Professor Satoshi Kubota from Kochi University, Japan visited BSU to introduce the Kuroshio Scholarship Program and deliver a lecture on the Internet of Plants (IoP) Project on March 1, 2024. A total of 68 participants attended the event.

The Kuroshio Scholarship program is a program provided by the Kochi University for international PhD students . It aims to recruit outstanding students who will serve as a bridge between Kochi University and their own countries upon completion. Additionally, a master’s scholarship program focusing on agricultural and marine sciences was also highlighted. Both scholarship programs receive funding from the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

During his presentation, Professor Kubota introduced a research initiative known as the Internet of Plants (IoP) Project. This innovative project employs precision agriculture techniques to systematically monitor diverse aspects of plant growth and environmental conditions. It achieves this by tracking real-time data on critical factors like photosynthesis, crop development, yield, and weather conditions. This project aims to establish an “IoP Cloud” platform that provides producers with data spanning from production to distribution, enhancing agricultural efficiency and sustainability.

As part of the visit, an excursion was organized to enhance the professor’s understanding of the university’ research capabilities. Professor Kubota toured the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRTRTC) and explored various laboratories, including the Soil, Plant, and Water Laboratory.
