Abstract:

Despite the rich landscape of Philippine literature, there remains a limited understanding of how specific literary forms and their linguistic delivery influence students’ motivation to read across the archipelago. Grounded in Guthrie and Wigfield’s Engagement Model, this study addresses this gap by exploring the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that shape learners’ engagement with local texts. Utilizing an exploratory qualitative design, the study involved 18 language students purposefully selected from the Philippines’ three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, who participated in semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed a duality in reading motivation: while learners are primarily driven to read contemporary genres due to their social realism and linguistic accessibility via “Taglish”, they simultaneously exhibit deep engagement with complex historical narratives like Noli Me Tangere. This finding suggests that historical consciousness, the desire for identity reclamation, can override linguistic barriers regardless of regional background. The study concludes that effective literature instruction must navigate both the psychological need for mirroring lived experiences and the sociological need for anchoring a unified national identity. These insights support a pedagogical strategy of thematic pairing, where educators integrate high-interest contemporary texts with canonical works to optimize student engagement on a national scale.

April 20, 2026Benguet State University, through the College of Social Sciences (CSS), Office of Extension Services (OES), International Relations Office (IRO), Gender and Development (GAD), and the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), in collaboration with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), conducted the activity titled “Empowering Communities Through Peace Process Capacity Building in the Cordillera” at the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC), Solibao Function Hall, on April 20, 2026.

The event was attended by representatives from the Department of Education (DepEd), La Trinidad and Baguio City, as well as students from various colleges, educators, faculty members, and researchers. The program began with an opening prayer led by Ma’am Michelle Gabol, OPAPRU 4 Project Staff. This was followed by the opening remarks from Sir Rex John Bawang, IRO Director, and the rationale delivered by the OPAPRU Project Leader, Ma’am Gigy Banes, who emphasized the importance of young people learning about and being aware of indigenous knowledge in peace education.

Insights into various indigenous peace practices were shared by the resource speakers. The first speaker, Ma’am Kacy Labon, a staff member from the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), presented “Justice on the Ground: Bultung as a Pathway to Where Peace is Found.” This was followed by Ma’am Melody Angco, a faculty member from the College of Social Sciences (CSS), who discussed “Weaving Peace in Apayao: The Role of Awat, Palna, Lapat, and Pumiyan in Indigenous Conflict Resolution.”

Meanwhile, Ma’am Freda Kate Samuel, Associate Dean of the College of Numeracy and Applied Sciences (CNAS), talked about “Echoes of Tongtong: Understanding YBenguet’s Peace Process Dynamics.” Sir Jeff Feliciano, a faculty member from CSS, presented the “Traditional Framework for Discipline and Self-regulation in Mountain Province.” Sir Charles Atonen, OPAPRU SIPAT IKS Project 4 Staff, shared “Where Hands Meet and Harmony Returns: Indigenous Peace Process in Abra.” Lastly, Sir Jefftee Ben Pinos-an discussed “An Appreciation of an Indigenous Conflict Resolution Model in the Case of Kalinga’s Bodong System.”

An open forum followed, allowing participants to ask questions and seek clarification on the topics discussed. This was followed by the awarding of certificates to the resource speakers, facilitated by Ma’am Kristine Dela Cruz, Chairperson of the Department of History and Philosophy under CSS, together with Sir Rex John Bawang.

April 15, 2026BSU’s internationalization initiatives include curriculum enhancements, partnerships, including a 3‑unit foreign language in many programs. It helps the university meet CHED‑driven internationalization objectives, such as strengthening foreign‑language competence and cross‑cultural understanding among graduates.

Language learning naturally involves absorbing elements of the target culture. While full immersion in the community offers the most effective path to meaningful proficiency, it’s not always feasible. In such cases, supplementing traditional classroom strategies with cultural activities—like singing native songs, learning dances, and cooking local delicacies—can greatly enhance retention and engagement.

This is why our class incorporated a song and a dance performance. The song, “Eres Tu,” is an enduring love song, while the dance makes use of Latin-American Salsa steps, but the music used is the Spanish song “Vivir Mi Vida”.// D. Alawas, CTE Faculty

OA or Nonchalant: A Survey of Open Access Dissemination Initiatives of Higher Education Institution Library Websites and Systems in the Philippinesby Daniel Soriano Balbin

Abstract:

“The objective of this study is to determine the extent to which libraries are disseminating open access (OA) through conducting a survey of the different library websites and systems of higher education institution (HEI) libraries in the Philippines. This also aims to identify the types, subject fields, quantity, and quality of the OA resources shared by private and public HEI libraries in terms of the links they embed in their websites and systems. The study employed a quantitative research design focusing on website analysis. The findings revealed that many libraries have established websites and systems that they use to embed information about OA resources. Most OA resource links disseminated by HEI libraries are multidisciplinary, and the majority of these are OA journals. Comparing the number of OA resources advertised by HEI libraries, private institutions tend to share more links. From the 2,917 OA resources embedded in 312 library websites, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) topped the most shared OA resource. Although librarians selected resources indexed in reputable databases, several resources were erroneous or flagged as predatory. Libraries need to improve their OA initiatives by increasing both the quality and quantity of the links they share in their library management system (LMS) and content management systems (CMS). Librarians must also improve their knowledge about OA, predatory publishing, and indexing services to ensure the quality of OA resources being disseminated on their websites. The support of their institution of the resources needed by their library is also important for these initiatives to be implemented.”

April 12, 2026In observance of Earth Month, Benguet State University hosted a wellness forum on April 8, 2026, at the DSG Hall of the College of Teacher Education Building. The event was organized by the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), the College of Social Sciences (CSS), the International Relations Office (IRO), and the Gender and Development Office (GAD), in collaboration with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU).

The forum was attended by university staff, faculty members from various colleges, international visitors, and students.

The first topic focused on a research study presented by Ma’am Karryl Mae C. Ngina, a faculty member of the CSS-Department of Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology (DPAS) and one of the researchers. She discussed the environmental injustices faced by agricultural workers, particularly farmers who are exposed to chemical toxicities in agricultural landscapes due to pesticides and other substances used in farming. She also noted that improper handling and lack of personal protective equipment contribute to the development of various health conditions among farmers. Their study also calls on the agricultural sector of the government to strengthen support and give justice for local farmers and promote their health, safety, and well-being.

The second topic featured a study on the ‘Lapat’ practice in Apayao, which was presented by Ma’am Melody Angco, from the CSS-Department of Political Science, Economics and Development Studies, and one of the researchers. “Lapat” is an indigenous practice of the Isnag tribe of Apayao and some part of Abra, wherein a portion of a land, river, or forest is declared as a “no-trespassing zone” following the death of a family member. The area will remain untouched until the restrictions are lifted. Over time, it has also served as a form of resource management in the Cordilleras.

The third topic, which focused on the study of indigenous healing as a primary healing option, was presented by Ma’am Christine Grace S. Lazaro, a faculty member of the Department of Development Communication under the College of Information Sciences, also one of the researchers. She discussed indigenous healing as a communicative phenomenon, highlighting how these practices are passed through oral traditions, observations, and demonstrations. She also noted challenges in sustaining these practices, including the declining number of elders who practice these methods and the lack of proper documentation, with knowledge largely imparted verbally. Efforts to preserve and document these healing practices are essential in ensuring the continuity for future generations.

Meanwhile, the final topic focused on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), presented by Dr. Paul Weidian Chen, from Zion International Organization, along with Ms. Esther Chen, Mr. Jimmy Cheung, and Mr. Riki A. Gudelano. Dr. Chen, who practices herbal medicine, also emphasizes the integration of spiritual healing in his approach. As he treats his patients, he also introduces them to faith-based healing principles. He highlighted the belief that, “To heal the body, you must first heal the heart.”

The four topics emphasized a holistic approach to well-being. These interconnected perspectives highlight that sustainable peace can be achieved through the preservation of communities and indigenous knowledge, as well as the promotion of inclusive wellness practices.// R. On April 9 – 10, a two-day Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) medical session was also conducted at the International Dormitory lobby. The activity was led by Paul Weidian Chen and his team. The session featured common TCM treatments, including pulse diagnosis, acupuncture, cupping, and herbal recommendations, providing participants not only with the opportunity to experience holistic and preventive healthcare practices rooted in traditional medicine, but also to receive health support and guidance tailored to their individual needs.

April 8, 2026Benguet State University (BSU), through the College of Social Sciences (CSS), in collaboration with the International Relations Office (IRO), formally concludes its three-day Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) photo exhibit with a closing program held at the IRO function hall on April 8, 2026.

The event, which also featured an online seminar entitled “Good Health and Well-being through a Greener Campus,” was attended by CSS faculty members, students from various colleges, and guests and partners from the Department of Education (DepEd), as well as CSS Master of Arts in Social Studies Students’ Association (MASSSA).

The program commenced with an opening prayer, followed by the singing of the national anthem through an audio virtual presentation. IRO Director, Dr. Rex John Bawang, warmly welcomed the participants in his opening remarks, encouraging the students to pursue studies abroad for broader opportunities.

The introduction of the guest speaker was delivered by Mr. Jon Nicole Gutierrez, an Instructor from the CSS Department of Psychology, Anthropology, and Sociology (DPAS). This was followed by a virtual presentation from Mr. Santiago Muriel, a professor at the Universidad de Huelva in Spain. In his talk, he provided an overview of his university, highlighting its green campus initiatives and commitment to societal progress through environmental responsibility and innovative educational approaches. He also discussed the role of Aula de la Sostenibilidad in promoting environmental awareness and advancing strategic sustainability efforts.

A student representative, Ms. Jeanmice Abrera from the College of Home Economics and Technology (CHET), delivered a short message encouraging her fellow students to initiate change within themselves as a contribution to achieving the SDGs. Certificates of appreciation were then awarded to the panel of judges from DepEd and MASSSA, with Dr. Maria Theresa Dolipas, CSS Associate Dean, and Dr. Rachele Bambico, Chairperson of the Department of Political Science, Economics, and Development Studies, leading the award.

This was followed by the recognition of the photo exhibit winners. First place was awarded to Joebe Anongos, Erich Buena, and Jasper Guinsiman from the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE). Second was shared by Claire Kaligtan, Precious Goldyrich Liis, and Jacob Lawrence Reyes, from the Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL); Gigi Allibang, Adrian Clifford Calisog, and Rainiel Paragas, from the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE); and Bernadeth Sanidad from the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (BSND). Third place was awarded to Marc Dylan Amongo, Clara Ysabell Ancheta, Jessica Ancheta, and Leslie Dupagan, from the Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Bio), along with Waren Floyd Laguiwey from the Bachelor of Science in Food Technology (BSFT). Alexis Syrenn Cachero from BSCE placed fourth, while Marleo Alsi from BSABE secured fifth place.

April 7, 2026The fourth part of the “Your Global Launchpad” info session was successfully conducted at Benguet State University, Bokod and Buguias Campuses by PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services on April 6-7, 2026. The event aimed to guide students on global education and career opportunities.

On the first day, held at the BSU Bokod Campus, the morning session was attended by students from the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Public Administration and Governance, and Entrepreneurship. The program opened with remarks from Mr. Gleemoore C. Makie (Campus Administrator), who also introduced the partner organizations. This was followed by Ms. Joy Elisabeth P. Sudango (PTCP ECCS Manager), who provided an overview of PTCP’s services, highlighting internship, education, job, and immersion programs, along with general requirements. The session also featured Mr. Jason E. Angayen (Business Development Officer), who discussed the importance of global competitiveness, emphasizing the advantage of graduates in the international field and the need for continuous upskilling and alignment of skills with global demands.

In the afternoon session, attended by students from Teacher Education and Entrepreneurship, Ms. Delia W. Leon formally facilitated the introduction of partner institutions. This was followed by presentations from Ms. Precious Joy Garcia, who gave a brief introduction to PTCP, and Ms. Emielyn S. Balagtas, who discussed study abroad opportunities. Mr. Angayen once again delivered insights on achieving competitiveness in the US and EU context, reinforcing the importance of skill development for global opportunities.

The same info session was also conducted at the BSU Buguias Campus with the assistance of Ms. Leila P. Buloguey, IRO Coordinator. The info session was attended by agriculture, criminology, and teacher education students. Following the same discussion as in the BSU Bokod campus, the session ended with a student consultation with the PTCP.

The information session aims to provide valuable guidance and inspiration to students, empowering them to explore global pathways for academic and career growth while strengthening BSU’s commitment to internationalization.

This information session strengthened students’ awareness of global pathways and supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly #SDG4QualityEducation #SDG8decentworkandeconomicgrowth, and #SDG17partnershipsforthegoals, by promoting access to international education, skills development, and global collaboration.

April 6, 2026Benguet State University, through the College of Social Sciences (CSS), launched a three-day photo exhibit at the International Relations Office (IRO) Function Hall on April 6, 2026, featuring students’ perspectives on the University’s contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The launch was attended by Dr. Stanley F. Anongos, Dean of the College of Social Sciences; Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office; CSS faculty members; and IRO staff, along with student interns.

The photo exhibit showcases a collection of photographs taken by students from different classes, highlighting the University’s efforts toward achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Dr. Anongos described photography as “a vital tool in reporting and packaging accomplishments,” emphasizing its role not only in documentation but also in storytelling. He also noted that photography has the power to open a viewer’s creativity, allowing individuals to understand and give their own interpretation of images through their own perspectives and experiences. Moreover, he highlighted how photography serves as a bridge between the mind and the heart, conveying various meanings, emotions, and impacts in ways that words sometimes cannot.

The exhibit was formally opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was led by Dr. Anongos and Dr. Bawang. It will run until Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

March 31, 2026In celebration of Women’s Month, Benguet State University, through the Institute of Social Research and Development (ISRD), in collaboration with the College of Social Sciences (Departments of Psychology, Anthropology, and Sociology), the International Relations Office, and the Gender and Development Office, successfully conducted the “Traditional Chinese Medicine Learning and Healing Sessions” from March 4–7, 2026.

The four-day initiative highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and culturally grounded approaches to health and wellbeing, bringing together local communities and global practitioners in a shared space of learning and healing. A total of 132 patients availed of the services throughout the activity.

The engagement formally opened with a courtesy call to Hon. Roderick Chiok Awingan and President Kenneth Laruan, affirming institutional and local government support for cross-cultural health initiatives.

At the core of the program was a specialized clinic held at the International Dormitory lobby, led by Paul Weidian Chen, a fourth-generation Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor, together with his team from Zion International Organization—Esther Chen, Jimmy Cheung, and Riki A. Gudelano. Through pulse diagnosis, acupuncture, cupping, and herbal recommendations, the team provided holistic and personalized care, emphasizing the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and social well-being.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Chen shared:“As a Chinese medicine practitioner, I am very honored to participate in the ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine Learning and Healing Session’ organized by BSU during Women’s Month… In just 20 or 30 minutes, many participants felt obvious relaxation and relief… The essence of TCM is not only relieving symptoms, but helping individuals regain inner balance and vitality. Without these cross-cultural efforts, the warmth of TCM would not reach communities like Benguet. I look forward to more cooperation in the future.”

Beyond clinical services, the program also fostered intercultural learning and environmental awareness. During session breaks, Esther Chen led informal nature walks, introducing participants to medicinal plants found within the campus and demonstrating how everyday flora can support health and healing. Participants included BSU employees and their families, students, local elders, and community members from surrounding areas—reflecting the program’s inclusive and community-centered approach.

The initiative further underscored the value of people-to-people connections in internationalization efforts, where knowledge exchange goes beyond classrooms and into lived, embodied experiences of care and wellness.

March 28, 2026Benguet State University (BSU), through its International Relations Office (IRO), hosted a meeting and seminar with Maharasarakham University (MSU) of Thailand on March 28, 2026, held at the IRO function hall in the morning and at the Everlasting Hall of the Research and Extension Building in the afternoon.

The meeting featured Dr. Orawan Srisompun, Head of International Affairs under the Division of Agriculture of Maharasarakham University, accompanied by Ms. Tissanamadee Srisompun. They were joined by Dr. Doreen Allasiw, IRO Deputy Director; Dr. Jhordan Cuilan, International Language Center (ILC) Director; Dr. Pelin Belino, College of Home Economics and Technology (CHET) Advanced Studies (ADS) Coordinator; Ma’am Jacqueline Gawisan, CHET IRO Coordinator; Sir Jake Galian, CA IRO Coordinator. Also in attendance were Ma’am Dafhney Joy Ligligan and Ma’am Judylyn Obal, who will be undertaking their internships at the Faculty of Public Health and the Faculty of Technology at MSU, respectively.

During the meeting, Dr. Srisompun introduced Mahasarakham University’s institutional profile and its academic programs. In turn, Dr. Allasiw and Dr. Cuilan introduced Benguet State University’s profile, including the programs offered by the ILC. Both parties agreed on the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

In the afternoon, a seminar hosted by the Office of Extension Services entitled “Farmer Organizations and Market Integration: The Case of Rice and Vegetable Supply Chains in Thailand” took place online and onsite at the Research and Extension Office’s everlasting hall, with the participation of graduate and undergraduate students, educators, researchers, and members of farmers’ groups.

Dr. Srisompun discussed her field of expertise in agriculture, providing valuable insights into rural agricultural practices, challenges in both conventional and modern supply chains, key constraints faced by individual farmers, the various types of farmer organizations in Thailand, and the benefits of market integration mechanisms. She also highlighted case studies of rice production in Thailand, including ‘Punboon Organic,’ a community-based organic rice enterprise that promotes sustainable agriculture and value-added rice products, and ‘Ba Nong Hin,’ a village-level rice farming community, which illustrates grassroots agricultural development. These initiatives emerged from the efforts of the national government to encourage smallholder farmers to shift from conventional farming to organic farming practices and promote sustainable agriculture.

Moreover, she also introduced the ‘Khao Im Solution,’ an end-to-end, community-based approach that is applied in rice farming. This emphasizes food security, sustainable production, and value chain development. This model is often illustrated by case studies like the Punboon Organic and Ban Nong Hin, which demonstrate the integration of sustainability and market-oriented strategies in rice production.

Following the discussion, an open forum was held, allowing the participants to seek clarifications on the topics presented and engage in further discourses about the point raised.

During her visit, Dr. Srisompun toured the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC), guided by Mr. Lovenel Cagadoc, Beekeeping Volunteer, and Mr. Tristan Apiles, Farm Technician, where she was introduced to the various beekeeping and farming management techniques, honeybee by-products, and the different pollen alternatives. She also visited the Strawberry Farms, facilitated by Mr. Leonard D. March 26, 2026Benguet State University, through the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center, hosted a two-day knowledge sharing, seminar, and partnership meeting on March 25–26, 2026.

The event focused on Knowledge-Sharing on Agribased Technology Business Incubation, Strawberry cum High-Value Vegetable Production, Seminar on Local Branding Strategy in Japan, and a collaboration meeting. Held at the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center (ATBI/IC), the event brought together students, farmers, educators, researchers, international visitors, and institutional representatives for a series of knowledge-sharing sessions, field exposure activities, and strategic discussions.

On the first day, the knowledge sharing activity started with a welcome remark from Dr. Richard Dumapis, RAISE Project Staff, and Dr. Ruth Diego, ATBI/IC Director, who provided an overview of the farming incubation program, discussing the history, success, and challenges faced by ATBI/IC. Meanwhile, Dr. Darwin Basquial, project staff at ATBI/IC, and Mr. Fredie Ayawan, founder of FMA Agritech Integrated Farm, delved into the Practical Aspect of Strawberry Cum High Value Crops Production. In the afternoon, Mr. Fredie Ayawan, Mr. Baltazar Tuyadan Jr., and Ma’am Jocelyn Baniaga, incubatees of ATBI/IC, accompanied the guests for a visit to the strawberry farm.

The second day of the seminar commenced with an opening prayer led by ATBI/IC intern, Ms. Diane Daplian, followed by the opening remarks from Dr. Roscinto Ian Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension, stating that agriculture is the backbone of our nation. The event featured Dr. Kurita Hideyuki, an Associate Professor at Ehime University under the International Relations Africa Engagement Promotion Office.

Dr. Kurita briefly discussed the Mandarin Orange varieties in Ehime, the Mandarin Calendar, and the logistics of Mandarin Orange before delving deeper into the Branding Strategy in Food Value Chain and Role of Local Government in Rural Japan, Ehime. During his discussion, he expounded on the different strategies of mandarin orange farmers, the cultivation practices, the branding of mandarin oranges and other products made out of mandarin oranges, and the multiple market channels used by farmers. He also underscored the critical role of the local government which helps enhance and improve the farmers’ strategies in product distribution, and helps promote local development that benefits the public. Additionally, collaborations with private companies expand the market sales activity through initiatives and negotiations. He then highlights that branding quality, with the use of mascots or images, powers the impact of how consumers perceive the product.

The morning session concluded with an open forum followed by the awarding of certificates to Dr. Kurita Hideyuki and Dr. Darwin Basquial, together with Dr. Ruth Diego, ATBI/IC Director; Dr. Lesley Dale Umayat, Food Science Research Innovation Center (FSRIC) Director; Dr. Ana Mendoza, Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) Director; and Ma’am Matyline Camfili-Talastas, Research and Extension IRO Coordinator.

The afternoon session features the partnership collaboration meeting, attended by directors, representatives, and project staff from different offices. March 23, 2026Delegates from Tottori University paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the President on March 23, 2026, as part of their field study exploration in Benguet’s farming communities, accompanied by Ma’am Matyline Talastas, Research and Extension IRO Coordinator, and Ma’am Cheryll Launio, Director of the Office of Extension Services.

Benguet State University President, Dr. Kenneth Laruan, and International Relations Office Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, extended a warm welcome to the visiting delegation of Tottori University, including a professor, alongside undergraduate Agricultural Economics students and a BSU alumna, Ms. Mary-an Altaki, who is currently pursuing her graduate studies in Agricultural Economics at Tottori University.

Following their courtesy visit, the delegation toured around the campus, including select agricultural centers and institutes. During their tour, the delegation visited the University Marketing Center, where BSU products are available. They also explored the University Library, where Ms. Pretty Garuela, one of the Library Aides, guided them, and the University Museum, where C. Unos and R. Wayan, BSIT interns, shared a brief history of the University.

At the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), they were guided by Mr. Cirilo Del Rosario, Science Research Assistant, who introduced the different stages of Arabica coffee processing and demonstrated the various machineries, tools, and equipment used. The visit concluded with a courtesy call at the office of the IHFSA Director, Mr. Christopher Deponio, where the delegation engaged in a meaningful discussion on the current state of the coffee industry.

The delegation then proceeded to the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center (ATBI/IC), where Project Technical Assistant V Mr. Leonard Licudan led a tour of the facility, highlighting food processing methods, packaging techniques, and equipment. This was followed by a visit to the Food Science Research and Innovation Center (FSRIC), where Mr. Caster Troy Iblogan facilitated the tour and discussed food product development, extension services, and processing technologies. During the visit, the delegation also met the FSRIC Director, Mr. Lesley Dale Umayat.

March 23, 2026Benguet State University (BSU), through the Cordillera Center for Animal Research and Development (CCARD) and the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC), formalized its partnership with Catalyste+ Canada through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the Office of the President on March 23, 2026.

Catalyste+ is a Canadian economic development organization that provides mentorship and advisory services to strengthen local skills and organizational capacity across countries and Indigenous communities in Canada. It collaborates with governments, community organizations, and businesses to enhance knowledge and drive innovative solutions for sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and operates spanning over 30 countries.

The ceremonial signing was held in the presence of University President Kenneth A. Laruan; CCARD and CRAC Director Ana B. Mendoza; Research and Extension Vice President Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres; International Relations Office Director Rex John G. Bawang; Academic Affairs Vice President Janet P. March 20, 2026As part of the Guam delegates’ visit to the municipality, Benguet State University, in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of La Trinidad, hosted a cultural exchange program on March 20, 2026, at the University Canteen, College of Home Economics and Technology Building.

The program was graced by Benguet State University officials, including the University President and Vice Presidents, as well as representatives from the Local Government Unit of La Trinidad, representatives and officials from Guam, BSU faculty and staff, student interns, and the Kontad Cultural Group.

The exchange was carried out through a series of interactive activities, including delegate introductions, messages of support, and cultural performances. The BSU-KONTAD showcased traditional Cordilleran dances such as Pinanyowan, Ballangbang, and Boogie from Mountain Province, Tinaktakyad, Tayao, and Bendiyan from the province of Benguet. Meanwhile, the Guam delegation presented the ‘Tuleti’, which includes chants, dances, and rituals that honor ancestral traditions and highlight the deep connection of the Chamorro people to the sea. These presentations fostered mutual appreciation and a deeper understanding of each culture. The program concluded with expressions of gratitude and the exchange of cultural tokens, symbolizing unity and shared heritage.

The Guam delegation presented ‘katupat,’ a handcrafted item made from coconut leaves, representing the latte stone, which is found in their island and the foundation of ancient times, while both parties expressed their commitment to sustaining long-term partnerships through future exchanges, research collaborations, and cultural engagements.

The event is part of BSU’s ongoing commitment to internationalization and partnership-building, aiming to strengthen cultural understanding and academic collaboration. March 16, 2026From the University of Queensland, Dr. Anthony Halog, a visiting scientist and professor, shared his expertise on Circular Economy and provided mentorship on project proposals to faculty members and staff of Benguet State University at the Everlasting Hall of the Research and Extension Building on March 13, 2026.

Dr. Anthony Halog, a distinguished expert in sustainability science, industrial ecology, and circular economy, has contributed to the Philippines through the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Balik Scientist Program. He also collaborated with Caraga State University to strengthen research on responsible production and consumption, particularly in reducing environmental impacts. In recognition of his contribution to the country’s mining strategies in 2025, he was commended as a Balik Scientist.

To start the day, Dr. Halog was warmly welcomed by the University President, Dr. Kenneth Laruan, Dr. Janet Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Engr. Marvin Valentin, Special Assistant to the OVPAA. During the meeting, they discussed the current status of agriculture and engineering programs at BSU.

As an Environmental Science professor, Dr. Halog shared his knowledge on circular economy, which replaces the traditional linear economy by changing how products are designed, utilized, and disposed of– from the “take→use→throw away” model to keeping materials in use for as long as possible (reduce, reuse, recycle approach) during the Public Lecture and Proposal Workshop oganized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, and the Office of Research Services.

He also discussed bioeconomy, which refers to the use of renewable biological resources to produce products, and he also highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps improve highland farming in a seminar. He encourages engineers to design out waste and pollution, maintain materials and products in use, and regenerate natural systems. Additionally, he provided guidance on selecting appropriate funding agencies for participants who plan to propose research studies and seek financial support.

Meanwhile, eight research study titles were proposed during the workshop session in the afternoon, with Dr. Halog, Dr. Janet Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Sir Roscinto Ian Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension, who served as panel members.

The seminar-workshop concluded with insights and mentorship from Dr. Halog and the sharing of takeaways by the participants. Moreover, Dr. Halog, with the assistance of Engr. March 14, 2026Strengthening ties in physical education, Benguet State University (BSU), through the College of Human Kinetics (CHK), formalized a partnership with YMCA College of Physical Education in India, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Office of the University President on March 14, 2026.

Kenneth Laruan, University President, along with Sir Marlon Tabdi, Dean of the College of Human Kinetics (CHK), and faculty members from CHK, warmly welcomed Sir Johnson Premkumar, Principal-in-Charge and staff representative of YMCA College of Physical Education. Further exchanges of information were made through presentations and discussions.

Dr. Laruan and the faculty members of the College of Human Kinetics at BSU discussed the programs offered by the college, as well as the potential plans for future collaborations. Meanwhile, Sir Premkumar introduced YMCA College of Physical Education, providing a background of the institution, which was established in 1920 by Harry Crowe Buck, a renowned pioneer in physical education training in India. He also presented the college’s infrastructure, facilities, and equipment, along with other information about its faculty and staff, and the number of students currently enrolled in the institution.

The discussion concluded with plans to propose exchange programs between the two institutions. The guests were accompanied by International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang, along with other IRO staff members, as they paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the University President, where they were received by Dr. Josel M. Florentin, Vice President for Business Affairs, and Dr. Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres, Vice President for Research and Extension. The meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen institutional connections and explore potential areas of cooperation between BSU and TİKA.

Following the courtesy visit, the group proceeded to the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where Mr. Vecker Tero, IHFSA Farm Supervisor, together with Ms. Loida A. March 7, 2026Sharing of experiences and insights emphasizing the value of cross-cultural perspectives marked the final leg of the Tottori University delegates’ Immersion Program with Benguet State University (BSU).

The delegates reflected on how their perspectives on the province and the country had evolved, comparing their initial impressions with the discoveries they made during the immersion program. The closing activity commenced with a heartfelt message from the IRO Director, Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, congratulating the delegates for completing their immersion. Alongside the ILC Director, Dr. Jhordan T. Cuilan, Dr. Bawang awarded the certificates recognizing the students’ achievements and the invaluable role of Tottori University staff members, Sir Kaoru Hayata and Ma’am Shanika Ito, in assisting in the conduct of the program.

Sir Hayata and Ma’am Ito also delivered messages of appreciation, noting how the immersion program allowed their students to blossom, showing visible transformations in their individual growth and a profound sense of confidence. Dr. Cuilan concluded with words of gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the Socio-cultural Immersion Program, which is now in its second year as an ILC Flagship Training Initiative.

On March 7, the delegates explored the Baguio Botanical Garden for their final excursion. Known for its lush greenery and tranquil environment, the site features Friendship Gardens representing countries with cultural ties and sister-city relations with Baguio City, including Japan.

March 5, 2026Delegates from Tottori University explored select sites in Baguio City as part of the socio-cultural immersion program of the BSU- International Language Center (ILC). This aims to provide foreign students with opportunities for academic learning while strengthening their cultural understanding and appreciation of nature and the local community.

Starting the day’s visits, the delegates enjoyed an exciting adventure tour at Uncle Sam’s Eco Park. This allowed them to appreciate the natural beauty and local artistry of the park which features colorful stone carvings, rock designs, wooden bridges, and nature trails, among others. The group also visited the BenCab Museum where the students explored an impressive collection of contemporary and traditional Filipino art, from wonderful paintings to sculptures. While enjoying the fresh mountain air and scenic views, the visit allowed for appreciation of both nature and Filipino artistry.

In the afternoon, the delegates continued their exploration with a visit to the historic Diplomat Hotel and nearby Mirador Hill, blending culture, heritage, and scenic landscapes. The former Diplomat Hotel, now known as Baguio City Heritage Hill and Nature Park, stands as a silent witness to decades of history . The tour concluded with a reflection on the Mirador Hill Peace Memorial which was established to honor the victims of war and inspire reconciliation and lasting commitment to peace. The delegates also experienced the torii gates and bamboo grove, which created a familiar “Little Japan” atmosphere in the Philippines.

March 4, 2026As one of the highlights of the socio-cultural immersion, Tottori University delegates visited a well-known major wholesale bread manufacturer and a renowned Philippine handweaving company.

Guided by Ma’am Laarni Bacit, Quality Assurance Manager, the delegates first toured the Valley Bread production facility. The visit allowed the group to observe the end-to-end bread-making process, from flour baking sourcing to final packaging. Students gained insights into modern baking methods, leaving a better appreciation for the craftsmanship behind everyday staples like bread. Interestingly, the tour provided unique learning opportunities, blending technical education with cultural immersion. Valley Bread’s facility truly offers a glimpse into efficient production, inspiring future innovations in the industry.

In the afternoon, the delegates explored Narda’s Handwoven Arts Inc., and Ma’am Lorraine Gumeyac, weaving-in-charge, led the tour and showed the hand weaving production of Cordilleran textile step by step. The visit highlighted traditional techniques, blending indigenous heritage patterns. Students also had the chance to observe skilled weavers at work, where they create table runners and cloths with cultural patterns, seeing each step of crafting vibrant textiles.

This activity fosters a deeper appreciation for the company’s legacy, mirroring a creative way of preserving woven products known for being of high-quality, locally sourced, and eco-friendly.

March 3, 2026Tottori University delegates partake in an interactive learning with the BSU-KONTAD aimed at experiencing select traditional dances in the region. The session concluded with a performance showcasing what they had learned while dressed in the traditional Cordilleran attire.

In the afternoon, the delegates engaged in an eco-educational tour at the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center (CRAC) and the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where they learned of the efforts of the university in research, livelihood, and income generation toward environmental sustainability.

Mr. Tristan Apiles, CRAC farm technician, conducted an orientation about the center and the beekeeping processes and procedures. Following this, the delegates had enrichment discussions with Mr. Hemar Batil, science research assistant, and Mr. Hanter Paul Bangitao and Mr. Lovenel Cagadoc, CRAC volunteers. On the other hand, Mr. Vecker Tero, IHFSA farm supervisor, toured the delegates around the vicinity after a short introduction of IHFSA and its purpose. He shared the different drying methods, drying process, the roasting methods of the coffee beans, and the budding process of the citrus trees.

March 3, 2026Benguet State University (BSU) welcomed students from Odisee University College on March 2, 2026, during the flag-raising ceremony at the Administrative Building grounds, followed by a Cultural Welcome at the International Relations Office (IRO) function hall in the afternoon.

Dr. Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office (IRO), warmly welcomed and acknowledged the presence of the international visitors during the flag ceremony. He was joined by International Language Center Director Jhordan T. Cuilan, who introduced the delegates from Tottori University, and College of Nursing Dean Mark U. Gay-as, who presented the nursing students from Odisee University College.

After the ceremony, the Odisee students paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the University President, where they were welcomed by Dr. Richard H. Kinnud, the Vice President for Administration and Finance and Officer-in-Charge; Sir Mark U. Gay-as, the Dean of the College of Nursing and IRO Coordinator; Sir Jude L. Tayaben, Associate Dean of the College of Nursing; and Ma’am Bernadette C. Bagto, from the Office of the University Registrar. The delegates were also briefed on the activities and programs they may participate in during their stay. Afterwhich, they also raised their national flag alongside the Philippine Flag, symbolizing their presence in the University and strengthening the spirit of friendship and international collaboration.

Afterwards, the students toured the College of Nursing (CN) building, facilitated by Ma’am Mhyrlynejee S. Camdas and Ma’am Jovy L. Layson, faculty and staff members at the CN, where they were introduced to the various rooms, laboratories, and equipment available for use during their internship in BSU.

A cultural welcome program was held for the students in the afternoon. The program was once again graced by Dr. Kinnud and Dr. Bawang, along with faculty members from the College of Nursing. The program commenced with an opening prayer led by Ms. Stefanie Gum-oyen, IRO intern, followed by welcome remarks by Dr. Doreen Allasiw, the Deputy Director of IRO. Sir Dominador Abad Jr., Department Chairperson of the Clinical Instruction, together with Sir Mark Gay-as, presented an overview of the partnership between BSU and Odisee University and introduced the delegates. Dr. Kinnud then conveyed a heartfelt message about the partnership, which was followed by a gracious expression of gratitude from Ms. Dulcie Anne Marie Shekewa Domene Sinonke, one of the Odisee University students.

Moreover, a demonstration of cultural artistry was performed by the BSU Wildcats Arnis Team, showcasing the rhythmic stick-and-blade techniques of the National Martial Arts of the Philippines, the Arnis. This was followed by the performance of the BSU Lowland Cultural Dance Troupe, Sinagtala, performing the Sarung Banggi and Cariñosa. The cultural showcase was concluded with a line dance led by Ma’am Charvet Caytap.

March 2, 2026Benguet National High School (BeNHS) buzzed with cross-cultural excitement as Tottori University delegates shared a glimpse of their culture, traditions, and language through interactive presentations and discussions with foreign language learners and faculty.

The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Principal Nestor O. Dalay-on, who greeted the Japanese delegates and set an enthusiastic tone for the activity. Splitting into two groups, the delegates introduced key aspects of Japanese culture among Grades 7 and 9 learners through lively discussions and student-led presentations. These were decorated with curious questions about food, seasons, landmarks, and customs, among others, making the classroom fun and engaging. With the delegates are Ma’am Grace O. Pelico, Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL) Coordinator; Ma’am Jelyn Cortez, SPFL Teacher; and Ms. Arisa Minami, Nihongo Partner.

The afternoon sessions among Grades 8 and 10 learners highlight simple demonstrations and songs. The sessions concluded with up-close and personal interactions between the delegates and the foreign language learners, deepening cross-cultural connections.

Earlier this morning, the delegates attended the University’s Flag Raising Ceremony, gaining insights into one of the institution’s regular traditions and expressions of unity. Following the program, the delegates proudly raised their national flag alongside the Philippine Flag, symbolizing their presence in the University and strengthening the spirit of friendship and international collaboration.
