BSU VP for Academic Affairs Speaks at International Workshop on Smart Low Carbon Agrifood Systems in Taiwan

Dr. Janet Paday-os Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs of Benguet State University (BSU), represented the University as a distinguished speaker at the 2026 Smart Low Carbon Agrifood Systems International Workshop, held on September 9–11, 2026, at the Chang Yung Fa Foundation International Convention Center, Taipei, Taiwan.

Organized by the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC) in collaboration with the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), Taiwan Livestock Research Institute (TLRI), and Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TCDARES), the workshop convened experts, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region. The discussions centered on the theme “Smart Low Carbon Agrifood Systems: Digital Innovation in Crops, Livestock, and Pathways to Net Zero.”

Dr. Pablo delivered a presentation entitled “AGRINNOVATE: Optimizing Efficiency of the Vegetable Value Chain for Nutrient Return and Circular Economy.” Her talk highlighted BSU’s initiatives in advancing sustainable agriculture through innovation and circular economy practices.

Over the three day program, participants engaged in sessions on sustainable soil management, water efficient crop production, livestock technologies, and smart electrification for agriculture. Key highlights included presentations on IoT-based soil moisture management, blockchain-enabled carbon credits for livestock, and Philippine innovations in low-carbon rice farming.

The workshop also featured roundtable discussions on bridging data gaps and adapting policies for sustainable agrifood systems. Closing remarks emphasized the importance of collaborative pathways toward achieving net zero agriculture in the Asia Pacific region.

Benguet State University takes pride in Dr. Pablo’s contribution to this international dialogue, underscoring the University’s commitment to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable development in agriculture.

September 20, 2026The socio-cultural and language immersion of the Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Japan delegates continued with a two-day classroom immersion at Benguet State University, where they interacted with college students taking Purposive Communication, Translation, and Foreign Language subjects.

As part of the activity, the delegates shared aspects of Japanese culture and traditions, giving BSU students an opportunity to learn more about Japan through direct interaction with the delegates. They also introduced basic Japanese vocabulary and grammar, which the students could use as an introduction to the Japanese language and its everyday expressions.

Through the classroom activities, the Kyutech delegates and BSU students shared knowledge and experiences while strengthening their understanding of each other’s language and culture.

September 18, 2026Kyutech delegates took part in a team-building activity with student leaders from the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), fostering camaraderie, cultural exchange, and meaningful connections among the participants. Beyond the fun and excitement, the activities encouraged teamwork, communication, and cooperation.

Following the interactive activities, the participants shared their insights and reflections, highlighting the lessons and experiences gained.

The activity served as an avenue for the Kyutech delegates and BSU students to build connections, learn from one another, and strengthen intercultural exchange between Japan and the Philippines.

September 17, 2026Kyutech delegates immersed themselves in the rich heritage and artistic traditions of Benguet and Baguio City through a day of cultural and educational visits.

The group visited Narda’s Weaving Shop at the Winaca Eco-Cultural Village in Acop, Tublay, Benguet, where they gained firsthand experience of the weaving process and learned about the craftsmanship, skills, and traditions behind the production of handwoven textiles.

The cultural immersion continued at Narda’s Handwoven Arts & Crafts in Baguio City, where the delegates explored a wide range of finished woven products that showcase the artistry of local weavers. The same also purchased several handcrafted items as souvenirs and expressions of support for the local weaving industry.

To conclude the day, the Kyutech delegates explored the BenCab Museum, where they discovered diverse works of art and deepened their appreciation of Philippine culture, history, and creativity as reflected in the museum’s collections and exhibits.

The activities provided the delegates with meaningful insights into the Cordillera’s cultural identity while fostering greater intercultural understanding and appreciation between the Philippines and Japan.

September 16, 2026The third day of the socio-cultural and language immersion of the students from Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan continued with activities that allowed them to interact with members of the Benguet State University community. The delegates explored the campus and interviewed learners, teachers, and staff, giving them a closer look at everyday life at BSU.

They also visited the College of Teacher Education- Secondary Laboratory School to observe and interact with Grade 10 and Grade 12 learners, where they engaged in meaningful practical discourse sessions. Through these interactions, the Japanese delegates and BSU learners had the opportunity to get to know each other and share a glimpse of their school life and culture.

The day concluded with a reflection session where the delegates shared the results of their interviews, what they learned from the day’s activities, and their personal realizations and reflections.

September 16, 2026As part of Benguet State University’s 110th Foundation Anniversary, the International Relations Office joined faculty members and staff from different colleges, offices, and units in a campus-wide tree-planting, tree-rearing, and weeding activity on September 16, 2026.

Joining the BSU community in the activity, JICA Volunteer Kikuchi Otoha joined in caring for and greening the university campus. Together with BSU employees, she took part in the activity, contributing to the university’s continuing efforts toward environmental stewardship and sustainability.

The activity, organized by the College of Forestry, Department of Environmental Science, Center for Geoinformatics, and International Relations Office, brought the BSU community together in caring for both newly planted and existing trees across the campus.

This activity highlights BSU’s continued efforts to care for the environment and keep the campus green.

September 15, 2026The socio-cultural and language immersion of the 16 delegates from Kyushu Institute of Technology (KyuTech), Japan continued with a day focused on exploring BSU’s research, agricultural, and industry-related initiatives.

The delegates visited the Research and Extension Building, where they explored the Agro-Trade Fair featuring research products, innovations, and technologies during the RAISE Summit 2026. They also visited the university’s strawberry farm and souvenir area as part of their campus experience.

In the afternoon, the delegates visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, where they had an enrichment discussion with Farm Technician (Apiarist) Mr. Hanter Paul M. Bangitao, Science Research Assistant Mr. Hemar T. Batil, University Research Associates Mr. Tristan B. Apiles and Ms. Schereid Joi N. Ugnasi, and College of Veterinary Medicine Interns. The group toured the farm and center and learned about the different processes and practices involved in beekeeping.

The delegates then proceeded to the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA), where they met with Mr. Junee Mark D. Gayaso and Mr. Jaymar Ross P. Garcia, Farm Worker and Administrative Aide of IHFSA, respectively. They learned about the different coffee species grown by the university and in the region, as well as the coffee harvesting, production, and post-harvest processes practiced by the institute.

The day gave the delegates an opportunity to see how BSU’s research and agricultural initiatives support local industries and communities while gaining firsthand knowledge of the university’s work in these areas.

September 15, 2026Benguet State University (BSU) participated in Teach Forward Manila 2026, held on September 14, 2026, at the Makati Shangri-La, Manila, bringing together higher education leaders, academic managers, faculty members, and technology practitioners to explore emerging developments shaping Philippine higher education.

With the theme “Building the Philippine Higher Education Institution that Students, Employers, and the Future Actually Need,” the forum focused on the changing landscape of higher education amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and assessment, the development of a national micro-credential framework, and the need to scale effective teaching practices across higher education institutions.

The event provided opportunities for participants to engage in practical discussions on how institutions can respond to these emerging shifts. Discussions examined the implications of integrating AI into pedagogy, developing credentials that provide meaningful value to graduates and employers, and strengthening institutional approaches to teaching and learning.

Emphasizing real conversations grounded in practice, Teach Forward Manila 2026 served as a venue for participants to exchange experiences, explore current challenges, and learn from institutions and practitioners working to address the evolving needs of Philippine higher education.

September 14, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed 16 delegates from the Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan, on September 14, 2026, as they began their two-week Socio-Cultural and Language Immersion Program under the International Language Center (ILC), in collaboration with the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) and the International Relations Office (IRO).

On their first day, the delegates were presented to the administrative officials and university employees before proceeding to a courtesy visit at the Office of the University President, where President Kenneth A. Laruan formally welcomed them.

This was followed by a campus tour that included visits along the Marketing Center, University Library, and University Museum, among others. The afternoon activities highlighted a courtesy visit to Provincial Governor Melchor Diclas and a guided tour of the Benguet Museum with discussions led by Tourism Officer Kenneth Kelcho. Said tour and discussion emphasized about the culture, traditions, and heritage of the Province.

September 13, 2026Benguet State University joined the SDG Forum 2026: Making Higher Education Institutions More Relevant and Impactful for a Sustainable Future, held virtually via Zoom on September 10–11, 2026.

The nationwide forum was hosted by Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) as part of a CHED-funded project conducted in partnership with 14 Philippine Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs), including BSU. The project aims to map and monitor the different Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiatives being carried out by higher education institutions across the country.

The forum also provided an opportunity for participating universities to learn from one another and share practices that can help improve their contributions to sustainable development. It focused on helping PHEIs assess their performance based on the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, share successful practices in research, instruction, and extension, and encourage discussions on policies and partnerships that can support sustainability efforts.

Representing BSU, International Relations Office Director Dr. Rex John G. Bawang shared the university’s practices and initiatives related to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

BSU’s efforts in these areas were also reflected in its performance in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2026, where the university placed 201–300 in SDG 3 and 401–600 in SDG 10 among participating universities worldwide.

Through its participation in the forum, BSU continues to share its experiences and learn from other higher education institutions in strengthening its SDG initiatives and making its contributions to sustainable development more meaningful and impactful.

PISTA 2026, an international conference held on September 3, 2026, online via zoom, initiated by the Department of Filipino of the College of Arts and Humanities in collaboration with the BSU International Relations Office and BSU Alumni Association Incorporated, brought together educators, researchers, and language enthusiasts from different places to explore this year’s theme: “AI as a Tool in Language Research, Pedagogy and Learning of Languages.”

From discussions on AI literacy and human agency to the role of Filipino and other languages in the digital age, the sessions gave us so much to reflect on and bring into our classrooms and research.

August 19, 2026Benguet State University hosted a lecture series featuring Prof. Pablo Antonio Cano Jiménez of the University of Huelva, Spain, on August 18, 2026, bringing international perspectives and expertise closer to the University’s students and academic community.

The morning session, held for students and staff of the College of Human Kinetics, centered on research, academic writing, and the effective presentation and interpretation of research findings. With the theme “Beyond the Numbers: Presenting Results and Writing Insightful Discussions,” the session provided participants with valuable insights on going beyond the presentation of numerical data and developing meaningful discussions from research results.

The seminar opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Marlon S. Tabdi, Dean of the College of Human Kinetics, followed by the rationale presented by Kaycee P. Bugtong of CHK Research. Rex John G. Bawang, Director of the International Relations Office (IRO), introduced Prof. Cano Jimenez before the seminar proper. The morning session also included an open forum, allowing participants to engage with the speaker and deepen their understanding of the topics discussed.

In the afternoon, Prof. Cano Jimenez continued the lecture series online via Zoom for students and staff of the College of Public Administration and Governance. The session focused on the timely and evolving role of artificial intelligence in the public sector, carrying the title “AI in Governance: From Technological Innovation to Public Value, Trust, and Responsible Government.”

The lecture explored how AI can move beyond technological innovation to contribute to public value while emphasizing the importance of trust, accountability, ethics, and responsible government. The session provided participants with an opportunity to examine the implications of AI adoption in governance and its potential to support more responsive and effective public administration.

Through the two sessions, Prof. Cano Jimenez shared international perspectives that complemented BSU’s commitment to strengthening research capacity, academic engagement, and internationalization. The lecture series also highlighted the value of knowledge exchange between BSU and international academic partners in equipping students and personnel with relevant perspectives and competencies for an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world.

On August 19, Prof. Cano Jimenez also visited the BSU Open University, where he met with faculty and staff. He also met with Open University Director Samuel S. Poliden to discuss possible areas of collaboration and partnership, including the potential delivery of a Spanish language program through the Open University, as well as other initiatives that may strengthen academic cooperation between the two institutions.

August 18, 2026Benguet State University once again welcomed Professor Pablo Antonio Cano Jiménez from the University of Huelva, Spain, for an Erasmus+ Staff Training Mobility at the University on August 17, 2026.

Professor Pablo’s visit began at the College of Teacher Education (CTE) Secondary Laboratory School, where he was toured around by Ms. Imee Cuadra and Ms. Judith Sacley. IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang accompanied Professor Pablo throughout the tour, which also provided an opportunity for a brief exchange on international mobility experiences and discussions on possible areas of collaboration and activities with the Secondary Laboratory School.

The visit continued at the College of Teacher Education, where Professor Pablo met with CTE Dean Divina M. Yango and CTE IRO Coordinator Dolores Alawas. He also observed one of the classes and engaged with students in a discussion on language and culture. Following the class, he met with the Dean and IRO Coordinator to discuss possible areas of collaboration and activities for the college.

In the afternoon, Professor Pablo was invited to serve as a panelist during a session with Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL) students from the College of Arts and Humanities, who are currently taking Foreign Language and Translation Studies. The students presented their research on Spanish language and culture, giving them the opportunity to share their work and receive insights from a native Spanish speaker and educator. Professor Pablo shared his perspectives and experiences, helping the students gain a deeper understanding of the language and culture they were studying.

The day concluded with a cultural welcome hosted by Benguet State University. The gathering was attended by faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Teacher Education, including faculty members who were once Professor Pablo’s students in Spanish language.

During the program, CTE IRO Coordinator Dolores Alawas formally opened and welcomed Professor Pablo and shared that this marks his fourth visit to Benguet State University, reflecting the continuing connection between the University and the University of Huelva.

Adding to the warm welcome, the BSU KONTAD showcased the University’s rich cultural heritage through a series of traditional dances. The BSU RONDALLA, conducted by Ms. Alma Vida G. Gallardo, also provided a series of musical performances that enriched the evening.

The cultural welcome concluded with a community dance participated in by the faculty, staff, students, and guests, bringing everyone together in celebration of friendship, culture, and international exchange.

Professor Pablo’s visit further strengthens the continuing partnership between Benguet State University and the University of Huelva, creating opportunities for academic exchange and collaboration in education, language, culture, research, and international mobility.

August 16, 2026Delegates from Halu Oleo University, Indonesia, visited Benguet State University on August 14, 2026, as part of their engagement with the Schools Division of Benguet. The visit included a courtesy call and discussions on possible partnerships, academic collaboration, knowledge sharing, and other activities that may benefit both institutions.

The delegation was composed of Prof. Dr. Arifuddin Mas’ud, S.E., M.Si., Ak; Prof. Sarani Yusuf; Prof. Dr. Sudirman Zaid, S.E., M.Si.; Dr. Sri Wiyati Mahrani, S.E., M.Si.; Dr. Halifatullah, S.H., M.H. Alwi, S.Sos.; and Far Faisal.

During the courtesy visit at the Office of the University President, the delegation was welcomed by BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan, IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang, and Marviz Kiong, a student from the College of Teacher Education who is set to participate in a student mobility program at Halu Oleo University.

Also present during the courtesy visit were representatives from the Department of Education–Cordillera Administrative Region (DepEd-CAR), including Aladin M. Dobinto, Chief Education Supervisor; Melchor C. Tican, Public Schools District Supervisor; and Delarosa Delmas, Public Schools District Supervisor.

Following the courtesy visit, the delegation toured the BSU campus and visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, one of the University’s research centers. They learned about BSU’s beekeeping programs and other related initiatives. The delegates also visited the College of Forestry and observed one of its classes.

The visit continued with a meeting at the IRO Hall with representatives from the College of Agriculture, College of Forestry, College of Teacher Education, and the International Relations Office. The meeting provided an opportunity for both universities to learn more about each other’s programs and identify possible areas of collaboration.

Among the areas discussed were student and faculty mobility, joint research, research publication, and research presentations. The meeting ended on a positive note, with both institutions expressing interest in developing a formal partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement.

August 15, 2026Benguet State University and PTCP Explore Career Consultancy Services (PTCP ECCS) formalized their commitment to strengthening international education and career opportunities through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on August 14, 2026, at the Office of the President, BSU Administration Building.

The partnership seeks to provide opportunities for the exchange of professors, researchers, and staff, as well as cultural exchanges, traineeships, study visits, and immersion activities for undergraduate and graduate students. It will also pave the way for collaborative initiatives in marketing, program promotion, and information sessions that support international education and career development.

The MOU was signed by BSU President Kenneth A. Laruan and PTCP ECCS CEO/Manager Ms. Elisabeth Joy P. Sudango, with IRO Director Rex John G. Bawang and PTCP ECCS Assistant Manager Irene Victore serving as witnesses.

Through this partnership, BSU and PTCP ECCS reaffirm their shared commitment to expanding global opportunities and empowering students, faculty, and staff through meaningful international experiences. //R. Day-ong

August 13, 2026Benguet State University hosted a cultural welcome program for a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) volunteer and a student from the Tokyo University of Agriculture who will be engaging with the University’s Pomology Project.

The program opened with remarks from International Relations Office Director Rex John G. Bawang, who welcomed the visitors, faculty, staff, and students from the College of Agriculture. He also gave a brief introduction to the culture that the participants would be watching and experiencing during the program.

Mr. Jamesly T. Andres, Project Leader of the Pomology Project, introduced the visitors and discussed their respective engagements with the project. Ms. Kikuchi Otoha is a JICA volunteer who will be serving under the Pomology Project for two years, while Mr. Akira Tsutsui, a student from the Tokyo University of Agriculture, will observe the research activities being conducted under the project and undertake his one-month on-the-job training.

Mr. Marvin T. Valentin, Special Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, also delivered an inspirational message. He encouraged students to gain another perspective by learning about the education systems and experiences of other countries. He also encouraged them to take advantage of international opportunities similar to the engagement of the visitors.

Mr. Constantino T. Sudaypan also shared a message and briefly recounted how Ms. Otoha came to be a JICA volunteer at BSU. He shared that the engagement with JICA started through a proposal submitted in 2022. The proposal was resubmitted over the succeeding years until 2025, when a volunteer was identified for the project. In 2026, Ms. Otoha began her engagement with the Pomology Project and, at the time of the program, had already been with the project for five months.

He also welcomed Mr. Tsutsui and expressed his gratitude to both visitors for their future contributions to the project and the University. He hoped that their engagement at BSU would also become meaningful to them, so that when they return to Japan, they would continue to remember the University and their experiences here.

The program proceeded with presentations from Ms. Otoha and Mr. Tsutsui. Mr. Tsutsui introduced the Tokyo University of Agriculture and shared insights into Japanese culture and agriculture. Ms. Otoha then presented various aspects of Japanese culture, including Japanese shrines and temples, onsens, and school festivals. She also shared practices related to sustainable agriculture and the management of unsellable fruits and vegetables.

To synthesize the program, Mr. Jake L. Galian, College of Agriculture IRO Coordinator, shared that the gathering served not only as a way to welcome the visitors but also as an opportunity to consider them friends and part of the University community. He expressed hope that the visitors would have a good experience, create meaningful memories, and gain fruitful learning during their stay at BSU. He also thanked the organizers, participants, and visitors for making the activity possible.

The cultural welcome reflects BSU’s continuing commitment to internationalization by creating opportunities for students, faculty, and international partners to learn from one another and build meaningful connections through agriculture, culture, and shared experiences.

August 5, 2026As part of the ongoing academic engagement with the delegation from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Benguet State University hosted a plenary session with the delegation at the International Relations Office Function Hall on August 4, 2026.

Attended by BSU faculty members and staff, the activity served as a platform for knowledge sharing, research collaboration, and the continued advancement of internationalization initiatives between the two institutions.

The program commenced with an opening prayer led by Ms. Shiela Marie Donquiz of the College of Engineering, followed by the introduction of the WUST delegates by Mr. Marvin T. Valentin, Special Assistant to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The BSU participants were then introduced by Ms. Fabie Dummapi of the College of Engineering, while Mr. Naycer Jeremy G. Tulas of the College of Information Sciences presented an overview of the activities prepared for the delegation’s visit.

A message of welcome was delivered by Dr. Constantino T. Sudaypan Sr., Dean of the College of Agriculture, emphasizing the value of international partnerships in advancing academic excellence, research, and innovation. Meanwhile, Ms. Lorielaine A. Baldemor of the College of Engineering shared the University’s expectations for the collaborative engagement.

The highlight of the event was the plenary session featuring distinguished experts from WUST. Dr. Eng. Paweł Sokołowski, Deputy Head of the Department of Metal Forming, Welding and Metrology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, introduced Wrocław University of Science and Technology, its Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and the Department of Metal Forming and Metrology. He also delivered a lecture on “Plasma Spraying: From Process Fundamentals to Functional Coatings and Applications,” highlighting additive manufacturing and surface engineering processes. In addition, he discussed scholarship opportunities available to BSU faculty members and students who aspire to pursue academic and research endeavors in Europe.

The session continued with Adam Sajbura, PhD Candidate at WUST, who presented “Ultrasonic Atomization for Metal Powder Production and General Applications of Ultrasound in Engineering,” showcasing innovative approaches and emerging technologies in materials engineering.

Completing the series of presentations, Michał Tympalski, PhD Candidate at WUST, introduced the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics and shared his presentation on “Monitoring Glacier Dynamics with SAR Data,” demonstrating the use of advanced geospatial technologies in environmental monitoring and climate research.

The plenary session served as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, academic dialogue, and the exploration of future collaborative initiatives between Benguet State University and Wrocław University of Science and Technology, further strengthening the University’s commitment to internationalization and global academic partnerships.

August 4, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed delegates from Wrocław University of Science and Technology on August 3, 2026, for a weeklong academic engagement under the NAWA PROM Programme of Poland.

The delegation was led by Dr. Eng. Paweł Sokołowski, accompanied by PhD candidates Adam Sajbura and Michał Tympalski, together with Eng. Marvin T. Valentin. The delegates participated in the University’s Flag Raising Ceremony before proceeding to a courtesy visit with University President Kenneth A. Laruan. They were welcomed by President Laruan, Vice President for Academic Affairs Janet P. Pablo, International Relations Office Director Rex John G. Bawang, College of Engineering Dean Alvin C. Dulay, and Department Head of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Erickson N. Dominguez.

During the courtesy visit, representatives from both institutions introduced their respective universities and discussed the activities lined up throughout the delegates’ stay. The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore potential areas for future collaboration in research, academic exchange, and other international initiatives.

Following the courtesy visit, the delegates, together with CIS faculty member Naycer Jeremy G. Tulas and College of Engineering faculty members Erickson N. Dominguez, Fabie Dumapi, and Sheila Marie Donguiz, toured several of the University’s research facilities. They first visited the Research and Extension Building, where they met with Vice President for Research and Extension Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres to discuss possible collaborations in research, academic initiatives, and scholarly publications.

The tour continued at the BSU Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center (ATBI/IC), the Food Science Research and Innovation Center (FSRIC), and the Northern Philippines Rootcrops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC), where the delegates learned about the University’s food processing technologies, business incubation initiatives, and root crop research and production programs.

In the afternoon, the International Relations Office hosted a cultural welcome program at the IRO Function Hall. The delegates were treated to performances by the KONTAD Cultural Dance Troupe and the BSU Rondalla, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Cordillera and the Philippines.

Throughout the week, the delegates will participate in a series of academic engagements, including public lectures, research proposal development workshops, and collaborative discussions with BSU faculty members and students. Their visit is made possible through the NAWA PROM Programme of Poland, which supports short-term international academic mobility and fosters collaboration among higher education institutions.

The engagement also reflects BSU’s continuing commitment to strengthening international partnerships, advancing research and innovation, and promoting global academic engagement.

July 27, 2026In celebration of National Language Month 2026, the Department of Filipino of the College of Arts and Humanities, Benguet State University, in partnership with the BSU Alumni Office, International Relations Office, and University of Huelva, will hold the PISTA 2026: Pagdiriwang ng Inobasyon sa Saliksik, Turo, at Aral ng mga Wika – International Symposium on Innovations in Research, Pedagogy and Learning of Languages 2026 on September 3, 2026.

With the theme “AI as a Tool in Language Research, Pedagogy and Learning of Languages,” the symposium aims to provide an international platform for the exchange of knowledge, research, and best practices in the fields of the Filipino language, indigenous languages, foreign languages, literature, culture, and emerging technologies.

It also seeks to strengthen international collaboration, expand academic partnerships, and promote the development of research with significant societal impact through the participation of researchers, educators, students, and experts from the Philippines and other countries.

July 22, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed representatives from Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN), Indonesia, on July 22, 2026. The delegation was composed of Dr. Abdul Kadir, M.Pd., Head of LP2M IAIN and Lead Researcher, and Muh. Kurniawan, M.Pd., Head of Global Partnership. They were joined by representatives from the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Office of Benguet: Aladin M. Dobinto, Chief Education Program Supervisor of the Curriculum Implementation Division; Delarosa V. Delmas, Public Schools District Supervisor of La Trinidad District; and Lorna M. Yaco, Education Program Specialist II.

The delegation paid a courtesy visit to the BSU-Office of the President, where they were welcomed by University President Kenneth A. Laruan, Vice President for Academic Affairs Janet P. Pablo, and International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang.

Following the courtesy visit, the delegation met with deans and representatives from the College of Social Sciences and the College of Teacher Education to learn more about the University’s academic programs and discuss possible areas for collaboration. The discussion focused on opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, research collaboration, and other academic partnerships.

As part of their visit, they also toured the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center, where they learned about BSU’s beekeeping programs and practices.

The visit marked an important step toward building a meaningful partnership between BSU and IAIN Indonesia. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both institutions expressing their interest in pursuing a formal agreement to strengthen future collaboration in education, research, and academic exchange.

July 17, 2026BSU joins the 1st Workshop on University’s Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) Implementation in the Philippines. Benguet State University participated in the Luzon Cluster of the 1st Workshop on University’s IQA Implementation in the Philippines Utilizing the AUN-QA IQA Management Toolkit Version 1.3, held on July 14–16, 2026 at Marikina Polytechnic College.

The workshop is part of a nationwide capacity-building series designed to strengthen the Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) systems of higher education institutions in the Philippines. It was jointly organized by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development (SEAMEO RIHED), the ASEAN Quality Assurance Network (AQAN), and the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP).

Centered on the AUN-QA IQA Management Toolkit Version 1.3, the workshop equipped participants with practical strategies for strengthening institutional governance, promoting evidence-based decision-making, and building quality assurance systems that respond to digitalization, internationalization, and the evolving needs of higher education and the workforce.

Throughout the three-day program, participants explored the Philippine higher education landscape, gained a deeper understanding of the eight building blocks of the AUN-QA IQA Management Toolkit, and engaged in working sessions, peer learning, and action planning to develop customized Internal Quality Assurance plans for their respective institutions. The workshop also featured learning sessions led by quality assurance experts from the ASEAN University Network Secretariat, SEAMEO RIHED, the University of Santo Tomas, Mahidol University, and the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, along with a special address from Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Dr. Shirley Castañeda Agrupis.

Representing BSU were Dr. Janet P. Pablo, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Imelda G. Parcasio, Dean of the Graduate School and Special Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Joanna I. Alafag, Director of the Office of Quality Assurance and Accreditation; Dr. Evelyn D. Rosario and Jacelle Grace M. Maidun from the Office of Quality Assurance and Accreditation; Racquel M. Fatog and Jeric Raye Bayating from the International Relations Office; and Janice P. Balangen, faculty member and International Relations Office Coordinator of the College of Natural Sciences.

BSU’s participation in the workshop reflects the University’s continuing commitment to strengthening its culture of quality and aligning its academic and institutional practices with ASEAN and international quality assurance standards in support of academic excellence and continuous improvement.

July 10, 2026Benguet State University warmly welcomed the Ambassador of Israel to the Philippines, Dana Kursh, together with Ms. Gladys Baniqued-Turiano, Programs and Public Diplomacy Officer of the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines, on July 9, 2026.

The delegation was received by University President Kenneth A. Laruan, International Relations Office (IRO) Director Rex John G. Bawang, IRO Deputy Director Doreen I. Allasiw, and Ms. Karryl Mae C. Ngina of the College of Social Sciences, a former MASHAV scholar.

The visit reaffirmed the continuing relationship between Benguet State University and the Embassy of Israel while providing an opportunity to discuss possible areas for future collaboration. It also marked Ambassador Dana Kursh’s first visit to the University and followed previous visits by Israeli ambassadors in 2022 and 2019, reflecting the sustained engagement between the Embassy and BSU over the years.

A notable outcome of the 2022 visit of then-Israeli Ambassador H.E. Ilan Fluss was the participation of three BSU alumni in the Agro Studies Internship Program in Israel. The alumni completed an 11-month agricultural internship, an opportunity that grew from the discussions during Ambassador Fluss’s visit to the University.

Following a courtesy call with the University President, the delegation was treated to a cultural welcome featuring performances by the BSU KONTAD. They were then given a tour of the campus, including the College of Agriculture, where they learned about the University’s agricultural programs and initiatives. The delegation also visited the Cordillera Regional Apiculture Center to gain insights into the University’s beekeeping program before exploring the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center (BAPTC), showcasing BSU’s commitment to agricultural development and the vegetable trading industry.

June 30, 2026Representatives of Cordillera Youth Center (CYC) and YOUCA (Youth for Change and Action) met with the Benguet State University – International Relations Office to discuss international youth exchange programs and fellowship opportunities for selected BSU students on June 23, 2026, at the IRO Building. The program promotes cultural immersion, advocacy engagement, and educational exchange in Belgium.

CYC is a Baguio-based SEC-registered youth development organization focused on capacity building, education, cultural revitalization, environmental awareness, and youth empowerment in the Cordillera region. Looking forward, this initiative also envisions a potential partnership with Benguet State University, through the International Relations Office, to further strengthen multilingual collaboration, youth exchange, and international engagement programs in the future.

The fellowship program involves a three-week stay in Belgium. In the first week, participants will undergo introduction and orientation activities, including host family integration. In the second week, they will participate in the YOUCA Action Day (work immersion with Belgian youth) and engage in school visits. In the third week, students will present discussions on Cordillera issues, particularly environmental and indigenous peoples’ concerns. Through these activities, participants will be able to share local perspectives, gain international learning experiences, and strengthen global awareness aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Experienced Filipino professionals can now apply for a free, 10-month study and professional program in the United States. The deadline to apply is August 7, 2026. Interested leaders must submit their applications through the online portal at apply.iie.org/huberthhumphrey.

As a component of the renowned Fulbright exchange activity, the program is primarily funded by the U.S. Congress through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. The non-renewable fellowship completely covers:

Round-trip international travel to assigned U.S. host universities and Washington, D.C.
