest of the said college. Ambassador Kell joined by Dyan Mabunga Rodriguez (NZ Aid Programme Manager) promoted post-graduate scholarship opportunities in New Zealand during their visit in the University on January 31, 2023.
A total of 80 faculty members and staff from different colleges and units participated the forum. During the discussions, Ambassador Kell encouraged participants to apply not only for world-class education but also for the New Zealand Experience โ its people and culture. Several New Zealand universities were also featured. Among them were Massey University, the University of Otago, the University of Auckland, and the University of Canterbury. Ms. Rodriguez discussed the specifics and requirements of the scholarships.
The forum concluded with a closing remarks by the IRO Director Maria Luz D. Fang-asan. She expressed her gratitude to the Ambassador for considering BSU in their scholarship program.

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships offer fully-funded postgraduate scholarships for Master of Arts (MAs) and Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) programs in different specializations.

Yuki Yoshida and Giles Sioen, researchers from Japanโs National Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES), visit BSU to observe potential future research collaborations on January 27, 2023.
An exploratory meeting was conducted with the VPRE Johnny S. Dati, and the directors of concerned research centers. Among the presenters were Climate Smart Agriculture Center (CSAC) Director Genevieve R. Tabon, CorCAARD Director Janet P. Pablo, Center for Geoinformatics (GIS) Director Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, and Representative for the Communication and Climate Change Project Jennyline Tabangcura. After the meeting, they were then able to visit a research site in Talingguroy.
Prior to their visit to the University, the guests conducted interviews with farmers in Atok, Benguet to gather information about local community culture and climate change perspectives. With the support of the IRO focal person, Leila Pulinney-Buloguey, they were also able to visit the BSU Buguias Campus.
Ms. Doreen I. Allasiw, an instructor from the Department of Development Communication and a colleague of the scientists, accompanied them during their visit in the province. This engagement was initiated by the College of Information Sciences. [โฆ]
Congratulations! to Ms. Angeli T. Austria for being chosen as the Erasmus+ KA 171 Staff Teaching Mobility grantee to Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania.
Ms. Austria will be the fifth batch of BSU personnel to be sent through this program. As part of the mobility, she will represent Benguet State University at VMUโs International Staff Week on April 24 โ 28, 2023.
She is also the counterpart of the three VMU researchers (Ricardas Narijauskas, Sonata Kazlauskaite, and Arunas Balsevicius) who were hosted by BSU last January 18-20, 2023.

Their university engagement included visits to the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), the Agri-Technology Based Innovation/Incubation Center (ATBI/IC), and the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC). During these visits, Lithuanian Mobility Alumni Jennifer Paltiyan-Bugtong and Jones Napaldet joined the guests.

โYue Xin Cupโ: Chinese Language and Culture Training (also known as the Learn Mandarin, Go To Nanjing Language Training Program) culminates in a Virtual Graduation Ceremony conducted on January 8, 2023. Twenty-five BSU students completed the three-month training program wherein ten of them received the Outstanding Student Award. During the culminating ceremony, students presented songs and dances showcasing what they learned. Team BSU also won various prizes in an activity facilitated by the YueXin Group.
The Learn Mandarin, Go to Nanjing Language Program started in September 2022. The students were able to learn Chinese vocabulary words and tones. Also, they learned about Chinese traditional cuisine and festivals during their cultural sessions.

The 2023 MECO-TECO Sandwich Scholarship Program is now open for applications!
The MECO-TECO SSP is open to masterโs and doctoral students who would like to conduct their researches in a university or research institution in Taiwan.
MECO-TECO SSP recipients are granted with a stipend of NT$20,000 for MS student and NTS30,000 for PhD student per month from NSTC, while DOST grants scholars with relocation assistance of Php30,000.00, one roundtrip economy airfare, and travel and accident insurance.

BSU President Felipe Salaing Comila, Executive Assistant Andres Arnold W. Lampacan, Bokod Executive Dean Shakira B. Herman, and OES Director Anna Cris L. Langaoan represent the University during the QS Higher Education Summit: Asia Pacific 2022 in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 8 โ 10, 2022.
The event is a three-day hybrid conference and exhibition aimed at providing a platform for APac Universities to discuss upcoming trends and opportunities in Higher Education. It also provided an opportunity for participants to promote their universities and build new networks.
Benguet State University was rated 3 stars during the QS Stars University Rating Systems audit in 2020. QS Stars is a rating system that evaluates universities based on various performance indicators such as program strength, facilities, graduate employability, social responsibility, and inclusiveness, among others.

TU Vice President for International Cooperation Kumi Yasonubo, Asistant Professor Asres Elias Baysa, PhD Student Yuki Toyama and Mastersโ students Kazuki Miyatani and Daichi Umekawa visited the university on October 27-31, 2022 .
Representatives from the College of Agriculture-Department of Agribusiness, Economics and Agricultural Management (CA-DAEAM), Office of the University Registrar (OUR), Research and Extension Publication Office (REPO), Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), Office of Legal Affairs (OLA), International Language Center(ILC) and IRO conducted a meeting on the possible Student Exchange Program between the two universities. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the aforementioned program and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the university partnership are in the works.
Following the MOA approval, the university will host Umekawa in January 2023 under CA-DAEAM. [โฆ]
The forum emphasized the need for stronger protections and support for those on the frontlines of environmental advocacy. This experience empowered me to further champion environmental rights in my local work and global initiatives.

The YSEALI Academic Fellowship is an intensive short-term academic program that provides young leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States and of a particular theme, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. [โฆ]
BSU welcomes Professor Pablo Antonio Cano Jimenez of University of Huelva, Spain on September 12, 2022. Prof. Jimenez visited the University for a teaching engagement with the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), College of Human Kinetics (CHK), and the College of Teacher Education (CTE). Apart from that, he will also visit Bokod and Buguias Campuses.
Prof. Jimenez visited BSU in 2019 as part of a Staff Teaching Mobility funded by the Erasmus+ program. In 2020, he virtually continued his engagements with BSU offering a Spanish Language Course to BSU faculty members, with 17 faculty members graduating from the online program. He was also invited to be a resource speaker in the webinar โGlimpses of Spanish Language and Culture,โ which was conducted in May 2021 by the International Language Center and the College of Arts and Humanities.
